If San Miguel de Allende has been on your travel list for a while, I completely understand. It is one of those cities that just gets you. The cobblestone streets, the colorful facades, the rooftop bars at golden hour… it is genuinely one of the most beautiful places I have ever spent time in.
Gordon and I were there for two full months this past April and May, and honestly? I could have stayed longer.
⚠️ But here is the thing nobody tells you before you go: it is not your typical warm Mexico destination. Yes, April and May are gorgeous and sunny, but the mornings and evenings can genuinely surprise you with how cool they get. We are talking 57°F on the low end.
And because the city sits at high altitude, the sun is intense during the day but the temperature drops fast once it does. So if you are trying to figure out what to pack for a San Miguel trip, the answer is: layers. Smart ones.
I lived out of one carry-on for both months, and this packing list reflects exactly what I brought.
No extras, no “just in case” pieces that never got touched. Every single item earned its place. This packing list is built for 10 days without doing laundry, and every piece mixes and matches to create 15 outfits.

San Miguel de Allende is a highland city in central Mexico that sits at over 6,000 feet above sea level. For a 10 day trip in April or May, pack 4 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 dress, and 3 layers. Temperatures range from 57°F at night to 92°F in the afternoon, so layers are non-negotiable.
Two pairs of shoes handle everything: flat slides for daytime and platform sandals for evenings. Stick to a neutral and cohesive color palette so every piece works with every other piece, and the whole thing fits in a carry-on.
🌤️ San Miguel de Allende Weather in April and May
This is important context before you even start your Mexico packing list, because San Miguel de Allende is not like Cancun or Tulum. The climate is highland and semi-arid, which means warm, sunny days and genuinely cool nights. Do not let the “Mexico” part fool you into packing only tank tops.
During our two months there in April and May, temperatures ranged from a low of 57°F all the way up to 92°F on the warmest afternoons. Most days felt like a beautiful 75°F by midday, but mornings and evenings required a real layer, not just a light scarf. By late May we also started seeing some afternoon rain showers, which marks the beginning of rainy season. Keep that in mind if you are visiting later in spring.
The altitude (about 6,100 feet above sea level) also means the sun hits harder than you expect. Sunscreen is non-negotiable. And the temperature swings between morning and afternoon can be 25 to 30 degrees, which is why layering is so central to any good San Miguel de Allende outfit formula.
Every look in this post is built with that in mind.
🧳 What to Pack for a San Miguel Trip: The Full Packing List
Everything below fits in one carry-on. Every piece was chosen because it works with at least two or three other items on this list. This is your complete Mexico trip packing list for San Miguel de Allende in the warm months.
✈️ Travel Day: The Matching Set Approach
For travel days, I always recommend a matching set (for short trips only). Cozy enough for a long travel day, put-together enough to go straight to dinner once you land. Three options depending on your vibe and budget:
- The splurge: Spanx Air Essentials matching set. Buttery soft, holds its shape, and looks way more elevated than anything else. This is the one I reach for on long travel days.
- The budget-friendly pick: Mix and match options from Quince. Incredibly soft, breathable, and honestly cute enough to wear out for a casual lunch once you arrive.
- The Sexy Modest travel set: This is a more polished, modest set that still reads as a matching travel look without being athleisure.
Whichever set you choose, add your long cardigan over (it doubles as a blanket on the plane), slip on the Nappa leather slides and throw on your leather crossbody. Done. You will look intentional, feel comfortable for hours, and have zero desire to change when you land.
Tops (4)
- Bodysuit (black, XS) [feel free to replace for a long sleeve top]
- Cropped tank top (black, S)
- Ribbed tank top (moonstone blue, XS)
- Waffle knit sweater tank (white, S)
Layers (3)
This is where the what to wear in Mexico conversation gets interesting for San Miguel specifically. Unlike beach destinations, you need real layers here, not just something to throw on in air conditioning.
- Fisherman cashmere vest (ivory, XS). My most-reached-for piece on the entire trip
- Chambray shirt (light indigo, XS). Works open as a layer or buttoned as a top
- Long cardigan (heather grey, XS). The cozy all-rounder for cool evenings out
If you are visiting during the cooler months (November through February), swap the linen pashmina for something warmer and consider adding a real jacket or trench coat. Browse all pashmina options here to find what works best for your travel dates.
Dress (1)
- Cotton jersey midi dress (black, S). This is one of those pieces that works for exploring by day and dinner by night.
Bottoms (3)
- Wide leg linen pants (sky blue mariner stripes, XS)
- Tapered linen pants (flax, XS). Your neutral workhorse bottom
- Ponte wide leg pants (black, size 2, inseam 26). Your travel day and cool evening hero
Shoes (2)
Two pairs handle everything from cobblestone streets to rooftop bars. Keep in mind that San Miguel streets are beautiful but uneven, so comfort matters as much as style.
- Nappa leather slides (bone, true to size) — also love Birkenstock leather sandals as a similar option
- Leather platform sandals (cashew — if between sizes, size up). These were comfortable to wear at night and during long walking days too.
⚠️ Remember to never travel with new shoes. Break them in before your trip!
Accessories
- Leather crossbody bag (dusty rose). This has been my everyday bag for two years.
- Linen pashmina (butter yellow). This piece doubles as a wrap, a scarf, and an extra layer at dinner. For colder months, browse all my favorite pashminas here.
Jewelry
San Miguel is an arts and culture city. People dress with intention here. A few dainty pieces go a long way, and they take up zero space in your carry-on.
- Lab grown diamond studs | Pearl earrings
- Pearl pendant necklace
- Gold choker
- Triple bezel choker
- Pave disk necklace
Keep everything organized inside a travel jewelry organizer so nothing gets tangled at the bottom of your bag.
Other Essentials
- Pajamas
- (12) Underwear
- (3) Bras [1 strapless]
- (4) Pairs of socks [optional if you pack shoes that require them]
- Sunglasses (my pair | browse all sunnies)
⚠️ I didn’t pack a hat and it was a mistake. Please bring a hat to San Miguel. The sun is brutal!
Toiletries
- Face sunscreen (the altitude in San Miguel makes this truly non-negotiable)
- Vitamin C serum
- Small makeup bag
- Refillable travel containers (shampoo and body moisturizer)
- Bar soap
- Razor

🎯 15 San Miguel de Allende Outfits from This Packing List
These are the actual Mexico vacation outfits I built from the list above. Every formula is linked so you can shop directly. You can also mix and match to create even more combinations beyond what I have listed here.
San Miguel de Allende Outfit #1: Easy Daytime Exploring
🎯 Ribbed tank top + tapered linen pants + leather slides + crossbody bag
This is your go-to for wandering through the Jardín Allende, popping into galleries, or grabbing a late breakfast at one of the chic rooftop spots.
The ribbed blue tank and flax linen pants sounds simple on paper, but the color combination is really what makes it. That specific shade of blue against the natural linen is one of my favorite pairings in this whole list.
Add the cashmere vest on top if the morning is still cool when you head out.
San Miguel Outfit #2: Chambray and Black on the Cobblestones
🎯 Chambray shirt open + black cropped tank + black ponte wide leg pants + nappa leather slides + dusty rose crossbody
I wear some kind of version of this outfit constantly.
The chambray shirt open over the black tank is one of those combinations that just works for San Miguel because mornings there are genuinely cool, and by noon you are peeling off layers. You throw the shirt on when you leave, and by the time you sit down for lunch you are tying it around your waist.
The Ponte pants are comfortable enough to walk cobblestones all day without thinking about it. Zero effort, looks put together. That is the whole goal.
San Miguel Outfit #3: Perfect for Nicer Dinners Out!
🎯 Black cotton jersey midi dress + platform sandals + gold choker + gold earrings + crossbody bag
This dress is a dream come true for traveling. Can be as casual or as dressy as you’d like, and it’ll never look out of place.
I wore it so much during our 2 month stay in San Miguel. The fabric is wrinkle free and warm, but not too warm, so it’s easy to throw in a layer or a pashmina when the sun goes down.
It’s almost exactly as the Spanx Air Essentials maxi dress, but for a third of the price! (check out if it’s in stock here – I’m wearing size S and I’m 5’4″ for reference)

Outfit #4: Casual Breezy Afternoon
🎯 Cropped black tank + wide leg striped linen pants + chambray shirt open over + leather slides
The chambray shirt worn open and loose over the cropped tank softens the graphic stripe of the linen pants and gives you just enough coverage for the midday sun.
These looks are both great for market visits, afternoon walks, or any relaxed day in the city.

San Miguel Outfit Idea #5: All-Black For Nicer Dinners + Sunset Rooftops
🎯 Black bodysuit + black Ponte pants + platform sandals + pearl earrings + pearl necklace
I’m such a huge fan of all black outfits.
This body suit is buttery soft and flattering and looks great with high waisted pants. Keep in mind that even though the body suit has buttons to close it, you can just wear it as a regular top. That’s what I did here 😉.
If you’re trying all black outfits for traveling (or in life), I recommend that you play with textures to make them feel more intentional and elevated. And also, don’t forget about accessories!

Outfit 6: Soft Tonal Neutrals
🎯 White waffle knot tank + flax tapered linen pants + long grey cardigan + leather slides + diamond studs
White, flax, grey. Tonal neutrals from head to toe.
This is one of those outfits where you feel like you have nothing to wear, and then you put it on and look completely polished. The long cardigan adds structure and warmth. Perfect for an art opening, a nicer restaurant, or to transition from day to night without actually having to shower or change outfits.
I personally prefer to go straight to dinner on most days and go back to our hotel earlier 👵 That’s why I look more “dress up” during the day. It works well for me.
Outfit Idea #7: Chambray and Linen for Market Days
🎯 Blue tank top + chambray shirt + flax tapered linen pants + leather slides + crossbody bag
All blues. The chambray open over the ribbed tank with the striped linen pants is one of those accidental combinations that just clicks.
Everything is in the same blue and white family so it reads as a cohesive look without trying. The leather slides are the right call here because you are going to walk, and San Miguel will remind you of that!
San Miguel Outfit #8: Cashmere Vest and Linen
🎯 Fisherman cashmere vest + flax tapered linen pants + platform sandals + dusty rose crossbody + dainty necklaces
The ivory fisherman vest over the flax linen pants is all one tonal palette, which means it looks intentional without any extra thought. I wore this for a little date night, but it would have been comfortable enough to walk for hours, and not change for the entire day.
This vest is great because it also doubles as a top!
San Miguel Look #9: Monochrome Black
🎯 Cropped black tank + black ponte pants + platform sandals + butter yellow pashmina as a wrap (optional as it cools down at night)
Another head to toe black outfit, but with different accessories. Optional: add your pashmina over it as it cools down at night.
The Ponte pants and cropped tank are both incredibly comfortable, and the monochrome base makes accessories pop. Wear the pashmina when the breeze picks up and let it hang loose when you warm up.
Outfit Idea #10: Ribbed Tank with Stripes
🎯 Ribbed blue tank + wide leg striped linen pants + leather slides + pearl earrings + pearl necklace
The blue of the ribbed tank picks up beautifully against the blue stripe in the linen pants.
Wear this one on a warm afternoon when you do not need a layer yet but want to look put together. The gold pearl necklace keeps the neckline from feeling bare without overcomplicating anything.
San Miguel Outfit #11: Sweater Tank and Stripes
🎯 White waffle knIt tank + wide leg striped linen pants + platform sandals + crossbody bag
White and blue stripes is a classic combination that always looks fresh and intentional.
The texture of the waffle tank adds just enough interest to balance the print of the wide leg pants. This is the kind of San Miguel de Allende outfit you put on and feel immediately good in.

Outfit #12: Cool Early Morning Layers
🎯 Black tank top + fisherman cashmere vest + black Ponte pants + leather slides + pearl pendant necklace
This is the outfit for a cool morning when you are not sure how warm it will get.
The ivory cashmere vest over the black tank is a beautiful combination, and the black Ponte pants pull it all together. You can wear it with or without the vest. It all works out.
My husband usually carries a small backpack and I just stash it in there if it gets too hot. A vest is a great piece to have for when you’re bloated from too much Mexican food 😅

San Miguel Outfit #13: Perfect for a Winery!
🎯 Blue tank top + chambray shirt + linen pants + platform leather sandals + crossbody bag
Italian looking wineries in San Miguel? Yes please!
I wore this simple outfit to spend an afternoon at Viñedo San Lucas. It was perfect.
I could remove the shirt when it got hot, and put it back on as the sun went down. That’s why I love traveling with button down shirts so much! They’re such an easy layer to handle.
San Miguel Outfit #14: Long Cardigan and Ponte for a Cool Day
🎯 Sweater tank + long grey cardigan + black Ponte pants + leather sandals + pearl necklace + crossbody bag
This is the full-layer outfit for a genuinely cool day or a rainy afternoon in late May.
The long cardigan over the sweater tank with black Ponte pants is cozy, pulled together, and works beautifully for a slow morning at a café or an afternoon museum visit.

This sweater tank is such a great piece I accidentally discover during a long fall in Italy trip years ago. Now I rarely travel without it.
San Miguel Outfit #15: Simple Tank Top + Linen Pants
🎯 Black tank top + beige linen pants + platform leather sandals + crossbody bag + gold jewelry
This is an easy outfit formula that you can recreate with pretty much any tank top and pants you have. Black tank, beige linen pants, good shoes, done. It doesn’t sound like much, but I promise it works.
The platform sandals and crossbody do the heavy lifting. If you pick the right pants, shoes and accessories, it will look like you actually tried. Here’s proof ⬇️
San Miguel de Allende is the kind of place that gets under your skin.
Two months in and I still did not want to leave. There is something about the light there in the late afternoon, hitting those colorful walls, the church bells at the Parroquia echoing across the city… I could go on. But you should just go.
And when you do, you will not need a giant suitcase. You just need the right pieces. This packing list for Mexico worked for two months straight (I just added a couple extra pieces). But my point is, it will definitely handle a week or two in San Miguel.
Pack light, arrive ready, and enjoy everything this gorgeous town has to offer!
Safe travels 💜

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About What to Pack for a San Miguel Trip
Plan for warm sunny days and cool mornings and evenings. Temperatures in April and May range from around 57°F at night to 90°F or higher in the afternoon. Lightweight layers are essential: linen pants, tanks, and a cashmere or knit vest or cardigan for evenings. Do not skip sunscreen and a hat. The altitude makes the sun more intense than you expect.
Yes, absolutely. The key is choosing pieces that layer and mix and match well. A small list of tops, a few bottoms, one dress, and three layering pieces can create more than enough mexico trip outfits for a week or longer. Stick to a cohesive color palette and every item will work with everything else in your bag.
Two pairs are enough. Flat slides or sandals for daytime walking (the cobblestones are real, so make sure they have a secure fit), and a platform or slightly elevated sandal for evenings. Skip stilettos. The streets are beautiful but uneven, and comfort matters as much as style.
Creative and stylish, but not formal. People dress with intention here. You will see everything from linen sets to flowy dresses to smart casual looks. There is no need to pack anything stiff or overly formal, but you will feel most at home in outfits that look put together rather than purely athleisure. Elevated casual works for everything from daytime exploring to evening dining.
Both, honestly. It is a highland city at over 6,000 feet above sea level. Warm sunny days are common, but nights and early mornings are legitimately cool. During the warmer months of April and May, expect highs around 85 to 92°F and lows around 55 to 60°F. During winter months, nights can drop significantly colder. Always pack a real layer regardless of when you go.
