Best Shoes for Cold Weather Travel: My Top 15 Picks for European Cities and Beyond!

in Travel Style on 05/15/26

Cold feet on a trip will ruin your day faster than just about anything. You can be standing in front of the most beautiful cathedral in Europe, surrounded by Christmas lights and the smell of mulled wine, and if your toes are frozen and your socks are soaking wet, you are not enjoying any of it.

This is exactly why the best shoes for cold weather travel matter so much. Get this one thing right and the rest of the trip falls into place.

I have been a full time carry on traveler since 2021 and shoes are the one thing I never cut corners on, especially when looking for the best shoes for fall and winter travel. In this post I am sharing 15 picks across five categories, plus exactly what to look for and how to test your shoes before you fly.

If needed, buy them at least four weeks before your trip so you actually have time to break them in. (this is super important!)

Here’s what you’ll learn today:

✅ What to look for in the best shoes for cold weather travel

✅ How to test your shoes properly before the trip so you avoid blisters and surprises on day one

✅ My top 15 picks across sneakers, ankle boots, tall boots, loafers, and snow boots

Let’s get into the best shoes for cold weather travel!

The best shoes for cold weather travel are leather sneakers for everyday walking, waterproof ankle boots for unpredictable weather, and one snow or heavy rain boot for serious conditions (if needed). Comfort, traction, and at least some water resistance matter more than anything else. Plan to buy them at least four weeks before your trip so you can break them in and test them properly.

What Makes The Best Shoes For Cold Weather Travel?

There is no such thing as one perfect shoe for every trip. What works for five days in Paris in October is not the same as what you need for a week in Reykjavik in February. But every pair of travel shoes for cold weather travel should have five things in common, no matter the destination.

Smart packing for cold weather travel always starts here.

👉🏼 Some level of water resistance. Fall and winter mean rain. Drizzle in London, full storms in Amsterdam, wet snow in Munich. You do not want soaking wet feet two hours into your first day.

👉🏼 Real traction. Wet cobblestones are no joke. Look for rubber soles with actual tread. Smooth leather soles look beautiful but they are not safe.

👉🏼 Warmth without bulk. A good cold weather travel shoe has insulation or thick enough construction to keep your feet warm without weighing five pounds.

👉🏼 All day comfort. You will walk more than you think. Choose pairs you have actually worn for hours, not pairs that just look cute in photos.

👉🏼 A polished enough look. Europeans dress up. You do not need stilettos but loud athletic shoes do stand out. Look for shoes that read clean and considered. This depends on the city you’re visiting.

How to test your shoes before your trip:

This is the part most people skip and then regret. Testing your shoes means more than wearing them once around the block. It is the difference between coming home talking about the cathedrals and coming home talking about your blisters.

✅ Wear them around the house for at least a week. Hardwood floors, stairs, sitting at your desk. Pressure points show up early.

✅ Take at least one long walk. Three miles minimum, five miles even better. Wear the same socks you plan to pack for the trip.

✅ Test on different surfaces. Sidewalks, stairs, tile, gravel. Heels slip more on smooth indoor floors than on outdoor pavement. You want to know in advance.

✅ Test the waterproofing if it matters. A light walk in real rain or a quick step in a shallow puddle is enough.

✅ Never pack brand new shoes. Blisters in a foreign country are a special kind of misery. Break everything in at home first.

1️⃣ The Best Waterproof Sneakers for Cold Weather Travel

A great pair of waterproof or weather sealed sneakers is the workhorse of any cold weather travel outfit. You will probably wear them more than any other shoe on your trip. If you only buy one new pair from this best shoes for cold weather travel list, make it a pair of leather sneakers.

  • Quince Italian Leather Sneakers. The ones I wear on every single trip. Clean white leather, comfortable out of the box, no break in required (but still make sure 😅), polished enough to walk from a museum straight into a casual restaurant. Spray with leather protectant before you leave and they handle light rain just fine. [read: light rain]
  • Vessi Weekend Sneakers. Full waterproofing in a sneaker. 100% waterproof, lightweight, machine washable. Pack these if you know you will deal with steady rain in places like London, Amsterdam, or anywhere along the Atlantic coast in the fall.
  • Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof Sneakers. The warmest sneaker on this list. Fleece lined, fully waterproof, named the best all around winter sneaker by multiple 2026 review guides. Skip them for mild fall weather since they run warm, but they are unbeatable winter travel shoes for sustained cold cities.

🎯 For even more options, see my full post on the best walking shoes for Europe.

2️⃣ The Best Waterproof Ankle Boots for Cold Weather Travel

Ankle boots consistently rank among the best shoes for cold weather travel for one big reason: versatility.

They look great with jeans during the day, dresses or trousers for dinner, and they take up significantly less space than tall boots.

For cold weather travel outfit options, an ankle boot is hands down the highest performing piece you can choose. These are also some of the most reliable shoes for travel, period.

  • Blondo Villa 2.0 Waterproof Bootie. The most recommended waterproof ankle boot for travel across every fall and winter shoe guide I have read. Sleek silhouette, side zip, low stacked heel, and AquaProtect waterproofing that handles snow and salt. Pick the leather over the suede for shoes for Europe travel in fall and winter. (this is the exact pair I travel with)
  • Blundstone 558 Chelsea Boot. Legendary status in the travel community. Waterproof leather, no zippers, no break in time. Readers describe walking miles in these straight out of the box without a single blister. Pairs with everything from jeans to a cashmere dress with tights.
  • VIVAIA Chelsea Boots. The most travel friendly option in this category, which also come in some fun colors which is rare. These are lightweight, washable, comfortable enough to wear for hours, and they pack flatter than other boots. They slide on easily with elastic side panels, so no zippers and no laces. Browse all VIVAIA Chelsea boots here.

🧳 Want a customized packing list for your trip?

Choosing the right shoes is one piece of the packing for cold weather travel puzzle.

If you want a full customized packing list for any upcoming trip, including outfit ideas and how many pieces to bring, take this quick 2 question quiz.

Answer them here ⬇️

3️⃣ The Best Tall and Mid Calf Boots for Cold Weather Travel

Tall boots are gorgeous for fall and winter travel outfit options. They look elegant with skirts, polished with skinny jeans, and they keep your legs warm in a way no other shoe can.

The catch? They take up real space in a suitcase, which means they are an optional addition to your list of the best shoes for cold weather travel rather than a “must”.

⚠️ A note for carry on travelers: Tall boots are usually a hard no for carry on only, unless you wear them on the plane. If you have a checked bag or one specific outfit you really want them for, they are absolutely worth it. They make great shoes for Europe travel when you have the suitcase space.

  • Blondo Freya Waterproof Knee High Boot. The most travel friendly knee high in this category. Waterproof leather, sleek structured shape, small block heel that keeps you walkable. Pair it with jeans, leggings, or a midi dress for a polished cold weather travel outfit.
  • Sam Edelman Penny Knee High Boot. A clean riding boot shape in soft leather, pulls on easily, works with everything from jeans to a midi dress. Not waterproof, so spray with protectant if you want them handling unexpected weather.
  • VIVAIA’s Tall & Mid Calf Boots. Lightweight, easy to pull on, and they pack flatter than traditional leather boots. Several different styles, heights, and finishes available, so you can pick what fits your trip

4️⃣ The Best Loafers and Flats for Cold Weather Travel

For dinners out, theatre nights, or just feeling a bit dressier on your trip, you might want loafers or flats in the mix. They elevate your winter travel outfit instantly and pack flat in a way no other dress shoe can.

Keep in mind that it’s especially important to break in your loafers with enough time. Even though these suggestions are very comfortable, loafers and flats can be tricky.

  • VIVAIA Michelle Loafers. My pick from VIVAIA’s loafer line. Real arch support, washable, dressier than a sneaker without being too formal. One pair that crosses from museum days into casual dinners. Browse all VIVAIA loafers here.
  • Quince Italian Leather Loafer. The affordable answer to designer fall loafers that cost five times more. Classic shape, real leather, pairs with trousers or jeans and a long coat. Warm tights for cold weather and they work through fall into mild winter. (these are the loafers I travel with this time of the year)
  • VIVAIA Flats. Wear them with opaque tights and a long coat and you have a polished cold weather travel outfit ready for dinner or a theatre night. Several styles to pick from including ballet, pointed toe, and Mary Janes.

5️⃣ The Best Snow and Heavy Rain Boots for Cold Weather Travel

For trips where snow is on the menu or you know you will be dealing with sustained rain, you need a real boot. Not water resistant. Fully waterproof, with serious traction.

These are the heaviest picks on this list and the ones you only pack when the weather really calls for it.

  • Hunter Original Short Rain Boot. The classic. Travel and city staple for decades. Fully waterproof rubber, a shorter cut than the iconic tall version, pairs with jeans, leggings, or trousers. Pack these for trips with sustained rain or flooded sidewalks. (wear them with warm cashmere socks)
  • Sorel Whitney Flurry II. Top pick when snow is a real possibility. Insulated, fully waterproof, built for ice and slush. Pack these for Iceland, Scandinavia, or any trip with accumulated snow on the forecast. (check out my top picks from Sorel here)
  • Barbour Halton Waterproof Chelsea Rain Boot. The British heritage option in this section. Fully waterproof, Chelsea slip-on style with elastic side panels, and a more refined look than rubber rain boots. Pairs with jeans and a trench for a polished rainy day in Paris or London.

Quick Recap: My Top 15 Picks for Fall and Winter Travel

  1. Quince Italian Leather Sneakers. My everyday travel sneaker. Polished leather that works with everything.
  2. Vessi Weekend Sneakers. Fully waterproof sneaker for trips with steady rain.
  3. Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof Sneakers. Fleece lined and waterproof for the coldest cities.
  4. Blondo Villa 2.0 Waterproof Bootie. The most travel friendly waterproof ankle boot. My personal pair.
  5. Blundstone 558 Chelsea Boot. Waterproof leather, no break in time, pulls right on.
  6. VIVAIA Chelsea Boots. Lightweight, washable, and they pack flatter than any leather boot.
  7. Blondo Freya Waterproof Knee High Boot. Waterproof leather knee high with a walkable block heel.
  8. Sam Edelman Penny Knee High Boot. Clean riding boot shape in soft leather.
  9. VIVAIA’s Tall & Mid Calf Boots. Lightweight tall boots that actually pack.
  10. VIVAIA Michelle Loafers. My pick from VIVAIA’s loafer line for museum days into dinners.
  11. Quince Italian Leather Loafer. The loafers I travel with this time of the year.
  12. VIVAIA Flats. Polished flats that pair beautifully with opaque tights.
  13. Hunter Original Short Rain Boot. The classic rubber rain boot for serious rain days.
  14. Sorel Whitney Flurry II. The snow boot for trips with accumulated snow.
  15. Barbour Halton Waterproof Chelsea Rain Boot. British heritage waterproof Chelsea for rainy Paris or London days.

And there you have it. My top picks for the best shoes for fall and winter travel (depending on the temperature of course).

Picking the best shoes for cold weather travel is honestly one of the biggest decisions for your trip. Cold feet, wet socks, blisters from boots you did not break in. Those things will ruin a day in any city, no matter how beautiful the views are. Get the shoes right and you free up so much mental energy for actually enjoying the trip.

Order your pairs early, test them properly at home, and pack just two pairs total. Anything more and you are wasting suitcase space. Anything less and you are stuck if one pair fails. Two pairs for carry on travelers, three if you have checked bag room 😉 That is the sweet spot for winter travel packing every single time.

Aimara

Cold Weather Travel Shoes FAQ

What are the best shoes for cold weather travel in Europe?

For Europe in fall and winter, the right mix is leather sneakers for everyday city walking, a waterproof ankle boot for unpredictable rain and slush, and one snow boot if your destination has serious winter weather. Two or three pairs total is enough for most trips. Look for water resistance, real traction on wet cobblestones, and comfort for long sightseeing days.

Are waterproof shoes really necessary for fall and winter travel?

Yes, especially in European cities where rain is common from October through March. Even one heavy rain day can ruin non waterproof leather, and wet socks will derail your sightseeing plans. Travel shoes for cold weather travel should have at least some water resistance even if you do not expect rain on your specific dates.

How many pairs of shoes should I pack for cold weather travel?

Two pairs if you are traveling carry on only. Three pairs if you have a checked bag. Any more than that and you are wasting space. Wear your bulkiest pair on the plane to save room in your suitcase. Smart packing for cold weather travel means choosing pairs that each cover a different purpose, not packing five backup options.

Are sneakers OK for shoes for Europe travel in winter?

Absolutely, as long as you choose the right kind. Leather sneakers or fleece lined waterproof sneakers like the Sorel Ona Ave work beautifully for European cities. Avoid bulky athletic running shoes which can stand out as a tourist marker. Sleek leather sneakers are some of the easiest shoes for travel because they go with everything.

What winter travel shoes work best for European cities?

The Blondo Villa 2.0 ankle boot is one of the most universally recommended winter travel shoes for European cities. It handles rain, slush, and snowy sidewalks while still looking polished enough for dinner. The Blundstone 558 Chelsea boot is a close second for travelers who prefer no zippers and no break in time. Both pair well with most shoes for Europe travel wardrobe choices.

How do I choose the best shoes for fall and winter travel?

When picking travel shoes for cold weather travel, start with the weather forecast and your itinerary. Mostly cities means waterproof leather ankle boots and a polished sneaker. Mostly outdoor activities means a heavier waterproof boot. Always include one pair that handles rain. Test every pair at home for at least a week before you fly. The best shoes for travel always come down to fit, comfort, and weather readiness over style alone.

Should I bring snow boots if there is a chance of snow?

Only if there is a realistic chance of accumulated snow at your destination, like Iceland, northern Europe in deep winter, or alpine areas. For mild snow or slush in cities like London, Paris, or Rome in winter, a good waterproof ankle boot is enough. Your winter travel outfit can stay polished without bulky snow boots in those cases. They take up too much suitcase space to pack just in case. Smart winter travel packing means matching the boot to the actual forecast.

In the morning we went to the beach to snorkel and in the afternoon we explored Mayan ruins and had drinks and dinner. I needed sun protection and sneakers because they don’t recommend to walk the ruins in sandals (uneven terrain). I was able to change the wet bathing suit at the beach restaurant and didn’! get sunburn! Win win!!

Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by h Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by how beautiful it is, all the different landscapes, the food, and above everything, the people ❤️

Looking back to a few weeks ago when I was really afraid of going on this trip, thinking about all the things that could go wrong, being a little upset with myself in a way for not wanting the traditional life path I always thought was my only choice; get married, buy a house, have kids, save money and travel when you retire. That’s not for me.

I’m very happy I followed my heart 💕 I wrote a letter to myself on the blog: “What’s the best that can happen if the worst happens?” You can check it out by clicking the link in my bio. I hope it inspires you to think about what YOU really want in your heart, make a plan and go after it (but be patient). I promise that if I did it, so can you.

You have everything it takes ❤️

I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂 I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂

Our days in beautiful Kas are almost over. I’m leaving a piece of my heart in this cute little town and we will definitely be back! Now it’s time to hop on a 6 hour bus to Pamukkale and see what that place is all about!

Honestly, the only reason we are going there is because of me. G is not too crazy about it, but I’ve seen it on Instagram so much that I wanted to see for myself what the buzz was all about. So I’ll keep you posted on what it actually is!

If you are interested in knowing more about Kas (and all the amazing places we are visiting) we share a lot more on @waysoftheworld_ 💞
We talk about useful tips, costs, best things we do, where we stay and so much more. I also update those stories daily! So I hope to see you there 🙃

I was brave 💙 This was the most amazing experienc I was brave 💙

This was the most amazing experience. I was SO nervous and anxious before but somehow I managed to push through and tried this very scary thing for the first time. And you know what I learned? That I loved it! I would do it again a million times! It wasn’t scary at all. It was all in my head and it wasn’t real. Also, they had the sweetest dog at the shop named Lucy that really help me not to think about it (swipe to see her 😍)

We didn’t do any crazy tricks like G did and it was a very peaceful flight. It’s up to you how you want to do it.

I can see why Ölüdeniz is one of the top places in the world to go paragliding. If you only want to do it once to cross it off your bucket list, this is the place you go to. We shared a post about with useful information in case you are interested. Link in bio + stories.

Would you do it? 🙃
