Styling & Shopping Tips by Body Type:
Use these simple suggestions to help you choose the best-fitting and most flattering pieces from your capsule wardrobe for fall—based on your body type.
Each section includes tips for tops, bottoms, dresses, layering pieces, and color strategy when styling yourself.
1️⃣ Apple Shape:
- Tops: Look for V-necks and relaxed fits that don’t cling to the midsection. Flowy long-sleeve tees and structured sweaters work well.
- Bottoms: Opt for high-rise styles that define your waist and add shape to your lower half—faux leather leggings and black skinnies are ideal.
- Dresses: Choose A-line or empire waist styles. Belted sweater dresses can also work if the belt sits just under the bust.
- Layering: Go for long vests or cardigans that create vertical lines and balance out your shape.
🎨 Color Strategy: Keep tops in darker or solid neutral shades and bring in prints or color on the bottom half to draw the eye downward.
2️⃣ Inverted Triangle:
- Tops: Stick to clean lines and minimal detail—simple long-sleeve tees and fitted knits work well.
- Bottoms: Add volume and interest—go for printed or textured skirts, wide-leg pants, or lighter-colored bottoms.
- Dresses: Choose styles with more flow or detail at the bottom to balance broader shoulders.
- Layering: Try longline cardigans or jackets that add length and softness through the torso.
🎨 Color Strategy: Keep the top half simple in solids or dark tones and use prints, color, or texture on your bottom half to even out proportions.
3️⃣ Rectangle:
- Tops: Go for styles with texture, pattern, or shape—turtlenecks, belted cardigans, or puff sleeves help create curves.
- Bottoms: Look for pieces that add dimension—leather skirts, pleats, or tailored pants with interesting details.
- Dresses: Belted styles, wrap dresses, or body-skimming sweater dresses help define your waist.
- Layering: Choose blazers and coats that nip in at the waist or have structured shoulders to add shape.
🎨 Color Strategy: Try contrast—light top + dark bottom or vice versa—to break up your frame and visually create more shape.
4️⃣ Pear (Triangle):
- Tops: Add volume and brightness—go for textured knits, bold colors, stripes, or any detail that draws attention upward.
- Bottoms: Choose sleek silhouettes in darker tones—black skinnies, faux leather leggings, and solid midi skirts are perfect.
- Dresses: Stick to A-line or fit-and-flare shapes that cinch at the waist and flow over the hips.
- Layering: Cropped moto jackets or belted blazers help balance out proportions and highlight your waist.
🎨 Color Strategy: Keep the top half bold and bright—use color, print, or shine. Keep bottoms simple and dark for a balanced look.
5️⃣ Hourglass:
- Tops: Fitted and waist-hugging styles are key—wrap tops, structured knits, and tucked-in tees work best.
- Bottoms: Choose high-waisted styles that show off your waist—skinny jeans, skirts, or leggings are all fair game.
- Dresses: Look for wrap dresses or styles that follow your natural shape.
- Layering: Belted coats, tailored blazers, and cropped jackets will complement your curves.
🎨 Color Strategy: You can wear color anywhere—just keep it balanced. Match the intensity of color or print on top and bottom to maintain proportion.

Outfit Ideas With Each Fall Capsule Wardrobe Piece:
Let’s talk outfits! Below you’ll find easy, real-life ways to style every single piece in this fall capsule wardrobe. These aren’t Pinterest-perfect, one-time-only outfits—you’ll actually wear these on repeat.
I’ve included styling tips, layering ideas, and personal notes based on how I’ve worn these pieces over the years (yep, some of the photos are from way back!).
Use this section to get inspired, make your pieces work harder for you, and build a wardrobe you love wearing.
(3) Casual/Everyday Sweaters (your pick!)
These are your go-to fall staples. Whether you love crewnecks, V-necks, or turtlenecks—pick three that feel good and work with your bottoms. A striped turtleneck is a classic if you want something fun!
Style them with jeans, skirts, or layered over a dress. They also work great under jackets, vests, or cardigans—super easy to dress up or down.

(1) Going-out top or dressy sweater:
This one’s optional—depending on how often you go out. You can choose a nicer sweater with a fun detail or a simple top you can dress up with accessories.
Honestly, I’ve often just worn a regular sweater with bold earrings or a red lip and called it a night!
👉🏻 Cashmere sweaters are a great option, and these ones are gorgeous and affordable!
(2) Long sleeve T-shirts:
These are your base layers for fall—great under sweaters, flannels, vests, or jackets. Stick to neutral colors like white, black, grey, green or stripes so they mix easily with the rest of your capsule.
Go for a slightly fitted style so they layer smoothly, and look for soft, breathable fabrics you’ll actually want to wear on repeat.
You’ll wear these on their own, but also layered with your layering pieces like jackets, puffer vest and long cardigans. So make sure they match those pieces!
(1) Flannel/Fleece Shirt:
One is truly all you need! Choose a flannel or fleece in a print that matches your long sleeve tees, jeans, or even your puffer vest.
You’ll wear it open over a tee, layered under long cardigans or jackets, or even tied around your waist. It’s a fun way to add color or pattern to neutral outfits, so pick something that plays well with the rest of your capsule.

(2) Long Cardigans:
These are fall layering MVPs. Wear them over tees, sweaters, or dresses for extra warmth and texture.
Stick to neutrals, but feel free to add one with a fun print (like animal print) if the rest of your capsule is simple. Make sure they pair well with your jeans, leggings, and even your flannel. Long cardigans will be on heavy rotation!
(1) Leather or Suede Jacket:
A leather or a suede jacket are fall staples you’ll wear for years. Black or beige are both great options—just make sure it works with the rest of your capsule (especially your sweaters and skirts).
Throw it over jeans, dresses, or even your flannel—it instantly makes any outfit feel cooler.
(1) Puffer Vest:
You really only need one! Puffer vests are perfect for layering over long sleeve tees, sweaters, or your flannel shirt—so pick a color that ties in with those pieces.
They add warmth without bulk and instantly make casual outfits feel more put-together.
👉🏻 Browse some cute puffer vests that won’t break the bank, here.

(1) Coat or Trench:
Choose this piece based on your local weather. If fall is short where you live, go for a lightweight winter coat instead. Black, camel, or olive will work with most of your fall capsule—but this is also a great spot to add a bold color if everything else is neutral.
Just make sure it layers well over your sweaters and cardigans!
(1) Classic Blazer:
A blazer is one of those fall capsule wardrobe essentials that instantly elevates any look. If you want to add a printed piece to your capsule wardrobe for fall, this is a great spot—think plaid, subtle florals, or even a fun animal print.
Prefer neutrals? Go with black, beige, or olive. A boyfriend-style blazer is the most versatile and layers easily over tees or sweaters.

(1) Jeans or cords:
Choose the one that fits your style best—jeans or cords both work great for a fall capsule wardrobe.
Go for a darker wash or color so they pair easily with your sweaters, flannel, and boots. If you’re not a big denim fan (like me!), corduroy pants are a comfy and stylish alternative you’ll actually reach for.
Also remember that you will have other pants from your other seasonal capsule wardrobes. So no need to go crazy here!
(1) Black Jeans:
A must-have in any capsule wardrobe for fall—black jeans go with literally everything.
I used to swear by skinny jeans, but lately I’ve found that wide-leg or straight-leg styles are way more flattering on me.
Pick the cut that makes you feel great and make sure they work with most of your fall shoes. (remember you can scroll to the top of this article and learn the styling tips for your specific body type)
(1) Midi Skirt:
Midi skirts are perfect for a fall capsule wardrobe—they’re easy to style with sweaters, boots, and even tights when it gets colder.
I used the same one for spring, summer and fall, so this piece is totally optional if you already have one that works. Choose a print or color that matches your layering pieces for more outfit flexibility. Bonus points if your midi skirt works with tights and booties!

(1) Leather Skirt:
A leather skirt adds just the right amount of edge to your capsule wardrobe for fall.
Whether you go for a mini or midi, you’ll be able to style it with tights and booties and with your white leather sneakers! It’s perfect for dressing up or down—and super versatile for both casual looks and nights out.

(1) Maxi Skirt:
A maxi skirt is a great piece to add a little drama and movement to your fall capsule wardrobe.
Look for one in a flowy fabric that won’t feel bulky when layered. It’s especially handy for transitional weather—light enough for warmer fall days, but easy to wear with ankle boots and a long cardigan when temps drop

(1) Spanx Leggings:
These are a staple in my fall capsule wardrobe—comfortable, flattering, and more versatile than you’d think. I personally love the Spanx ones. I’ve had them for about 7 years! (the same ones!)
Wear them casually with a long cardigan or flannel, or dress them up with a blazer and booties. They also work great under sweater dresses or oversized knits for extra warmth.

If you are buying these, make sure to read my Spanx leggings Review first and don’t make the same mistakes I made. I also wrote ‘What to wear with leather leggings‘ where I share even more outfit ideas and styling tips with faux leather leggings.
(1) Sweater Dress:
A sweater dress is a cozy go-to for fall. Look for one that’s soft, not too bulky, and easy to layer with jackets or vests.
You can wear it with booties, over leggings, or even belt it to add shape. Choose a neutral or light color to break up all the darker tones in your fall capsule wardrobe.
(1) Going Out Dress:
This one depends on your lifestyle. If you like having a dressier option, include something simple you can layer and wear in different ways.
But before buying anything new, check your closet! You might already have a dress from another season that works with tights, booties, and a jacket. With the right layers, it can easily earn a spot in your fall capsule wardrobe.
(One) Pair of Casual Booties & (1) Pair of Dressier Booties:
Booties are a must in any fall capsule wardrobe—and having two pairs gives you options for both everyday outfits and going-out looks.
For casual wear, go with a neutral color like taupe, brown, or beige that works with jeans, leggings, and skirts. For your dressier pair, choose black or dark leather and a slightly higher heel.
Just make sure each pair serves a different purpose so you’re not doubling up!

(1) Pair of Rain Boots:
Rain boots aren’t the most stylish piece in your fall capsule wardrobe, but they’re definitely one of the most practical.
I recommend Hunter boots. They hold up for years and can be worn in fall, winter, and spring. Just add cozy socks, and you’re ready for any rainy (or slushy) day.
Get them in a fun color! It will make rainy/snowy days much brighter!
(1) Pair of White Leather Sneakers:
White leather sneakers are a year-round staple and a great addition to your fall capsule wardrobe.
They’re comfy, easy to clean, and go with everything from jeans to skirts to sweater dresses. If you already have a pair from your summer capsule, no need to swap them—just keep styling them with your fall layers.

How to Choose the Right Pieces for Your Capsule Wardrobe for Fall 🍂
Before you add anything new to your cart, take a moment to think about your lifestyle, personal style, and what you already own. The goal of a capsule wardrobe for fall isn’t to start from scratch—it’s to create a closet that works with you, not against you.
✅ Start by shopping your own closet
Try things on. Mix and match. Dig through the back of your wardrobe—you might already own more fall wardrobe basics than you think. That classic sweater or old pair of trousers? With a little styling, they might become your new go-to’s.
✨ Pro tip: This is the perfect time for a quick closet clean-out. Donate what doesn’t fit, feels outdated, or you just don’t love. You’ll feel lighter, and it’ll be way easier to get dressed every morning.
✅ Be intentional when adding new pieces
- Stick mostly to neutrals (like black, white, tan, grey, olive, or navy)—they mix and match like a dream.
- If you’re adding prints, look for ones that include at least one neutral to make them more versatile.
- Choose variety within each category (ex: if you want 3 sweaters, go for different styles, fabrics, or colors).
- Don’t be afraid of a pop of color—1 or 2 bold pieces can bring your whole fall capsule wardrobe to life.
✅ Don’t forget accessories!
You don’t need a ton—just the right ones. A single necklace, go-to earrings, or a favorite hat can completely elevate your outfits and keep things feeling fresh.
Building a minimalist fall wardrobe isn’t about restriction—it’s about intention. Make sure every piece has a purpose and feels good on you.
