Winter trips are where packing light gets hard. 🥶
Whether it’s Christmas markets in Europe, a weekend in New York, or the holidays with family up north… the problem is always the same – bulky coats, heavy boots, and you’re packing a different sweater for every single day of your trip.
That’s because we so often pack pieces that don’t work together.
So I made a 54321 packing method winter list. It’s the same formula I’ve used for spring and fall, reworked for even colder weather.
Here’s what you’ll learn today:
✅ How the 5-4-3-2-1 formula changes for winter (and where your coat fits)
✅ 15 pieces and 24 outfits you can save and copy
✅ How to swap the colors so it works with your skin tone and your closet

The 54321 packing method winter edition is 5 tops, 4 bottoms (3 pants and 1 skirt), 3 layers, 2 pairs of shoes, and 1 warm coat. Every top works with every bottom, so these 15 pieces give you 24 or more outfits for a 7- to 10-day cold-weather trip.

👚 5 tops: Cashmere crewneck | Alpaca turtleneck | Textured sweater | Dressy blouse | Merino base layer
👖 4 bottoms: Ponte pants | Dark jeans | Wool trousers | Knit midi skirt
🧶 3 layers: Cashmere cardigan | Sweater jacket | Cable cardigan
👟 2 shoes: Leather sneakers | Ankle booties
🧣 Accessories: Scarf and beanie | Crossbody | Jewelry | Leather belt
❄️ What Is the 54321 Packing Method Winter Edition?
The 54321 packing method is a simple formula for a travel capsule where everything mixes and matches.
In my fall version, the 1 is a dress. For winter, I swapped it for the piece you’ll wear the most: your coat.
Here’s the winter breakdown:
👚 5 tops (sweaters, a blouse, and a merino V-neck you can wear on its own)
👖 4 bottoms (3 pants and 1 skirt)
🧶 3 layers (2 cardigans and a sweater jacket)
👟 2 pairs of shoes (sneakers and ankle booties)
🧥 1 coat (a long puffer you wear on the plane)
The rule that makes the 54321 packing method winter list work is simple – every top has to work with every bottom (no exceptions).
Accessories and tights don’t count as pieces. A base layer usually doesn’t either, but the merino V-neck here shows, so it takes a top spot.

🎨 Same Pieces, Your Colors
The outfits in this post use light blue, grey, navy, taupe, and a pop of red. You don’t have to copy those colors!
Pick a palette that suits your skin tone and what’s already in your closet. Then build the same 15 pieces in those colors.
Here are 4 easy directions to start from:
✅ Warm and deep: brown pants, a camel cardigan, a cream knit top, an olive sweater, and a burgundy scarf.
✅ Cool and deep: black pants, a charcoal cardigan, a white knit top, an emerald sweater, and a deep red scarf.
✅ Cool and soft: navy pants, a grey cardigan, an ivory knit top, a blue sweater, and a dusty pink scarf (this post is closest to this one).
✅ Warm and light: tan pants, a cream cardigan, a peach knit top, a coral sweater, and a teal scarf.
Not sure which one is you? Look at the colors you already wear the most, and build your 54321 packing method winter list around those. 💛

Let’s Start With The Tops! (5 Total)
Tops show up in every photo, so this is where your 54321 packing method winter list gets its personality.
I mixed necklines and textures, so the same 5 tops still look like different outfits.
The colors are just what’s shown in the outfits. Swap them for whatever fits your palette.

- Cashmere crewneck

- Yak wool diamond-stitch crew
- Chiffon blouse
- Merino V-neck base layer
1️⃣ Cashmere Crewneck:
A cashmere crewneck is the easiest sweater in this capsule. It goes with all 4 bottoms and all 3 layers.
Cashmere is warm for how thin it is, so it fits under a coat without making you feel stuffed (and I tend to run cold).
⭐️ Tip: Tuck just the front into the skirt or your jeans. It shows your waist and makes the outfit look more put together. Not into showing your waist? Leave it untucked and add a cardigan instead. 😊
🏆 Personal recs: I own most of Quince’s cashmere sweaters, so this one’s easy for me to recommend.
Not into blue? Here are more Quince cashmere colors to match your palette.
2️⃣ Alpaca Turtleneck:
A baby alpaca turtleneck is your warmest top. It’s soft and light, and the turtleneck keeps the wind off your neck.
I have this one in cream. Pick a color that goes with all 4 of your bottoms.
⭐️ Tip: Skip the cardigans with this one, since they bunch up around a turtleneck. Wear it on its own or with the sweater jacket.
🏆 Personal recs: Heading somewhere with very warm museums and restaurants? A cotton turtleneck is the cooler option.
3️⃣ Textured Sweater:
This is the fun one. 😍 A yak wool crew with a diamond stitch adds texture, and it’s a good spot for your color pop, since the rest of the list is mostly neutral.
The slightly cropped hem sits right at the waist of wide-leg pants, so you don’t have to tuck it.
⭐️ Tip: If you go bright here, make sure it works with all 4 bottoms, and keep your scarf and jewelry simple.
4️⃣ Dressy Blouse:
One blouse makes your dinners feel different. 🍷 This chiffon blouse has a ruffled collar and cuffs, so it looks dressed up the second you put it on.
It’s light, so it barely takes any space in your bag.
⭐️ Tip: Chiffon isn’t warm on its own, so this is your indoor top. Wear it under the sweater jacket or cashmere cardigan, with your coat on top.
For dinner, tuck it into the skirt with a belt. For daytime, wear it loose with jeans.
5️⃣ Merino Base Layer:
This one’s a base layer, but it shows here, so it counts as a top.
I have the Unbound Merino V-neck base layer, and merino is what I’d pick for this spot. It’s thin, warm, and it doesn’t hold on to smells the way cotton does.
⭐️ Tip: Match it to your sweaters. A black base layer shows through light knits, so try them on together at home first (grey works under almost everything).
🏆 Personal recs: Overheat indoors? Swap it for a short-sleeve merino tee, or trade a sweater for a short-sleeve cashmere tee.
With these 5 tops, you’ve got sweaters for cold days, a blouse for dinners, and a base layer for the days you need one more layer.

Now Let’s Talk Bottoms! (4 Total)
In a 54321 packing method winter list, your bottoms matter most. They have to work with all 5 tops, and the pants have to work with both pairs of shoes.
My tip? Keep your bottoms neutral.
Dark bottoms also hide re-wears, so nobody notices you’ve worn the same pants three times. 😉
Links:
1️⃣ Ponte Pants:
These are my most-worn travel pants. I have the cropped wide-leg Ponte pants in 5 colors.
They could pass for fancy trousers, but they’re stretchy and so comfy. The fabric is thicker too, so they hold up well in cold weather.
⭐️ Tip: Wear them on the plane. They don’t lose their shape, and they go with every top on this list.
2️⃣ Dark Jeans:
Honestly, I don’t love jeans. 😅 But for a casual winter trip, a dark-wash pair is hard to beat.
Dark wash looks dressier than light denim, and it works with both pairs of shoes.
⭐️ Tip: Denim holds on to moisture in rain and snow. If the forecast looks wet, wear tights underneath.
🏆 Personal recs: Add a leather belt that matches your booties.
3️⃣ Wool Trousers:
Wide-leg wool trousers are the dressier pants on this list. They look polished at dinner and still work with sneakers during the day.
Your other 2 pants are dark, so a lighter neutral here gives you more outfits.
4️⃣ Knit Midi Skirt:
This is the piece that makes the outfits feel different. I have the Quince Mongolian cashmere midi skirt in beige, and it’s so soft.
It’s warm for a skirt, and it goes with every top on this list.
⭐️ Tip: Always wear it with tights and ankle booties (no bare legs in winter!).
Skirts are great on chilly days, but on freezing days I’d stick to pants.
Half-tuck your sweater and add a belt. It keeps the look modern and shows your waist.
💡 Planning Tip: Try every pant with both pairs of shoes before you pack. The skirt is the exception, since it only goes with the booties.

🧳 Packing for a Winter Trip and Not Sure What to Bring?
Answer 2 quick questions about your destination and dates, and I’ll send a custom packing list for your cold-weather trip straight to your inbox. It includes:
✅ The exact number of tops, bottoms, layers, and shoes to bring
✅ Outfit ideas for cold days, dinners out, and travel days
✅ A short “do not pack” list, so you don’t waste space on things you won’t wear
Don’t Forget Your Layers! (3 Total)
Layers turn 20 top and bottom combos into a lot more outfits.
They’re also what you’ll take on and off all day, between cold streets and warm restaurants.
The colors are just what’s shown in the outfits, so pick the ones that go with your tops.
Links:
1️⃣ Cashmere Cardigan:
A cashmere cardigan goes with every top here except the turtleneck. It’s the layer you’ll wear the most.
The pearl buttons make it a little dressier, so it works for dinner too.
⭐️ Tip: Button it up and wear it as a top on milder days. That’s an extra outfit without an extra piece.
2️⃣ Sweater Jacket:
This merino sweater jacket is the most fun layer on the list. The white crochet trim and collar make jeans and a sweater look finished.
It’s cropped, so it looks great with the skirt and the wide-leg pants.
⭐️ Tip: This is the layer to wear with the turtleneck.
3️⃣ Cable Cardigan:
A collared cable cardigan adds texture, so simple outfits look cozy without a bulky sweater.
Wear it with pants, especially jeans or Ponte. Over the midi skirt it can look a little old-fashioned (in my opinion), so I save it for pants days.
⭐️ Tip: A light color here brightens up the darker outfits.
🧳 Pro Packing Tip: Before your trip, make sure your layers fit in your personal item. That way you have somewhere to put them when you take them off.

Shoes: 2 Pairs (Sneakers + Booties)
The 54321 rule gives you 2 pairs of shoes. In winter, that’s one pair for walking and one pair that works with the skirt.
That’s what I’d pack for most winter trips too. 🙌
Links:
1️⃣ Leather Sneakers:
I love the Quince leather everyday sneakers. I have them in white, and they go with all 3 pants.
If white is sold out in your size, the Ecco Soft 7 is another true white leather sneaker. Spray either pair with a water-repellent spray that works on leather before a rainy trip.
❄️ Snow or slush in the forecast? Switch to waterproof sneakers like the Vessi Soho. They’re warmer than regular sneakers, too!
🛍️ See every Quince sneaker color for your walking days
2️⃣ Ankle Booties:
Ankle booties go with everything on this list, including the skirt. Brown or black both work. Pick whichever goes with more of your bottoms.
Before a winter trip, spray them with a water-repellent spray that protects them from rain and slush.
⭐️ Tip: Expecting a lot of rain or snow? Go for a waterproof pair instead, like these Blondo waterproof booties.

Your 1 Coat
The 1 in the 54321 packing method winter list is your coat. You’ll wear it over almost every outfit, so it’s worth getting right.
Mine is the Quince featherless quilted long puffer in burgundy. It’s slim, it covers my hips and butt, and it packs down pretty small.
Tip: Pick a color that goes with all 4 bottoms. It comes in more colors than burgundy, and a darker one hides city grime.
Going somewhere below 30°F (-1°C)? Swap it for the Quince responsible down long puffer. It’s super warm, water repellent and wind resistant.
Prefer wool? Here are Quince wool coats that look polished for dinners out.

🧣 Accessories (They Don’t Count!)
Accessories aren’t part of the 5-4-3-2-1 count, but they’re what make 24 outfits look different from each other.
Here’s what to bring:
✅ A scarf and a beanie. I went with a tartan scarf that adds pattern without clashing, plus a plain beanie in a solid color so the two don’t compete.
✅ Black leather gloves. I hate wearing gloves (I don’t even own a pair 😅), but they’re good to have on freezing days.
✅ One crossbody bag. I always travel with a crossbody, and a leather one in a neutral color goes with every outfit.
✅ Simple jewelry. Pearl studs, small silver hoops, and a silver chain necklace go with every neckline on this list.
✅ A leather belt. The nutmeg leather belt works with the jeans and the half-tucked skirt looks.
✅ Tights. Pack 2 pairs of sheer black tights for your skirt days.

24 Winter Outfit Ideas With the 54321 Packing Method Winter Edition
Now let’s put it all together. ✨
Below are 24 outfits from the same 15 pieces. Every top gets worn with every bottom at least once.

Here’s how the math works:
- 5 tops x 4 bottoms = 20 outfits
- Swapping your 3 layers turns those 20 into 24 (and a lot more)
- Your coat, shoes, and accessories go with all of them
That’s plenty for a 7- to 10-day trip, and even more if you can do a quick wash halfway through.
Every Piece and Why It Made the Cut
Here’s the full 54321 packing list for winter in one place, with the color each piece is shown in.
- Cashmere Crewneck (light blue). Warm, thin, and easy under a coat.
- Alpaca Turtleneck (taupe). Your warmest top for windy days.
- Yak Wool Crew (red). The color pop that keeps the list from feeling plain.
- Chiffon Blouse (ivory). Your dinner top.
- Merino V-neck Base Layer (grey). A base layer you can wear on its own.
- Ponte Pants (black). Comfy, dressy, and great for the plane.
- Dark-Wash Jeans. Your casual daytime pants.
- Wide-Leg Wool Trousers (grey). The polished pants for dinners and museums.
- Cashmere Midi Skirt (beige). Wear it with tights and booties on chilly days.
- Cashmere Cardigan (grey). The layer you’ll wear the most.
- Merino Sweater Jacket (navy). Cropped, fun, and great with the turtleneck.

- Ankle Booties (brown). For pairing with the skirt and for nicer dinners out.
- Featherless Quilted Long Puffer. Worn on the plane and over almost everything.
💡 Reminder: This list is a starting point, not a shopping list. Use what you already own, and only fill the gaps.
🧳 How To Pack for a Winter Trip With This List
These 15 pieces fit in a carry-on when you wear your coat on the plane. If you’d rather check a bag, that’s totally fine too!
A few things that make it easier:
✅ Check the weather 2 or 3 days before you go. If snow or slush is likely, your shoes need to be waterproof.
✅ Try your base layer on with every sweater. Check that it doesn’t show through light knits or peek out at the neckline.
✅ Plan one quick wash. Washing a couple of tops halfway through makes a 10-day trip a lot easier.
✅ Stick to one palette. When every color goes together, you never have to think about what matches.
❄️ Quick note about this winter list: it’s built for cold city trips with highs around 30 to 45°F (-1 to 7°C). For mountain or snow trips, you’ll want warmer boots and snow gear.
15 pieces, 24 winter outfits, and a lot less stress.
The 54321 packing method winter list works because every piece goes with almost everything else. Pick your colors, use what you already own, and only fill the gaps.
Happy packing, and stay warm out there! ❄️

54321 Packing Method Winter FAQ
Does the 54321 packing method work in winter?
Yes! In winter, the 1 becomes your coat instead of a dress, and the skirt takes one of your bottom spots. Everything else works the same way, so every top still has to go with every bottom.
Where does the coat go in the 54321 method?
Your coat is the 1, and you wear it on the plane. It’s annoying to carry, but it’s cold when you land, and it’s the one piece that never has to fit in your bag.
How many shoes should I pack for a winter trip?
2 pairs: a walking shoe and an ankle bootie that works with your skirt and dressier pants. If snow is in the forecast, make sure at least one pair is waterproof.
What if it snows?
Check the forecast 2 or 3 days before you leave. If snow or slush is likely, wear waterproof sneakers or boots during the day, and stick to pants instead of the skirt. For hiking or mountain days, pack proper winter boots.
How is the 54321 method different from the Sudoku packing method?
The Sudoku packing method for winter uses 9 pieces in a 3×3 grid, which is great for a 4- or 5-day trip. The 54321 method uses 15 pieces, so it works better for a 7- to 10-day trip.
How many days does a 54321 winter list cover?
About 7 to 10 days, and longer if you can do a quick wash. These 15 pieces make 24 outfits or more.
Do accessories and base layers count as pieces?
Accessories and tights don’t count. A base layer usually doesn’t either, but if it shows (like the merino V-neck on this list), count it as one of your tops.
