New York in December is one of my favorite winter trips. The tree, the store windows, the markets, a Broadway show at night 🎄
We’ve been to New York many times, and in winter it’s COLD. I tend to run cold, so for me it’s all about layers that keep you warm outside and come off easily inside.
So if you’re figuring out what to wear to NYC in December, today I’m sharing 28 NYC winter outfits, grouped by what you’ll actually be doing: travel day, the Rockefeller tree, the markets, museums, Central Park, Broadway and dinner.
And instead of giving you one packing list, I’ll show you how to build your own (so it fits your trip, your style and your colors).
Here’s what you’ll learn today:
✅ What to wear in NYC in December, with 28 outfits by activity and every piece linked
✅ How many pieces to pack for 4, 7 or 10 days, and how to pick colors that all go together
✅ The best coats and shoes for New York cold (slush included)

The best NYC winter outfits start with one warm coat, waterproof shoes and thin layers you can take off indoors. For a week in New York in December, pack about 4 sweaters, 2 going-out tops, 3 pairs of pants, 2 or 3 pairs of shoes, plus a scarf, beanie and gloves.
Check the forecast 2 or 3 days before you go, because snow decides which shoes and coat!

📝 How to build your packing list: how many pieces to pack and how to pick your colors
👖 What to pack: Ponte pants | long down parka | waterproof sneakers | cashmere sweaters | merino base layers

❄️ What Is New York Like in December?
December in New York usually means highs around 44°F (7°C) and lows around 32°F (0°C).
The wind between the tall buildings makes it feel colder, and some days it snows. So when people ask me what to wear in New York in December, my answer always starts with the forecast.
Check it 2 or 3 days before you go. It decides two things: your coat and your shoes.
- No snow in the forecast? Regular sneakers are fine.
- Snow or slush? Everything you walk in has to be waterproof.
☔ I don’t pack an umbrella. Check with your hotel or Airbnb before you go, because most have one you can borrow (worst case, you can buy one there if you need to).
🧳 Why a NYC Winter Trip Is Packed Differently
On a New York winter trip, most days have two parts: walking around all day, then dinner or a show at night.
If you want to change your whole outfit twice a day, I’ll be honest: that’s hard to do with a carry-on. You’d need almost double the clothes.
What works better is packing sweaters that are nice enough for dinner. Wear one to dinner first, then wear it again during the day later in the trip.
Then keep your going-out tops to just 1 or 2 and play with your layers at night.
📝 How to Build Your New York Winter Packing List
I’m not giving you one packing list in this post, because your trip, your style and your colors are different from mine. Instead, follow these 6 steps:
- Check the forecast 2 or 3 days before. It decides your coat and your shoes.
- Find your trip length in the table below. That’s how many of each piece you need.
- Pick your colors, so every top works with every bottom.
- Start with your bottoms, then your coat and shoes, then your tops. Bottoms are the hardest to match, so they go first.
- Pick your pieces from the categories below, based on what you’ll be doing.
- Do the try-on check at home before you pack (it’s at the end of this post).
How Many Pieces to Pack for 4, 7 or 10 Days
Use the table as your NYC packing list for winter, whatever your trip length. There are no dresses or skirts on this list. It’s too cold IMO, so I wear pants every day. (sometimes with tights underneath 😅)
But of course you can add them if you like to wear dresses & skirts. Just make sure to count your outfits again. On the days you wear dresses you won’t need a top or bottom.
| Piece | 4 days | 7 days | 10 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday tops | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| Going-out tops | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Base layers | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Bottoms | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| Layers (cardigan, vest) | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Coat | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Shoes | 2 or 3 | 2 or 3 | 2 or 3 |
| Winter accessories | 1 set | 1 set | 1 set |
🧳 The 4 day and 7 day lists fit in a carry-on. For 10 days, it depends on the size of your bag and how bulky your clothes are.
💡 Traveling carry-on? Your coat and your bulkiest shoes go on your body on the plane, so they don’t take up room in your bag.

After Narrowing Down on Your Quantities, Pick Your Colors!
The easiest way to pick colors that look good on you is to use your color season. Took a color quiz? Find your season below.
If you haven’t, pick the row that looks most like the colors you already wear and love.
Keep your bottoms neutral and it’ll be easier to mix and match with your tops and shoes. And keep in mind that dark bottom pieces hide re-wears very nicely 😉

🧳 What to Pack for NYC in December!
Every piece here shows up in the NYC winter outfits further down.
Here are the options for each category, why each one works in the New York cold, and which days it’s good for. Pick your favorites, using the table above for how many depending on the length of your trip.
The goal of this section is to help you think about what you’ll need for your own trip’s activities.
👖 Bottoms
Start here. Wide or straight leg pants go over ankle boots and keep your ankles covered.
Make sure at least one pair is nice enough for a show or dinners.
- Ponte pants: They stretch (hello, subway stairs and 3 hours in a theater seat) and they look polished at dinner. I have the Ponte bootcut and a cropped wide leg pair.
- Wool trousers: Wool is naturally warm, and a tailored trouser looks right for Broadway and dinner.
- Corduroy pants: Just as warm as Ponte, and the texture keeps outfits from looking flat in photos. I have mine in burgundy.
- Dark jeans: They go with every top. Tradeoff: denim gets cold and holds moisture when it’s wet, so wear tights underneath on colder days.
- Merino travel pants: They don’t wrinkle, they’re comfy on a long flight, and they’re warm for how thin they are.
💡 Make sure at least one pair fits over merino tights for the coldest days.
🧥 Coat (Pick One)
The coldest days of your trip decide your coat:
- Below 30°F (0°C): a long down parka, even for nights out. It comes off when you walk into the restaurant or theater, and what people see is what’s underneath. I know it’s tempting to want to pack two coats, but they take so much space!
- Low 30s to mid 40s°F (0 to 7°C): a shorter puffer works. Hip length or longer is better when you’re standing outside. This depends on your cold tolerance of course. (I personally prefer the longer ones)
- Mild and dry: a wool coat is the nicest looking option. My top pick if it’s mild!
✈️ Traveling with just a carry-on? Pick one coat and wear it on the plane.
If you don’t mind checking a bag, a second, nicer coat for evenings is fine too. It’s your vacation, girl! Do what makes you happy!
- Long down parka with a hood: The warmest option. The hood blocks wind and snow, and the length covers your hips and legs. Good ones: the Quince Responsible Down Hooded Long Parka, the Outdoor Research Coze (rated for 0 to 25°F), the Lands’ End Expedition Parka, and the Canada Goose Mystique if you want to splurge.
- Shorter puffer: Warm and easier to wear all day. I have a packable puffer, and the Quince Responsible Down Puffer is thicker and warmer than mine.
- Wool coat: The most polished look for Broadway and nicer dinners. Tradeoff: it’s not waterproof, and it lets more wind through than a puffer.

👢 Best Shoes for NYC Winter (2 or 3 Pairs)
Pick one walking shoe and one nicer pair. A third pair is optional.
Slush puddles at the crosswalks are deeper than they look, so on snowy days everything you walk in has to be waterproof.
- Waterproof sneakers + wool socks (walking days): The waterproof layer makes them warmer than regular sneakers, and they’re comfy all day (not for deep snow, though). I have the Vessi Soho. The On Cloud 6 Waterproof is the waterproof version of the On Clouds I own, and the comfiest pick if your feet tend to hurt. The Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof is another good one.
- Waterproof Chelsea boots (slush and rain): Easy on and off, and wide or straight pants go right over them. Try the Blundstone 558 or the Ariat Wexford (very popular with my community).
- A nicer ankle boot (Broadway and dinners): The Blondo Villa 2.0 waterproof bootie is a favorite with my readers, and there are more waterproof Blondo boots here. Dry forecast? I own the Quince sock booties, and they look great with wide leg pants and with tights!
- Snow boots (only if real snow is in the forecast): The Sorel Snow Angel or any Sorel snow boot for deep snow.
- Leather sneakers (dry forecast only): The Quince leather sneakers in black go with everything.
❌ Skip suede. They’re not good for wet weather, plus the city salts the sidewalks, and rock salt can ruin suede.
Before you pack:
- Don’t travel with new shoes. Break them in at home first.
- Try every pair with the thick socks you’ll actually wear.
- Try every pair with every bottom.

🌡️ Base Layers
A base layer is the thin long sleeve top that goes under your sweaters. Pick thin and fitted, so your coat still closes.
Bring one light and one dark, so they work under any sweater. (this depend on trip length and your sweater colors)
Pick ones you’d be happy to be seen in. Subway stations and museums run hot, and if the sweater comes off, the base layer is your outfit.
- Merino (my pick): Warm but breathable, so you don’t overheat indoors, and you can wear it a few times before it needs a wash. Try the Quince merino long sleeve or Unbound Merino (I have their fitted V-neck).
Can’t wear wool? These aren’t as warm as merino and don’t fight odor the same way, so plan to wash them more often:
- Cashmere tee: the softest option.
- Tencel long sleeve: smooth and gentle on sensitive skin.
- Cotton long sleeve: no animal fiber at all.
- 32 Degrees: the budget pick, and still a warm base layer.
🧶 Everyday Sweaters
Every sweater goes over a thin base layer, so pick knits that still fit under your coat. Bulky sweaters won’t, and they take up half your bag. Also, skip puffy or bell sleeves. They bunch up under a coat.
Pick nice fabrics, so the same sweaters can go to your nicer dinners:
- Cashmere crewneck: Warm without bulk, packs small, and works from a museum to dinner. My first Quince cashmere crewneck is 4 or 5 years old and still in my rotation.
- Cashmere turtleneck: Covers your neck when the wind hits, so you’re still warm when the scarf comes off. I have it in burgundy.
- V-neck sweater: A little dressier, so it goes from day to dinner. Try it over your base layer and check what shows at the neckline.
- Alpaca sweater: Very warm for how light it is, and the fuzzy texture looks great in photos. I have a cream alpaca turtleneck.
- A patterned sweater: One is enough, as long as it goes with all your bottoms. Try a Quince striped sweater, Boden stripes, or House of Bruar for a classic European feel, like their Fair Isle or striped fisherman crew.
- Other shapes: A cashmere hoodie, quarter zip or polo sweater keeps your outfits from all looking the same.

✨ Going-Out Tops
These are just for dinner and Broadway shows, so pick what makes you feel dressed up.
- Silk blouse: The easiest way to look dressed up, and it packs flat. Tradeoff: it’s the coldest top, so bring a wrap or a blazer.
- Velvet: It looks like the holidays and it’s warmer than silk, so it’s perfect for New York Christmas outfits. Try Boden velvet tops or the Quince velvet blazer.
- A printed blouse: A print hides suitcase wrinkles.
- A going-out shirt: House of Bruar has more colors and prints if you want something a little different.
- A wool blazer: Goes over a silk blouse or a sweater and makes any outfit dressier.
💡 No going-out top for a night? Wear your nicest sweater, or button your cardigan and wear it as the top!
🧥 Layers
Pick layers that open in the front, so they come off fast in a hot museum without messing up your hair or makeup.
Carry a day bag so the layer has somewhere to go when you take it off. I use this backpack in the colder seasons.
- Cashmere cardigan: Warm and light, and buttoned up over a base layer, it’s also a top. House of Bruar has more cardigan colors if you want something different.
- Cashmere sweater vest: Warmth on your core, with no sleeves to bunch up under your coat.
- Puffer vest: Extra warmth for long days outside. I have one, and it’s great under a coat, but remember to try them on together first!
🥶 Really cold day? Stack two layers and take them off as you go. (and plan for indoor activities that day)
🧤 Winter Accessories
Your head, neck, hands and feet lose heat first, so that’s where accessories help most. They’re also the easiest way to add color. Plus, they pack small!
- Scarf: Wrap it high when the wind hits between buildings. I have the Quince tartan cashmere scarf.
- Cashmere wrap: Your dinner layer over a silk blouse, and a blanket on the plane. Mine’s burgundy.
- Beanie: If you wear makeup, skip light colors (makeup rubs off on them).
- Touchscreen gloves: I’m not a glove person, but they’re good to have.
- Cashmere headband: Covers your ears and fits under a hood.
- Merino tights: The easiest way to add warmth under pants. I wear Unbound Merino.
- Wool socks: Warm feet all day, and they make waterproof sneakers warmer.
- Crossbody bag: Hands free, and it fits under a theater seat.

👗 28 NYC Winter Outfits by Activity
These NYC winter outfits are inspiration, not one packing list.
Each of these New York winter outfits has a different style and color palette. To pack, build your list with the steps above, then use these looks to see how your pieces come together.
🥶 Extra cold day? You can add a base layer under any of these outfits.
Try the whole outfit on at home first.
If your sweater is a light color, wear a light base layer under it, because a dark one will show through. Also check the neckline, so the base layer doesn’t stick out above your sweater.
If you get hot indoors, make your base layer a merino T-shirt instead of long sleeves (that’s what my husband does). Or you could also swap one sweater for a short sleeve cashmere T-shirt.
1️⃣ What to Wear on Travel Days
If you’re traveling with just a carry-on, your coat and your bulkiest shoes go on your body, not in your bag.
I know carrying a big coat through the airport is annoying. But it’s cold when you land, so you need to walk out of the airport ready for it.
- Short trip? Wear a comfy outfit that isn’t on your packing list, like a Spanx set.
- 7 or 10 days? Build your travel outfit from your packing list, so every piece earns its spot.
- Test your layers at home. The sweater you take off on the plane has to fit in your personal item (I use a backpack).
- Skip travel day gadgets. They’re one more thing to pack for just a few hours of use.
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Short trip: Spanx Air Essentials set + camel long parka + On Cloud 6 Waterproof + coral scarf + crossbody
- Short trip: red cashmere crewneck + Spanx wide leg pants + navy long parka + grey Vessi Soho + tartan scarf + crossbody
- 7 or 10 days: forest green cardigan + black merino base layer + Ponte wide leg pants + black long parka + Blundstone 558 + burgundy scarf + crossbody
- 7 or 10 days: striped sweater + merino travel pants + olive Outdoor Research Coze + Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof + mustard scarf + crossbody

2️⃣ NYC Christmas Outfits for the Rockefeller Tree
Seeing the tree means standing still outside, usually in a crowd. Standing still feels much colder than walking, so this is the day for your warmest layers.
- Go early (6 to 9 AM) or late (after 11 PM) for fewer crowds.
- The wind picks up between the tall buildings, so wrap your scarf high.
- Wear touchscreen gloves, so you don’t take them off for every photo.
- A bright scarf or sweater against a dark coat is what shows up in your photos 📸
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Black long parka + pink cashmere turtleneck + black wide leg Ponte + Blondo Villa 2.0 booties + cobalt scarf + gloves + crossbody
- Chocolate Lands’ End parka + House of Bruar Fair Isle sweater + olive corduroy pants + Ariat Wexford Chelsea boots + red scarf + gloves + crossbody
- Camel wool coat + House of Bruar striped fisherman crew + navy wool trousers + Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof + red scarf + gloves + crossbody
- Navy long parka + green cashmere V-neck + dark straight jeans + cognac Blondo booties + pink scarf + gloves + crossbody

3️⃣ Holiday Markets and Window Shopping
Markets and window shopping mean hours outside, mostly standing or walking slowly. That’s when the cold gets into your legs and feet.
- Wear merino tights under your pants and wool or cashmere socks with your boots. If you prefer leggings, they work under pants too.
- Stack two thin layers instead of one thick sweater, so you can take one off if you need to.
- A crossbody keeps your hands free for a hot drink ☕
- Snow on the ground? This is the day for snow boots.
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Grey long parka + navy alpaca sweater + grey wool trousers + grey Vessi Soho + burgundy scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Black long puffer + red cashmere crewneck + charcoal wool trousers + Blundstone 558 + grey scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Olive Outdoor Research Coze + forest green cashmere crewneck + camel puffer vest + brown corduroy pants + Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof + forest green scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Navy long parka + camel cashmere crewneck + brown wool trousers + On Cloud 6 Waterproof + brown scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody

4️⃣ Museums (and Bad Weather Days)
Museums are freezing outside and warm inside, and you’ll be there for hours. Wear one layer that comes off fast, with a full outfit underneath.
- Check your coat if the museum has a coat check, so you’re not carrying it for hours.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’re on your feet all day, even indoors.
- Keep a backup list of indoor plans for freezing cold days.
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Charcoal wool coat + burgundy cable knit sweater + ecru straight jeans + Blondo Villa 2.0 booties + burgundy scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Black short puffer + chocolate alpaca sweater + black wide leg Ponte + Quince sock booties + brown scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Camel wrap coat + black cashmere vest over a red cashmere crewneck + grey merino pants + On Cloud 6 Waterproof + red scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Navy peacoat + grey cashmere polo sweater + camel corduroy pants + Ariat Wexford Chelsea boots + camel scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody

5️⃣ Central Park and Long Walking Days
These are the days you walk the most, outside, for hours. Your shoes matter more than anything else here.
- Wear waterproof shoes and wool socks. Slush hides at every crosswalk, and wet feet will end your day early.
- Stand back from the curb when cars go by.
- Pick pants with a little stretch for all the subway stairs.
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Olive Outdoor Research Coze + burgundy cashmere turtleneck + dark straight jeans + grey Vessi Soho + grey scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Canada Goose Mystique + camel cashmere hoodie + black wide leg Ponte + black On Cloud 6 Waterproof + check scarf + camel beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Navy Lands’ End parka + forest green cashmere quarter zip + grey merino pants + Blundstone 558 + forest green scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Grey long parka + navy cashmere cardigan buttoned up + olive corduroy pants + Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof + tartan scarf + navy beanie + gloves + crossbody

6️⃣ What to Wear to a Broadway Show in Winter
You’ll sit for 2 to 3 hours, and the theater is warm. Wear something comfy to sit in, with a layer you can take off in your seat.
- Coat check isn’t always open, and the line after the show can take 15 to 20 minutes. You might end up keeping your coat with you.
- Your bag has to fit under your seat, so bring a small crossbody. (the same one you’ll use for day time)
- Broadway and dinner usually happen the same night, so any outfit here works for dinner too.
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Camel wool coat + burgundy velvet blazer over a black silk blouse + black wide leg Ponte + Blondo Villa 2.0 booties + houndstooth scarf + black beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Black long parka + charcoal wool blazer over a forest green silk bow blouse + grey wool trousers + Quince sock booties + forest green scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Chocolate wool coat + navy velvet top + camel wool trousers + Ariat Wexford Chelsea boots + plaid scarf + navy beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Navy wool coat + black cashmere cardigan over a red silk blouse + dark straight jeans + black Quince leather sneakers + red scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody

7️⃣ Dinner Out
This is your dressiest look. Wear your nicest sweater or a going-out top, with your nicer boots.
- Bring your wrap for a chilly restaurant, especially over a silk blouse.
- Earrings or a necklace turn a sweater into a dinner outfit.
- Dinner and a show usually happen the same night, so any of these work for Broadway too.
The 4 outfits in the image below:
- Charcoal wrap coat + forest green velvet blazer over a black cashmere crewneck + black wool trousers + Blondo Villa 2.0 booties + tartan scarf + black beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Black short puffer + red printed blouse + black wide leg Ponte + Quince sock booties + red scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Grey wool coat + chocolate cashmere V-neck + dark straight jeans + brown Blondo booties + houndstooth scarf + brown beanie + gloves + crossbody
- Navy long parka + burgundy silk blouse + grey wool trousers + Blundstone 558 + burgundy scarf and beanie + gloves + crossbody

❄️ Snow in the Forecast? Make These Swaps
Snow doesn’t mean starting over. Make these swaps to any of the NYC winter outfits above:
- Swap your sneakers for Sorel Snow Angel boots or waterproof Chelsea boots.
- Add a cashmere headband under your hood.
- Swap jeans for Ponte or wool trousers with merino tights underneath.
- Budget to take more cabs/ubers and walk less.
✅ Try This On at Home Before You Pack
Before you pack your NYC winter outfits, check these 7 things at home:
- Every layer fits under your coat, and you can still move your arms.
- At least one pair of pants fits over merino tights.
- Every pair of shoes works with your thickest socks and with every bottom.
- Every top works with every bottom.
- Your base layers don’t show through light sweaters or stick out at the neckline.
- The layer you take off on the plane fits in your personal item.
- Your coat closes (can be tricky around the hip area with longer coats. Try things on!)
And there you have it. 28 NYC winter outfits for every plan on your trip.
Check the forecast 2 or 3 days before, start with your bottoms, and build from there.
Have the best time in New York, and wear the comfy shoes 😉

NYC Winter Outfits FAQ
What should I wear in NYC in December?
Wear a warm coat, waterproof shoes, and a sweater over a thin base layer, with a scarf, beanie and gloves. Pants are better than skirts in the cold, and merino tights underneath help on the coldest days. Check the forecast 2 or 3 days before you go, because snow decides your shoes.
Any tips on how to dress in NYC in December without overheating indoors?
Wear layers that open in the front, like a cardigan, so they come off fast in museums, shops and the subway. Pick a base layer you’d be happy to be seen in, because it becomes your outfit when the sweater comes off. Carry a day bag so your layer has somewhere to go.
What are the best shoes for NYC in winter?
Waterproof sneakers with wool socks are the most comfortable for walking days, and waterproof Chelsea boots are great in slush and rain. Bring one nicer ankle boot for Broadway and dinner. Pack snow boots only if real snow is in the forecast.
Do I need a long puffer coat for New York in December?
If the forecast is below 30°F (0°C), a long down parka is the warmest option, even for nights out. For average NYC cold, a shorter puffer that covers your hips is enough. A wool coat works on mild, dry days.
What should I wear to a Broadway show in winter?
Wear something comfortable to sit in for 2 to 3 hours, like Ponte pants or wool trousers with a nice sweater, silk blouse or velvet top. Add a layer you can take off in your seat, since theaters are warm. Bring a small crossbody, because your bag has to fit under your seat.
Can I wear jeans in NYC in winter?
Yes, dark jeans go with every top and work well for museums and walking days. Denim gets cold and holds moisture when it’s wet, so wear merino tights underneath. On snowy days, Ponte or wool trousers are warmer.
What are good winter outfits for women over 50 in New York?
Start with comfortable, stretchy pants like Ponte, supportive waterproof shoes, and nice knits that go from day to dinner. The same tips work for winter outfits for women over 40 or over 60: one warm coat, layers you can take off, and accessories to add color. These NYC winter outfits are built around comfort first, so you can walk all day and still feel dressed up at dinner.
