Planning a winter trip to Europe usually comes with one big worry: how do you stay warm without looking puffy and over-bundled in every photo?
I run cold (like, really cold 🥶), and I’ve spent multiple winters in Europe finding out what keeps me warm and still looks flattering.
The tricky part is that winter in Europe isn’t one temperature. Southern Italy in December was very mild for me, while December trips to Amsterdam and Venice were damp and super chilly.
That’s why I built the Europe winter outfits in this post around temperature, not cities.
You’ll get 10 outfit essentials, how to pick the right version of each one for your forecast, and 30 cozy outfits you can copy for daytime and dinner.
Here’s what you’ll learn today:
✅ The 10 essential categories behind 30 cozy, stylish winter outfits
✅ How to pick each piece based on the temperature where you’re going
✅ Daytime and dinner outfit ideas for chilly, cold and freezing days
😩 If you’re already stressing about bulky coats and boots, answer 2 quick questions here and I’ll send you a custom packing list for your winter trip.

Each of these 10 essentials has a pick for chilly 45 to 60°F (7 to 16°C), cold 32 to 45°F (0 to 7°C) and freezing below 32°F (below 0°C) days, plus 30 outfit ideas showing how to wear them.

✨ The 10 Essentials Behind Your Europe Winter Outfits
If you’re figuring out what to wear in Europe in winter, start with the expected temperature and weather for the time of your visit.
Each of the 10 essential winter categories below has a pick for chilly, cold and freezing days, so you only pack the version your trip needs.
Look for the emoji that matches your daytime highs:
🧣 Chilly: 45 to 60°F (7 to 16°C). Think Lisbon, Rome, Barcelona or Athens.
❄️ Cold: 32 to 45°F (0 to 7°C). Think Amsterdam, Venice, London or Vienna.
🥶 Freezing: below 32°F (below 0°C). Think Scotland, Scandinavia, the Alps, or a cold snap anywhere.
Check the forecast for your trip two weeks before you start building your packing list, then again 2 to 3 days before you pack. Go with the zone that matches.
💡 Winter in much of Europe is damp and windy. If you get cold easily, pack for one zone colder (Amsterdam, London and Paris are good examples).
1️⃣ A Coat (or Two) Chosen by Temperature
Your coat sets the tone for all your winter outfits for Europe, so start here.
Most trips need one coat. Two make sense if you’re combining cities with nature, or if you want a puffer for sightseeing and something dressier for dinner.
🧣 Chilly days: a quilted jacket
The Quince featherless quilted jacket is my go-to once the weather moves to genuinely chilly (mid-November and early March in many popular places). It’s slim and polished, covers my hips and butt, and packs down smaller than you’d think.
❄️ Cold days: a wool coat
The Quince wool cashmere cocoon coat is the coat I brought for December in Northern Italy. I wear it with a cashmere turtleneck and pretty much any pants, so it works for sightseeing and dinner.
It isn’t weatherproof and doesn’t cut the wind, so save it for dry days. For city trips in the 40s°F (4 to 9°C), this polished quilted jacket is a great alternative.
🥶 Freezing days: a down puffer
The Responsible Down Puffer Jacket is thicker and warmer than a packable puffer.
Going somewhere with snow? A long down parka is worth it, and I compare the warmest coats by temperature here.

2️⃣ A Merino Base Layer

This is the piece that makes everything else warmer without adding bulk. Bonus points because merino resists odor, so you can rewear it (just air it out overnight).
I wear the Unbound Merino v-neck long sleeve in white. I chose the v-neck because it looks more stylish on its own.
White works for me because it looks nice under the light colored sweaters I usually pack. A black base layer peeking out from a cream sweater won’t look good, so try it on under all your sweaters before you pack.
🧣 Chilly days: On mild days it works on its own under an open coat.
❄️ 🥶 Cold and freezing days: Wear it under every sweater, every day.
👉 Worried about itch? Here’s what I’ve learned from years of wearing merino.
3️⃣ Cashmere and Wool Sweaters (Chosen by Temperature)
Sweaters are where you can but more of your personal touch on the outfits, so this is the fun part. Cashmere is light and packs small, so you can bring more than you’d think.
🧣 Chilly days: stripes or a cashmere crewneck
A Faherty cotton and cashmere striped sweater is perfect for mild days, and stripes make an open coat and simple pants look put together.
The Mongolian cashmere crewneck goes with almost every bottom on this list. I have mine in pink, and a soft color like that keeps neutral winter outfits from looking flat.
❄️ Cold days: a turtleneck
A lightweight baby alpaca turtleneck keeps your neck warm without a bulky scarf. I have it in cream.
A regular cashmere crewneck or a Quince cashmere turtleneck works for cold days too.
🥶 Freezing days: a merino knit
The Unbound Merino lofty knit sweater is a mid-weight merino crewneck, so it’s warm without being bulky. Wear it over your base layer on the coldest days.
Curious which fiber is warmer (and less itchy)? I break it down in merino wool vs cashmere.

🧳 Packing for Winter in Europe and Not Sure How Much to Bring?
Winter packing is tricky: too few layers and you’re freezing, too many and your suitcase won’t close.
Answer 2 quick questions about your destination and dates, and I’ll send a custom packing list straight to your inbox.
✅ The exact number of tops, bottoms, layers and shoes to bring
✅ Outfit examples for cold days, cozy dinners and travel days
✅ A short “don’t pack” list so you don’t waste space
Answer them here ⬇️
4️⃣ Warm Pants (Chosen by Temperature)
I always start with bottoms when I pack, because they decide how many outfits you get.
🧣 ❄️ Chilly and cold days: Ponte or corduroy
Ponte pants are the travel pants I recommend to everyone. I have cropped and bootcut versions, and both sit nicely over ankle boots.
Corduroy works just as well, and I have a burgundy pair. The Quince stretch corduroy wide leg pants and the Madewell wide leg corduroy are both great.
Denim is also a warm choice, but it holds moisture in blowing rain. If you bring jeans, wear tights underneath and pick a relaxed straight leg so the tights actually fit.
🥶 Freezing days: tights underneath
Wear merino tights under your Ponte or corduroy pants. You’ll feel the difference right away.
Also read: how to layer for cold weather without looking bulky.

5️⃣ A Cashmere Midi Skirt
A skirt makes winter outfits feel dressier with zero extra effort. My Mongolian cashmere midi skirt is ribbed, and it’s my pick for chilly days.
🧣 Chilly days: with tights and boots
In winter I always wear it with tights, a sweater, and sock booties or ankle boots. Some women love tights with black leather sneakers, so if that’s your style, go for it.
If it snows, weatherproof boots are the practical choice (even if they’re not the prettiest with a skirt).
❄️ 🥶 Cold and freezing days: switch to pants
This is when I switch to pants, warm socks and warm boots.
See more Quince skirts that work with tights and boots.
6️⃣ A Cashmere Sweater Dress
A sweater dress is one piece that feels like a full outfit, which is a win on chilly mornings. Mine is a black cashmere dress, and it’s so versatile.
🧣 Chilly days: with tights and boots
I wear it with tights, sock booties or ankle boots, and a belt to give it shape. Tights with leather sneakers work too if that’s your style.
❄️ 🥶 Cold and freezing days: switch to pants
Same as the skirt, this is when I switch to pants, warm socks and warm boots.
Find Quince cashmere dresses that layer over tights.
7️⃣ Merino Tights
Tights are tiny, and they add warmth without adding bulk. The Unbound Merino tights sell out often 😂 so if you see them in stock, grab them.
🧣 Chilly days: under skirts and dresses
They make your skirt and dress work on chilly days.
❄️ 🥶 Cold and freezing days: under pants
I wear merino tights in winter, and on really cold days I wear them under pants too. If you prefer leggings, merino leggings work the same way.
8️⃣ Boots (Chosen by Temperature)
Boots pull your winter outfits together and keep your feet dry. Skip thin heels, because cobblestones and tram tracks make them a no go.
🧣 ❄️ Chilly to cold days: sock booties
My Quince sock booties go with pants, skirts and dresses. They’re comfortable, but they’re not a 10 hour walking shoe.
Spray them with a weatherproofing spray before wet trips so the leather doesn’t get damaged.
❄️ 🥶 Cold and wet days: waterproof boots
Blondo waterproof boots keep your feet dry on slushy streets. Pick a flat or low lug sole for Europe’s cobblestoned streets.
Ariat waterproof Chelsea boots are another favorite with the ladies in my Ways of Style community. Note that Chelsea boots are bulkier than your standard bootie or ankle boot, so make sure that fits your overall style.

9️⃣ A Waterproof Walking Sneaker
Most European cities are best seen on foot, so your second pair should be the comfy one. Never bring new shoes, and break them in at home first so you don’t spend your trip with blisters.
🧣 Dry, mild days: leather sneakers
For places like Sicily, southern Spain or southern Portugal, Quince leather everyday sneakers look great, are easy to style, and you won’t need waterproofing.
🧣 ❄️ 🥶 Rainy or damp days at any temperature: waterproof sneakers
I travel with the Vessi Soho sneakers as my waterproof walking pair, and they’re comfy and warm on cold days. Want more cushion? Try the Vessi Stormburst Low Top.
Both Vessi shoes are a bit chunky and can look bulky on bigger feet (especially with slim legs 😉).
The Sorel Ona Ave is cuter and more affordable, but not as comfy for all day walking.
For the most cushion and a sportier look, try the On Cloud 6 Waterproof Sneakers. The waterproof outer makes it a little stiff, so size up half a size.
💡 On freezing days, pair any of these with merino wool socks. The waterproof membrane already makes them warmer than regular sneakers.

🔟 Warm Accessories
Accessories are the easiest way to add warmth and make the same outfits look different.
🧣 Chilly days: a cashmere wrap
A Mongolian cashmere wrap doubles as a scarf and an extra layer. Mine is burgundy, and it adds color to neutral outfits.
❄️ Cold days: a scarf and beanie
Add a cashmere scarf and a cashmere beanie. I pack a cashmere beanie, and it barely takes up any space.
🥶 Freezing days: gloves and warm socks
I’m not a gloves person at all, but on freezing or windy days you’ll be glad you packed cashmere gloves. Don’t forget merino wool socks, because warm feet make cold days so much easier.
Every day: a crossbody
A crossbody keeps your hands free and your things close.
I use the Gemma crossbody, and the water repellent Revive nylon crossbody is great for rainy cities.

🙋🏻♀️ I don’t pack an umbrella. I check with my Airbnb or hotel ahead of time to see if they have one I can borrow, but it’s really up to you and what you’re comfortable with.
Shop Quince hats, scarves and gloves to keep you warm.

Europe Winter Outfits FAQ
What should I wear in Europe in winter?
The easiest Europe winter outfits start with layers: a merino base layer, a cashmere or wool sweater, warm pants or a skirt with tights, and a coat that matches the temperature. Add waterproof shoes and a scarf or beanie, and you can handle most winter days from chilly to freezing.
Is Europe cold in winter?
It depends on where you go. Southern cities like Lisbon, Rome and Athens usually stay in the 50s°F (10 to 15°C) during the day, while cities like Amsterdam, Vienna and Prague are colder and Northern Europe often drops below freezing. Check the forecast before you pack and dress for that zone.
How many coats should I pack for Europe in winter?
Most trips work with one coat chosen for your coldest days. Two coats make sense if your trip mixes very different weather, like a city followed by the mountains, or if you want a puffer for sightseeing and a dressier coat for dinners.
What shoes are best for Europe in winter?
Pack one pair of boots and one pair of waterproof walking sneakers for most winter trips. Skip thin heels, and don’t rely on flats as your walking shoe, since cobblestones, tram tracks and wet streets make them uncomfortable fast. Always break your shoes in at home first.
Can I wear jeans in Europe in winter?
Yes, but denim holds moisture in damp, windy weather and can feel cold. If you bring jeans, wear tights underneath and save them for drier days.
How do I stay warm without looking bulky?
Thin, warm layers beat one thick sweater. A merino base layer under a cashmere sweater keeps you warm and still fits easily under your coat, and merino tights add warmth under pants without anyone noticing.
What is European winter style?
European winter style is mostly about simple, well fitting layers in neutral colors with one or two pops of color. Think long coats or puffers, knit sweaters, tailored pants or midi skirts with tights, and practical boots or sneakers.
