Packing for a work trip is its own kind of stress. It’s not the flight, it’s the Sunday night pile on the bed: one outfit for the plane, one for every day of meetings, something for dinner with the team, a backup in case the first one wrinkles… and suddenly you’re checking a bag for 5 days 😅
I’ve been living out of a carry-on since 2021, and the strategy that makes that possible doesn’t change when there’s a conference room involved. Bottoms first, every top works with every bottom, layers that slide over everything, and nothing that needs an iron.
So many of you asked for a work trip packing list that follows those rules. So I built one. Below you’ll find the 15 pieces, the 12 fall work outfits that are possible, and which situation each outfit is for: the flight, the big meeting, the all day session, the team dinner. All of it!
Here’s what you’ll learn today:
✅ The 15 piece work trip packing list for 5 days in fall (with the sizes and colors I wear, so you can gauge the fit)
✅ 12 fall work outfits sorted by situation, so you know exactly what to grab for the presentation and what to grab for the airport
✅ How many times each piece gets worn across the 12 outfits, so you can see nothing in the bag is dead weight

A work trip packing list for 5 days in fall needs 15 pieces: 5 tops, 3 layers, 3 bottoms, 2 dresses, and 2 pairs of shoes, all in neutrals so every top works with every bottom. Those 15 pieces make 12 work outfits that cover the flight, meetings, all day sessions, and dinners, and they fit in one carry-on with no iron needed.
🧳 Start here: how this work trip packing list works
Full disclosure: I don’t take work trips myself. But packing for a business trip uses the exact same rules I use to live out of one carry-on, so I built this list the way I’d build it for a friend who does.
Second confession: this list breaks my own quantity rules. For a regular 5 day trip I’d pack fewer pieces and rewear more, because nobody on vacation notices you wore the same top on Tuesday and Thursday.
A business trip packing list is different. The people who saw you on Monday are the same people at Wednesday’s dinner, and one of those days probably has a presentation attached.
So you need more variety than a vacation, without a bigger bag. Here’s how the list pulls that off:
✅ Bottoms first. Pick your 3 bottoms, then only pack tops that work with all 3. That’s where the 12 outfits come from.
✅ One color story. Black, espresso, camel, bone, and one forest green. Everything touches everything, so getting dressed at 6 am in a hotel takes 2 minutes.
✅ Slim tops, roomy layers. Every top has fitted sleeves, so every jacket slides over it without bunching.
✅ Wear your dinner pieces early. The dress you wear to dinner on night one gets restyled for a meeting on day 3, and nobody notices because it looks like a different outfit.
✅ Two shoes, two jobs. Booties do the airport, the walk to the venue, and dinner. Pumps only show up for the meeting room.
✅ Nothing that needs an iron. Ponte, cashmere, washable silk, and AirEssentials come out of the bag ready (this matters more on a work trip than on any vacation, in my opinion).
The 5 day math is 1 travel day, 3 full work days, and 1 travel home day. 12 outfits is more than 5 days needs on purpose, so you pick based on what your schedule throws at you instead of guessing a week ahead.

👗 The 15 pieces on this work trip packing list
Every piece below is one I own, so I’m listing the exact size and color I wear. For reference, I’m 5’4″, between an XS and an S, and I run cold.
Tops (5)
The tops are the variety engine of this business trip packing list. Five tops over 3 bottoms is where most of the 12 outfits come from, so every single one has to work with every single bottom.
- Featherweight Cashmere Ribbed Tank in black, size S. The base of the whole list. It goes under every jacket on the list and holds its own on the flight. A tank in a conference room can feel bare, so on this list it’s always paired with a layer (that’s the point of it).
- 100% Organic Cotton Waffle Cropped Sweater Tank in camel, size S. Cropped, so it lands right at the waistband of high waisted pants without a tuck. Under the camel knit blazer it reads like one piece.
- Washable Stretch Silk Tie Neck Blouse in forest green, size XS. This is the top that turns a pair of pants into a presentation outfit. Bow tied is one look, bow left hanging is another, and it’s washable silk, so a spill at lunch isn’t a crisis.
- Cotton Turtleneck in white, size S. Fine gauge, so it tucks into the skirt without bulk. Also the top I’d wear on the plane if the trip is on the colder side.
- Cotton Cashmere Fitted Ribbed Cardigan in mocha heather, size S. It counts as a top because it buttons all the way up. Closed, it’s a sweater. Open over the tank, it’s a fourth layer you didn’t have to pack.
💡 Pro tip: if you’re taller or bustier, size up on the cardigan and the tank. Ribbed knits stretch, but you want them to skim, not cling, for a meeting.
Layers (3)
The layers are what make the same tank look like 3 different outfits. Two structured, one casual, and all 3 are open front or button front, so they go over every top.
- 100% Merino Wool Collarless Cropped Jacket in heather bone, size XS. The lady jacket of the list: gold buttons, cropped, and it sits over dresses and high waisted pants without bunching at the hip. The collarless neckline leaves room for a necklace.
- 100% Organic Cotton Knit Blazer in camel, size S. Heads up, it’s thinner than it looks in the photos and the sleeves are 3/4 length. Treat it as the indoor blazer for meeting rooms and dinners, not the layer that keeps you warm outside.
- 100% Organic Cotton Sweater Jacket in black and white stripes, size XS. The casual one, for the flight and the lobby breakfast run. Stripes over black pants look intentional, which is the whole trick when you’re half awake.
🥶 Cold city? Add one coat and wear it on the plane, so it never takes up room in the bag.
Bottoms (3)
Two pants and a skirt, all pull on or elastic waist, all fine to sit in for 8 hours. If you’re wondering what to pack for a business trip, this is where I’d start.
- Ultra-Stretch Ponte Wide Leg Pants in espresso, size S, regular length. These run longer than most Ponte pants, so the regular length is made for heels on me at 5’4″ (there’s also a long). High waisted, which is what lets the cropped tops work.
- Black Cropped Ponte Pants, size 2, 26″ inseam. Cropped means the shoe shows, so these work with both the booties and the pumps. Ponte packs flat and comes out of the bag with zero creases.
- Cashmere Ribbed Midi Skirt in beige, size S. A knit skirt, so it packs like a sweater and stretches when you sit. With tights and booties on cool days, bare legs and pumps if the hotel keeps the ballroom at 75°F.
💡 Warm city? Swap the cashmere skirt for a Ponte pencil skirt that works year round and keep everything else the same.

Dresses (2)
Two dresses, two very different jobs. One is the dinner dress, and the other is a mini that works twice because it changes personality with the layer on top.
- SPANX AirEssentials Tie Waist Midi Shirt Dress in olive, size XS. The dinner dress that feels like a sweatshirt. Tie the waist, add the booties, done. If olive isn’t your color, the other AirEssentials dresses pack the same way.
- Cashmere Mini Dress in black, size S. With tights and booties under the bone jacket it’s a meeting outfit. With the camel blazer and pumps it’s a dinner outfit. Same dress, nobody notices. One honest note: it hits above the knee on me at 5’4″, so if you’re taller, check the length before you commit.
Shoes (2)
Two pairs, both true to size, both in colors that go with every outfit on the list. Each one has a clearly defined job, so you never stand in the hotel room debating.
- Italian Leather Stretch Sock Bootie in black. The sock fit means no gap at the ankle when you wear them with tights, and the block heel is walkable for the airport and the walk to the venue. Wear these on the plane and save the room in your bag.
- Italian Leather 65mm Block Heel Pump in nude. I have these and they’re comfortable. Pack a nude color, because it matches everything on this list. 65mm is the heel height you can stand in through a 2 hour presentation.
💡 Pro tip: the pumps never leave the building. Booties for anything with sidewalks, pumps for anything with a conference table.
Accessories
- Tights. The Spanx tights in these photos are the ones I wear with the skirt and the mini dress. For a colder trip, merino wool tights that actually keep you warm are the swap.
- A leather crossbody bag. One small bag that goes to dinner without changing. Quince’s leather crossbody bags are the ones I keep going back to, and I ranked the 5 best crossbody travel bags if you want to compare.
- Your personal item. I usually fly with a backpack, but a business trip is the one time I’d swap it for a large leather tote that holds a laptop. It goes from the plane to the meeting without looking like luggage, and the crossbody fits inside it for the flight.
- Jewelry. Pearl drop earrings and a layered gold necklace, and that’s it. Quince’s jewelry is what you see in every one of these outfits. Small pieces that read as polished do more for a work outfit than a big statement piece, and they’re the business travel essentials that weigh nothing.
💼 12 fall work outfits from the business trip packing list, sorted by situation
Every outfit below is tagged with the situation it’s built for, because what to pack for a work trip depends on what your days look like. Every piece is linked in the formula so you can grab the exact one.
✈️ Travel day: cold plane, straight to a meeting
Your travel day outfit has to survive a freezing plane, a wrinkle test, and the very real chance you land and go straight into a meeting. Both of these do.
Outfit 1: bone merino cropped jacket + black cashmere tank + espresso wide leg Ponte pants + sock booties
This is the one to wear if you land and walk into a meeting. Ponte and merino don’t crease, the jacket keeps you warm on the plane, and you look like you planned it.
Outfit 2: striped sweater jacket + black cashmere tank + black cropped Ponte pants + sock booties
The relaxed version, for when you fly in the night before. The sweater jacket is soft enough to nap in and still looks put together at the hotel lobby breakfast.
🎤 The big meeting or presentation
These are the outfits for the day that matters most, and it’s where the pumps come out. Business travel attire for the presentation should be the most structured look in your bag, so the jackets and the silk blouse do the work here.
Outfit 3: camel knit blazer + black cashmere mini dress + nude block heel pumps
A dress under a blazer is the fastest way to look like the person running the meeting. Keep the blazer on if the room is cold, and let the dress stand alone if it’s warm.
Outfit 4: forest green silk tie neck blouse + espresso wide leg Ponte pants + nude block heel pumps
This is the presentation outfit. The bow does the talking, the wide leg pants are long enough for the pumps, and the green against espresso is the one color moment on the list.
Outfit 5: camel knit blazer + camel waffle sweater tank + black cropped Ponte pants + nude block heel pumps
Camel on camel with black pants reads like a suit without being one. Great for a day of client meetings where you want to look polished but approachable.
Outfit 6: bone merino cropped jacket + black cashmere mini dress + black tights + sock booties
Same black dress as outfit 3, completely different job. With the cropped jacket, tights, and booties, it’s a meeting outfit for a cooler day, and nobody clocks that it’s the dress from dinner.
🧳 Is this the right work trip packing list for YOUR trip?
A 5 day fall trip with meetings and dinners is one version, and a 2 day trip to a warm city is a different list. If you’ve ever packed for the wrong version and ended up ironing in a hotel room at 6 am, I built the quiz for you.

🪑 All day sessions, conference days, and desk days
This is the sitting for 8 hours in a freezing room, then walking across the venue, then sitting again outfit. What to wear to a conference comes down to comfort you can’t see: stretch waistbands, knits, and shoes you forget you’re wearing.
Outfit 7: mocha ribbed cardigan + cashmere midi skirt + black tights + sock booties
Head to toe knits, which means you can sit through a full day of sessions and never once tug at your waistband. Conference outfits for women don’t get more comfortable than this while still looking polished.
Outfit 8: black cashmere tank + cashmere midi skirt + black tights + sock booties
The stripped back version of outfit 7 for a warmer venue. Keep a jacket in your bag for the inevitable arctic breakout room (they’re always freezing, I don’t know why).
Outfit 9: forest green silk tie neck blouse + black cropped Ponte pants + nude block heel pumps
The blouse from the presentation, restyled with the cropped pants. Good for a day of back to back meetings when you’ll mostly be sitting at a table.
Outfit 10: mocha ribbed cardigan + espresso wide leg Ponte pants + nude block heel pumps
Mocha on espresso is the tonal outfit that photographs well in the team group shot 📸 It’s also the warmest of the pants outfits, so save it for the coldest day on the forecast.
🍷 Dinner with the team or a client
Business travel outfits for dinner need one thing: they can’t look like what you wore all day. Both of these read as a change without a full change.
Outfit 11: SPANX AirEssentials tie waist shirt dress + black tights + sock booties
This is the wear it on night one dress. It’s the only piece on the list that doesn’t mix with anything else, and it earns its spot because it’s the one outfit that needs zero thought after a 10 hour day.
Outfit 12: white cotton turtleneck + cashmere midi skirt + nude block heel pumps
The cleanest look on the list, and the one for a nicer restaurant. Bare legs and pumps if it’s mild, tights and booties if it’s not, and a coat on top either way.
🛍️ Shop the work trip packing list (and how many times each piece got worn)
The number next to each piece is how many of the 12 outfits it appears in. That’s the answer to the question I get most about this work trip packing list, which is “won’t I be repeating outfits?”
You’re repeating pieces, not outfits, and that’s the difference (nobody at the conference is keeping track of your tank top, I promise 😅).
Tops
- Featherweight Cashmere Ribbed Tank (worn 3 times)
- Washable Stretch Silk Tie Neck Blouse (worn 2 times)
- Cotton Cashmere Fitted Ribbed Cardigan (worn 2 times)
- 100% Organic Cotton Waffle Cropped Sweater Tank (worn 1 time)
- Cotton Turtleneck (worn 1 time)
Layers
- 100% Merino Wool Collarless Cropped Jacket (worn 2 times)
- 100% Organic Cotton Knit Blazer (worn 2 times)
- 100% Organic Cotton Sweater Jacket (worn 1 time)
Bottoms
- Ultra-Stretch Ponte Wide Leg Pants (worn 3 times)
- Black Cropped Ponte Pants (worn 3 times)
- Cashmere Ribbed Midi Skirt (worn 3 times)
Dresses
- Cashmere Mini Dress (worn 2 times)
- SPANX AirEssentials Tie Waist Midi Shirt Dress (worn 1 time)
Shoes and accessories
- Italian Leather Stretch Sock Bootie (worn 6 times)
- Italian Leather 65mm Block Heel Pump (worn 6 times)
- Spanx tights (worn 4 times) or Unbound Merino tights for a colder trip
- Leather crossbody bag (worn every day)
- Large leather tote as your personal item (carried every day)
- Pearl earrings and a gold necklace (worn every day)
The single wear pieces (the waffle tank, the turtleneck, the striped jacket, and the shirt dress) are the first ones to cut if you need space or your trip is shorter. The two Ponte pants and the black tank are the last ones I’d touch, because between them they show up in 9 of the 12 outfits.
If you want to shop by fabric instead, every Ponte piece Quince makes and the full cashmere collection are where most of this list came from.
And there you have it. The work trip packing list that fits 5 days of meetings and dinners into one carry-on.
15 pieces, 12 outfits, and every one of them tagged to a situation. The night before you fly, you’re not staring at the bed wondering what a client dinner needs.
If you take one thing from this, take the bottoms first rule. Pick 3 bottoms you can sit in all day, and only pack tops that work with all 3. The rest of the list builds itself from there 😉

Work Trip Packing List FAQ
How many outfits do I need for a 5 day business trip?
Plan for 1 travel day outfit, 3 work day outfits, 1 travel home outfit, and 1 or 2 dinner looks. With a business trip packing list built on 3 bottoms and 5 tops, those 6 to 7 outfits come from 15 pieces, and you’ll have 5 spares to swap in if the schedule changes.
What should a woman pack for a work trip in a carry-on?
A work travel packing list fits in a carry-on when you pick 3 bottoms first, then 5 tops that go with all 3, 3 layers, 2 dresses, and 2 pairs of shoes in wrinkle resistant fabrics like Ponte, cashmere, and washable silk. Keep everything in one color family so every piece mixes, and wear the bulkiest layer and shoes on the plane.
How do I keep work clothes from wrinkling in a suitcase?
Choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle in the first place. Ponte, knits, merino wool, and washable stretch silk all come out of a carry-on ready to wear. Roll knits and Ponte, lay the silk blouse flat on top, and hang everything the minute you get to the hotel.
Can I pack heels for a business trip?
Yes, but pack one pair with a low block heel, around 65mm, and give it one job: the meeting room. Wear a walkable pair like sock booties for the airport, the walk to the venue, and dinner. Two pairs of shoes cover a whole business travel packing list when each pair has a clear purpose.
What do I wear on the plane for a work trip?
Wear an outfit you could walk into a meeting in: stretch pants that don’t crease, a slim top, a structured layer, and your walking shoes. Work travel outfits for the plane should be the warmest pieces on your list, since planes are cold and wearing them saves space in your bag.
What should I wear to a conference for women?
What to wear to a conference comes down to what you can sit in for 8 hours and still look polished. Knit skirts, Ponte pants, a fitted cardigan or blazer, and a low heel or bootie work for general sessions. Keep a layer with you, because conference rooms are almost always cold.
Is a work capsule wardrobe different from a travel capsule?
Slightly. A business casual capsule wardrobe for travel needs more variety than a vacation capsule, because you see the same people every day and some days have a dress code. That’s why a list like this one has 15 pieces for 5 days instead of the 10 or 12 you’d bring on vacation, but the rules underneath (bottoms first, one color story, layers over everything) are exactly the same.
