Winter Travel Packing: 14 Mistakes I Stopped Making (Carry-On Friendly Guide)

in Travel Style on 05/13/26

I used to be the worst winter packer. I’m talking ten sweaters, two coats, four pairs of jeans, the cute boots, the warm boots, the “what if I need them” boots… you get the idea. My suitcase was always heavy, always full and somehow I was still cold half the time.

Then I started traveling full time in 2021 and everything had to fit in a carry on. Winter trips forced me to get really honest about what I actually needed and what was just luggage anxiety in clothing form. After dozens of cold weather trips (Chicago winters, Europe in November, US trips in the mountains, you name it), I’ve made every winter travel packing mistake in the book.

This post is the cheat sheet I wish I’d had years ago. No more puffy chaos, no more cotton regret, no more boots that look cute but freeze your feet by lunch.

Here’s what you’ll learn today:

✅ The 14 winter travel packing mistakes I stopped making (and what to do instead)

✅ How to pick the right coat, fabrics and shoes so you stay warm without overpacking

✅ The carry on winter packing tricks I rely on for every cold weather trip

Winter travel packing is the art of staying warm with the least amount of stuff. The most common winter travel packing mistakes come from overpacking, choosing the wrong fabrics and ignoring how layers actually work. This post breaks down 14 mistakes to avoid so you can pack lighter, stay warmer and never check a bag for a winter trip again.

❄️ 14 Winter Travel Packing Mistakes To Stop Making

1️⃣ Mistake: Overpacking “Just In Case” (Including Too Many Fancy Outfits)

The “just in case” mindset is the #1 reason winter suitcases explode. We pack for the trip we might have, not the one we’re actually taking. Three options for every occasion, two backup sweaters, a dressy outfit for that one fancy opera night that probably won’t happen.

Here’s the thing about winter travel: you’ll be wearing your coat almost the entire time. What’s underneath doesn’t change as much as you think. Two or three good base outfits in a neutral palette mixed with smart layers and accessories will get you through a week long trip with zero outfit repeats.

And the “fancy outfit”? Most winter trips need maybe one going out look. A little black cashmere dress with tights and cute boots works for almost any restaurant or event. That’s it. You don’t need three.

🥶 Too cold? You can still layer it with a simple cashmere sweater or cardigan on top. And after you add a cashmere wrap and winter accessories you’re golden!

Here’s an example of the going out outfit formula ⬇️

14 Winter Travel Packing Mistakes To STOP Making - You Can Travel With Just a Carry-on for Winter!

2️⃣ Mistake: Forgetting The Skincare Essentials

The small stuff is what makes or breaks a winter trip. Lip balm for chapped lips. Hand cream because dry winter air is brutal. Any prescriptions or supplements you take daily. A travel sized moisturizer because hotel air will suck the moisture out of your skin in a single night.

Build a tiny winter essentials kit and keep it ready to go. Mine lives in a small zip pouch in my carry on, and I refill it the day before a trip. It’s the difference between feeling miserable and feeling fine when the weather actually hits.

🎯 I travel with this antioxidant balm from Primally Pure and wear it at night. And for daily skincare during winter a vitamin C serum, eye cream and daily moisturizer are non-negotiable. Don’t skip your daily routine during winter! (including sunscreen)

3️⃣ Mistake: Packing Your Warmest Piece Instead Of Wearing It

This one is so simple but I see people get it wrong constantly. Your warmest, bulkiest piece never goes in the suitcase. It goes on your body for the travel day. Always.

That means your heavy puffer coat, sometimes your boots, and a sweater. Wear them on the plane. Yes, even if you’re flying out of somewhere warm. Airports are freezing, planes are freezing, and you’ve just bought yourself a ton of suitcase space.

Listen, I know this is annoying, but it’s part of the game if you want to travel in the winter with just a carry-on. I always have my coat with me. What I like to do is to keep it simple with a set like this one. Comfortable, warm (but not too warm) and stylish!

4️⃣ Mistake: Bringing The Wrong Coat

Your coat is the single most important piece you’ll pack for a winter trip. It has to be warm enough for the coldest day, work with every outfit, and not be so bulky that it ruins your travel day. Easy, huh?

❌ What doesn’t work: that gorgeous long synthetic coat that looks amazing but isn’t actually that warm. A leather jacket that’s more about the vibe than the warmth. A trench coat (trench coats are water resistant at best, not winter coats).

✅ What works: a puffer coat in a neutral color (mine is burgundy, but black, camel, olive or navy all work), or a proper wool coat if you’re more city than ski town. One coat. Make it the right one.

🎯 Also read: how to choose the right jacket for cute winter outfits (organized by temperature)

5️⃣ Mistake: Not Testing Your Coat With Your Layers BEFORE You Leave

Your coat fits beautifully at home. Over a t shirt. The problem is, in real winter weather, you’ll be wearing it over a base layer or a sweater or two. Suddenly the zipper won’t close, the arms feel tight or the whole thing looks weird.

Test the whole stack before you pack. Put on the base layer, the cashmere sweater, the winter coat.

Zip it up. Move your arms. Sit down. If anything feels off, you’d rather know now than on day one of your trip when you’re standing in line at the Christmas market.

This same rule goes for your puffer vest if you’re packing one. Layer it on top of the sweater AND under the coat. Does everything still work together? Good. Pack it.

💡A good tip is to always size up when buying winter coats.

Answer them here ⬇️

6️⃣ Mistake: Too Many Bulky Sweaters

I used to think more sweaters meant warmer. Wrong. Two chunky cable knits will fill half your carry-on and you won’t even be warm. This is one of the most common winter travel packing mistakes I see.

✅ The fix is to swap bulky for thin and warm. Cashmere is the queen here. A cashmere turtleneck is warmer than a chunky acrylic knit and takes up half the space. A long cashmere cardigan works as a layer AND as a coat substitute indoors.

For a one week trip I pack four sweaters max (I wear one, so only need to pack 3 inside my carry-on). That’s it. I make sure they mix with every bottom I bring and layer under my coat without adding bulk.

💡 Pro tip: don’t pack sweaters with flutter sleeves, huge puffer sleeves or bat wings. Those type of sweaters are not meant to be worn with jackets.

14 Winter Travel Packing Mistakes To STOP Making - You Can Travel With Just a Carry-on for Winter!

7️⃣ Mistake: Cotton For Cold Weather

Cotton is not a great fabric for winter travel and most people pack it without thinking. A cotton t shirt under a sweater feels fine at 70 degrees. In real cold, cotton absorbs moisture from your body, stays damp and makes you cold.

Swap your cotton base layers for merino wool long sleeve tees or any merino wool pieces. Merino wicks moisture, regulates temperature and you can wear it multiple days without it smelling. It’s basically magic 💫

Important: try your layering pieces with your sweaters in advance to make sure it all works! You’re seeing a pattern by now, right? Try things on at home!

8️⃣ Mistake: Bringing The Wrong Socks

If your feet are cold, you’re cold. Full stop. And cotton socks are the fastest way to have cold feet all day.

Pack merino wool socks instead. The brand Bombas makes great ones, and cashmere socks are a luxury upgrade if you want them. They keep your feet warm even if they get a little damp from snow, they don’t smell, and they last for days.

I pack two to three pairs for a one week trip. That’s enough to rotate, rinse one in the sink if needed, and never run out.

9️⃣ Mistake: Too Many Jeans

Jeans are heavy, they take forever to dry if they get wet, and most people pack way more than they need. Three pairs of jeans for a week long trip is overkill.

I pack mayyyybe one pair. I actually prefer other bottom pieces like Ponte wide leg pants for comfort and warmth, and wool pants for dressier days. Three bottoms total. Done.

Jeans can be worn multiple days in a row. Nobody knows. Nobody cares. Wash them halfway through if you really need to. You only need one pair. Bonus points if you can layer them with tights underneath. [continue reading mistake #10]

🔟 Mistake: Not Testing Your Pants With Thermal Tights Underneath

This one is sneaky. You pack your favorite jeans thinking “I’ll just throw tights underneath when it’s really cold.” Then you get to your destination, layer thermal tights or merino base layers under them, and the pants won’t button. Or they fit but the waistband digs in all day.

Just like with the coat, test it at home. Put the tights on. Put the pants on. Walk around. Sit down. Make sure the whole stack works before you pack it.

This is also why I love Ponte wide leg pants for winter travel. They have just enough stretch to layer over tights without any waistband drama, and they’re warmer than jeans on their own.

⚠️ Just as important, make sure your pants match your boots!

1️⃣1️⃣ Mistake: Cute Shoes, Cold Feet

Listen, I love a cute pair of boots as much as anyone. But fashion booties with thin leather soles and no insulation are not winter shoes. They look great in photos and they will make your feet miserable in actual cold weather.

For winter travel I want shoes that are warm, waterproof or water resistant, comfortable enough to walk in for hours, and stylish enough to wear with everything. Chelsea boots, Italian leather boots, or Blondo waterproof boots all check those boxes.

If you’re going somewhere with real snow or ice, get proper waterproof boots with traction. Cute is not worth a broken ankle.

1️⃣2️⃣ Mistake: Wearing Your Bulky Boots On The Plane And Bringing Nothing Else

Smart in theory. Wear the bulkiest boots on the plane to save suitcase space. The problem is when those are the ONLY shoes you bring. Now you’re stuck in heavy boots for every single day of the trip, including the day you have dinner indoors and your feet are dying.

The fix is to wear your bulkiest pair on the plane AND pack one lighter pair. For me that’s usually white leather sneakers or leather loafers. This depends on the temperature of course.

❄️ If you’re going somewhere with snow, your travel day shoes ARE your snow boots and your packed pair is your indoor or dinner option. Unless is a short trip. In that case, you should have room to pack your winter boots.

1️⃣3️⃣ Mistake: Skipping Winter Accessories

Winter accessories are the biggest warmth upgrade for the smallest amount of suitcase space. A good scarf, gloves and a hat together weigh less than one sweater and do five times the work.

I never travel without a cashmere silk pashmina. It works as a scarf, a wrap on the plane, a lap blanket when restaurants are cold, and a layer over my coat in really cold weather. A cashmere wrap scarf works the same way. I save the wrap for very cold trips because it does take more space, but it is way warmer!

✅ Add a cashmere beanie, a cashmere headband and a good pair of gloves and your warmth game is on point without taking up significant real estate in your suitcase.

1️⃣4️⃣ Mistake: Packing The Wrong Pajamas

Winter pajamas need to actually be warm. Sounds obvious. But so many people grab the silk shorts or the thin cotton tank set out of habit, then end up freezing in cold hotel rooms or chilly Airbnbs.

Pack long sleeve bamboo jersey pajamas (or browse all pajamas here) for actual winter trips. They’re soft, warm, breathable and they pack flat. If the room runs warm, you can sleep in a t shirt. If it runs cold, you’re covered.

⭐️ Bonus: long sleeve pajama tops double as a cozy lounge layer if you want to read on the couch in the morning before you get dressed.

Quick Recap! 14 Winter Travel Packing Mistakes To Avoid!

❌ Overpacking “just in case” → ✅ Pack 2 to 3 base outfits and one little black cashmere dress for going out

❌ Forgetting skincare essentials → ✅ Build a small kit: lip balm, hand cream, moisturizer, vitamin C, meds

❌ Packing your warmest piece in the suitcase → ✅ Wear your heavy puffer coat and warmest boots on the plane, always

❌ Bringing the wrong coat → ✅ One puffer coat or wool coat in a neutral color

❌ Not testing your coat with layers → ✅ Try the full stack at home: base layer, cashmere sweater, coat. Zip it up.

❌ Too many bulky sweaters → ✅ 3 cashmere sweaters max, thin and warm beats bulky and heavy

❌ Cotton for cold weather → ✅ Merino wool base layers, every time

❌ Bringing the wrong socks → ✅ Merino wool or cashmere socks, never cotton

❌ Too many jeans → ✅ One pair max, rotate with ponte wide leg pants or wool pants

❌ Not testing pants with thermal tights → ✅ Try pants with thermal tights underneath before packing

❌ Cute shoes, cold feet → ✅ Chelsea boots, Italian leather boots, or waterproof boots

❌ Only bringing bulky boots → ✅ Wear the bulkiest pair on the plane, pack leather sneakers as your lighter pair

❌ Skipping winter accessories → ✅ Cashmere silk pashmina, beanie, headband, gloves

❌ Packing the wrong pajamas → ✅ Long sleeve bamboo pajamas, never silk PJS

And there you have it. The 14 winter travel packing mistakes I used to make so you don’t have to.

If you take only one thing from this post, let it be this: winter travel packing is about choosing better, not packing more.

The right coat, the right fabrics, the right shoes and a few good accessories will keep you warmer than a suitcase stuffed with backups. Promise.

Thanks for reading 💚

Aimara

Winter Travel Packing FAQ

How do you pack for winter travel in a carry on?

Winter carry on packing comes down to layering thin warm pieces instead of packing bulky ones. Wear your heaviest coat and boots on the plane, pack two sweaters maximum (cashmere or merino), use thermal base layers instead of cotton, and stick to a neutral color palette so everything mixes. I’ve been doing winter travel in a carry on since 2021 and the trick is choosing the right fabrics, not stuffing more in.

What should you not pack for winter travel?

Skip cotton base layers, bulky cable knit sweaters, multiple pairs of jeans, fashion booties that aren’t actually warm, full size toiletries and any “just in case” outfits. The biggest winter packing mistakes come from packing for a trip you might have instead of the one you’re actually taking. If you wouldn’t wear it in your everyday life, you won’t wear it on vacation either.

What fabrics are best for winter travel?

Merino wool, cashmere and bamboo are the best fabrics for winter travel. Merino wool wicks moisture, regulates temperature and doesn’t hold odor, which makes it perfect for base layers and socks. Cashmere is warm without bulk and packs flat, which is why it’s the top fabric for sweaters in winter packing. Avoid cotton for base layers because it traps moisture and makes you cold.

How many outfits do I need for a one week winter trip?

For a one week winter trip you need about three to four base outfits. Two sweaters, three bottoms, three to four base layer tops, one going out look, plus accessories. You’ll be wearing your coat almost everywhere so the outfits underneath repeat without anyone noticing. The key to winter travel packing is choosing pieces that mix with everything else you brought.

What’s the best coat for winter travel in Europe?

For Europe winter packing, a warm puffer coat in a neutral color is the most versatile option. It works for sightseeing, dinner out and cold trains. If you want something dressier, a wool coat in black, camel or navy is a good alternative. Just make sure it fits over a base layer and a sweater before you commit, and that it’s actually warm enough for the coldest day on your forecast.

Should I pack jeans for a winter trip?

One pair of jeans is enough for most winter trips. Jeans are heavy, take a long time to dry and can be worn multiple days in a row without washing. Pair them with two other bottoms like wool pants or ponte wide leg pants for variety. Winter packing tips almost always come down to picking versatile pieces over multiple versions of the same thing.

What winter travel essentials should I never forget?

The winter travel essentials I never skip are a warm packable coat, merino wool socks, a cashmere or wool scarf, lip balm, hand cream and at least one base layer top. Small things like lip balm and hand cream make a huge difference because winter air is brutal on skin. Build a tiny essentials kit and keep it ready to go for every cold weather trip.

In the morning we went to the beach to snorkel and in the afternoon we explored Mayan ruins and had drinks and dinner. I needed sun protection and sneakers because they don’t recommend to walk the ruins in sandals (uneven terrain). I was able to change the wet bathing suit at the beach restaurant and didn’! get sunburn! Win win!!

We definitely left a piece of our hearts there, but we also learned so much and we know we will be back many times! And it feels good to be with family this time of the year.

I know I didn’t do a good job at posting in here. Honestly, I thought it was going to be easier, but starting a new Instagram, blog and YouTube channel from scratch for @waysoftheworld_ took a lot more time than I ever thought it would! So now, I’ll try to share some of my favorite photos from this trip in here because it’s never too late 🙃

Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by h Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by how beautiful it is, all the different landscapes, the food, and above everything, the people ❤️

Looking back to a few weeks ago when I was really afraid of going on this trip, thinking about all the things that could go wrong, being a little upset with myself in a way for not wanting the traditional life path I always thought was my only choice; get married, buy a house, have kids, save money and travel when you retire. That’s not for me.

I’m very happy I followed my heart 💕 I wrote a letter to myself on the blog: “What’s the best that can happen if the worst happens?” You can check it out by clicking the link in my bio. I hope it inspires you to think about what YOU really want in your heart, make a plan and go after it (but be patient). I promise that if I did it, so can you.

I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂 I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂

Our days in beautiful Kas are almost over. I’m leaving a piece of my heart in this cute little town and we will definitely be back! Now it’s time to hop on a 6 hour bus to Pamukkale and see what that place is all about!

Honestly, the only reason we are going there is because of me. G is not too crazy about it, but I’ve seen it on Instagram so much that I wanted to see for myself what the buzz was all about. So I’ll keep you posted on what it actually is!

If you are interested in knowing more about Kas (and all the amazing places we are visiting) we share a lot more on @waysoftheworld_ 💞

I was brave 💙 This was the most amazing experienc I was brave 💙

This was the most amazing experience. I was SO nervous and anxious before but somehow I managed to push through and tried this very scary thing for the first time. And you know what I learned? That I loved it! I would do it again a million times! It wasn’t scary at all. It was all in my head and it wasn’t real. Also, they had the sweetest dog at the shop named Lucy that really help me not to think about it (swipe to see her 😍)

We didn’t do any crazy tricks like G did and it was a very peaceful flight. It’s up to you how you want to do it.

I can see why Ölüdeniz is one of the top places in the world to go paragliding. If you only want to do it once to cross it off your bucket list, this is the place you go to. We shared a post about with useful information in case you are interested. Link in bio + stories.
