The best Mexico vacation outfits for a beach town like Puerto Vallarta start with two pairs of linen pants, a few tanks, two little dresses, and two pairs of sandals. That mix packs flat in a carry-on and still gives you 15 outfits for 8 days, with room left over for a bikini and your toiletries.
🧳 What I Packed for Puerto Vallarta (The Whole Carry-On)
I always start with my bottoms first. Pick your pants and skirts, then build tops and layers around them. It’s the single trick that keeps my bag light, because every top has to earn its place by working with more than one bottom.
If you’ve been wondering exactly what to pack for Puerto Vallarta, here’s the entire capsule, exactly as it went into the bag. It doubles as a solid answer to what to pack for a beach vacation anywhere warm.

💡 Travel day tip: since this all packs so small, you’ll have plenty of room, so wear whatever is most comfortable on the plane. I love a one and done piece like the SPANX Air Essentials maxi dress, or a Sexy Modest Set that looks put together but feels like pajamas. Always bring one light layer too, because planes are freezing.
A quick word on what to actually expect here, so you pack right. Puerto Vallarta is cobblestone almost everywhere, especially in the Zona Romantica, so comfortable shoes aren’t optional, they’re the whole game.
Summer, is hot and very humid with a big afternoon rain most days, quick and dramatic and then gone. The high season from November to February flips it: sunny, dry days and evenings that turn surprisingly cool once the breeze comes off the water.
And you’ll be living in easy pieces for the two things you’ll do most, beach days and boat days out to the little coves you can only reach by water.
☀️ 15 Mexico Vacation Outfits for 8 Days in Puerto Vallarta
Here’s where the mixing and matching pays off. All 15 of these Mexico vacation outfits come from the little capsule above. Every one of these Puerto Vallarta outfits uses the same pieces, restyled and relayered, so every day feels different even though the bag stays tiny.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #1
Beige knit tank + navy tapered linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
This is my no thinking, walk out the door look. The beige ribbed knit tank is a touch dressier than a cotton tank, so the whole thing reads polished even though it took me nine seconds. Beige and navy always looks intentional, even when it isn’t.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #2
Black sporty LBD + platform sandals + crossbody bag
Every trip needs one dress you can pull on when it’s too hot to think about clothes. This sporty little black dress is that dress. It’s stretchy, it doesn’t wrinkle, and it takes up almost no room in the bag.
On top of being super comfy, it has a built in bra and shorts. It’s technically a skort dress.
I wore it straight from a morning walk to lunch without a second thought.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #3
White tank top + navy tapered linen pants + chambray shirt + platform sandals + crossbody bag
Same navy pants as Outfit 1, completely different feeling. A plain white tank with the chambray worn open on top is my go to for a breezy morning when the cafe AC runs cold, and it always runs cold. Roll the sleeves and you’re set for hours.
I of course took if off during the day and stuffed in our day backpack (not pictured)
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #4
Navy linen top + striped linen pants + white nappa leather slides + crossbody bag
The navy linen top is flowy and comfortable. A pretty simple but comfy look paired with the soft striped linen pants. This is what I wear when I want to look pulled together but it is genuinely too hot for anything structured.
Two linen pieces, all breeze. I wore this to explore the beach town of San Pancho. So cute! I basically spent the whole day in my bathing suit.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #5
Navy long sleeve blouse + navy tapered linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
Navy on navy, kept flat and easy with the slides. The long sleeves on this blouse are sheer, so you get a little arm coverage without a drop of extra heat. This is my daytime version of the look, the one I wear to a slow lunch before the sun really cranks up.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #6
Linen gingham dress + white nappa leather slides
I wore this gingham dress two ways. As a real little dress with sandals for lunch, and thrown straight over my bikini as a beach cover up, barefoot in the sand.
Full honesty though: I loved this dress, and then I left it behind at the beach one day. Folded it, set it down, and only realized once we were a car ride and a boat ride away. So learn from me. Love your pieces, but keep one eye on them 😅
🎯 You can also wear it with the platform sandals when you want it a little dressier for dinner.

Puerto Vallarta Outfit #7
Navy linen top + navy tapered linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
Here’s a fun trick. The navy top and the navy pants worn together look like a matching set, even though they are two separate pieces you already packed. Add a little straw headband and you’ve got a whole DIY set moment for zero extra suitcase space.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #8
Navy long sleeve blouse + striped linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
The navy blouse again, this time over the striped linen pants. Dark top with a light bottom is a formula I lean on constantly because it is flattering and it feels a step more dressed than a tank. Perfect for a nicer dinner.
A reminder to check the temperature before your trip. If visiting in the summer, a blouse like this might be too hot for you. For the winter months it should be fine at night because there is a cool breeze.
🧳 Want a packing list like this one, made for YOUR trip?
Here’s the thing nobody tells you: building the capsule is the hard part. Once you know your pieces, packing takes ten minutes and you never overpack again.
So let me do that part for you. Tell me where you’re headed and how long you’ll be gone, and I’ll build you a custom packing list, the same way I built this one for Puerto Vallarta.
Two questions. Ten seconds. A whole trip sorted ⬇️
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #9
White cotton gauze button down + navy tapered linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
Buttoned up and tucked in, the white gauze shirt turns those same navy pants into something you could wear to a nice dinner. Gauze breathes almost as good as linen, which really matters when it is still 90 degrees at 7 pm.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #10
White tank top + striped linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
My easiest daytime look: white tank, striped linen pants, sandals. Plus, it was the perfect outfit for sunset drinks, so not just good for daytime.
These platform sandals were basically my only shoes for 6 months (our trips are usually about that length). I wore them so much! I will definitely be ordering in a new color.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #11
Black sporty LBD + white cotton gauze button down + platform sandals + crossbody bag
The same little black dress from Outfit 2, now with the white gauze shirt knotted at the waist over it. One layer completely changes the outfit. This is how you get two totally different looks out of one dress without packing a second dress or more skirts.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #12
White tank top + navy tapered linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
Proof that a plain white tank and navy pants is never boring when the fit is right. Tucked in, with the platforms giving a little lift, this carried me through a full day of wandering the malecon and it still looked fresh at dinner.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #13
Chambray shirt + black sporty LBD + white nappa leather slides + crossbody bag
A third way with the black dress: chambray worn open over it, slides on. Softer and more casual than the dress on its own, and perfect for a daytime stroll when you want your shoulders covered from that strong Mexico sun.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #14
White boat neck top + striped linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
A boat neck is a small upgrade that makes a big difference. With the striped linen pants and the platforms, this one feels a little coastal, and it took me all of a minute to put together.
If the morning is cool or you’re headed somewhere over air conditioned, add the chambray shirt open on top and you’re covered, literally.
Puerto Vallarta Outfit #15
Linen gingham dress + white cotton gauze button down + white nappa leather slides + crossbody bag
Last one, and one more layering trick. The gingham dress with the white gauze shirt tied at the front takes that little beach dress and makes it completely lunch appropriate. Same dress, brand new outfit.
Whichever button down you reach for, this move works every time.
🌦️ Packing for the Puerto Vallarta High Season (Nov to Feb)
Here’s the good news: for the cooler high season, not much changes. The days are still warm and sunny, so almost all of these Mexico vacation outfits work exactly as they are.
The one thing to know is that in the evenings, especially right next to the water, the breeze can make it feel a good bit cooler than the daytime temperature suggests. It’s not cold, it’s just that little dip that makes you want something on your arms.
So for a winter trip, I’d add just one warm layer. A denim jacket and a pashmina is honestly all you need. Throw it over any of these looks for dinner and you’re perfectly comfortable.
As always, check the temperature a couple of days before your trip because cold fronts can happen! You might need a sweater.
How Many Times I Actually Wore Each Piece:
This is my favorite part, because it shows why these Mexico vacation outfits work so hard. When it comes to Mexico beach outfits, a few pieces did almost all the heavy lifting. Here’s the honest tally across all 15 looks.
- Navy tapered linen pants: worn 5 times (the MVP of the whole bag – I washed them of course. We had a washer)
- Platform sandals: worn 10 times
- White nappa leather slides: worn 6 times
- Striped linen pants: worn 4 times
- Navy long sleeve blouse: worn 2 times
- White tank top: worn 2 times
- Black sporty LBD: worn 3 times (once alone, twice layered)
- White cotton gauze button down: worn 3 times (on and off, not the whole day)
- Chambray shirt: worn 3 times (on and off, not the whole day)
- Navy linen top: worn 2 times
- Linen gingham dress: worn 2 times
- Beige knit tank: worn 1 time
- White boat neck top: worn 2 times
- Dusty pink crossbody bag: worn every single day/night
🔗 Links To Every Piece I Packed:
Want to shop the whole thing in one place? Here’s every piece behind these Mexico vacation outfits, with a quick note on why it earned its spot in the bag.
- Navy tapered linen pants. My hardest working bottom, dresses up or down.
- Striped linen pants. Light, breezy, and instantly a little more fun.
- White tank top. The base for half the looks in this post.
- White boat neck top. A tiny upgrade that looks quietly expensive.
- Beige knit tank. Reads dressier than a cotton tank, packs like nothing.
- Navy linen top. Clean straps mean it doubles as a set with the navy pants.
- Navy long sleeve blouse. Sheer sleeves for coverage without heat.
- White cotton gauze button down. My best layering piece, tucked or tied.
- Chambray shirt. Throw it open over anything for that easy morning look.
- Yellow linen pashmina. Doubles as a wrap, a scarf, and a plane blanket.
- Black sporty LBD. No wrinkles, no fuss, three ways to wear it.
- Linen gingham dress. Beach cover up and cute little dress in one.
- White nappa leather slides. The flat, go everywhere shoe.
- Italian leather platform sandals. A little height, still comfy for all day.
- Dusty pink leather crossbody bag. Hands free and it goes with all of it.
This packing list carried me through 6 weeks in Puerto Vallarta. I adjusted it for an 8-day trip which is more realistic. I promise it works! My packing lists are small, but functional and I always leave room to spare. I know you end up packing a little bit more than me, and that’s ok. That’s why I leave the extra room 😉
And there you have it. 15 outfits, 8 days, one little carry-on.
If there’s one thing I hope you take from this, it’s that you do not need a giant suitcase to feel good every single day of your trip. A few pieces that genuinely mix and match will always beat a bag stuffed with things you only wear once.
Pick your bottoms first, add tops and layers that play well together, and let a couple of shirts do the restyling for you. That’s the whole secret behind these Mexico vacation outfits, and it works for any warm destination, not just for Puerto Vallarta.

🗣️ Mexico Vacation Outfits FAQ
What should I pack for Puerto Vallarta in the summer?
Think light and breathable, because summer here is hot and humid with quick afternoon rain. My Puerto Vallarta packing list is two pairs of linen pants, a few tanks, two easy dresses, a couple of layering shirts, two pairs of sandals, and one bikini. Skip anything heavy or fussy. If it needs ironing or feels sticky in the heat, leave it home.
Is Puerto Vallarta humid, and which fabrics actually hold up?
Yes, very, especially in the summer rainy months. Your best friends are linen, cotton, and cotton gauze, because they breathe and dry fast when you get caught in a downpour. I avoid anything synthetic and clingy, since it traps heat and shows every bit of sweat. That’s exactly why so many of these looks lean on linen.
What shoes should I bring to Puerto Vallarta?
Two pairs of sandals is plenty for a week. I bring one flat pair for all day walking and one slightly dressier platform for dinners. Just know that a lot of Puerto Vallarta is cobblestone, so a chunky, stable sole beats a delicate heel every time. Comfort wins here, always.
What do people wear to dinner in Puerto Vallarta? Do I need to dress up?
If you’re wondering what to wear in Puerto Vallarta for dinner, it’s easier than you’d think. Puerto Vallarta is pretty relaxed, so you rarely need to go formal. For most dinners, linen pants with a nice top, or a simple dress with a little sandal, is exactly right. A few upscale spots in the Romantic Zone or at the marina lean dressier, so I pack one look I feel a bit special in, like the gauze shirt over the navy pants. That one covers almost anything.
What should I not pack for a Mexico beach vacation?
When people ask me what to pack for Mexico, the more useful question is what to leave out. Leave the heels, the heavy jeans, and the just in case pile you never actually touch. You also don’t need five bathing suits or a different bag for every outfit. One bikini you can rinse and one crossbody that goes with everything will carry your whole beach vacation packing list. Overpacking is the thing people regret most, never underpacking.
Is Puerto Vallarta chilly during the winter high season?
Not really chilly, but the evenings from November to February are noticeably cooler, and the breeze off the water makes it feel even fresher after sunset. The days stay warm and beautiful, so you’ll still wear the same summer pieces. Just toss a denim jacket or a warm pashmina in your bag for dinners and you’re set.
How many outfits do I really need for a week?
Fewer than you think. This whole post pulls 16 different looks out of about a dozen pieces, and you truly only need one outfit per day plus a beach look. The trick isn’t packing more, it’s packing pieces that combine, then letting a shirt or a pair of sandals restyle them. Give yourself a rinse in the sink halfway through and even a small capsule feels endless.
