I spent the entire month of October in Milan, with day trips all over northern Italy, and everything I wore came out of one carry-on. 🇮🇹
The weather was all over the place (55°F mornings, warm lunches in the 70s°F, and one rainy morning), so this list had to work hard.
So here’s exactly what to pack for northern Italy in October, adjusted to a realistic 2 week list. You’ll see the 22 outfits I actually wore and how many times I wore each piece.
I’ve been living out of a carry-on since 2021, but this is the first time I tracked every single outfit. 😅

🇮🇹 First, the Basics: My Month in Milan
Where
We were based in Milan and took lots of day trips around northern Italy, like Lake Como.
This post is about the clothes, not the itinerary, so I’ll keep this part short. 😉
How long
I spent the whole month of October with this list. For this post, I adjusted it to 2 weeks, so it works as a packing list for Italy in October on a more typical trip.
If you’re wondering how to pack for 2 weeks in a carry-on, this is it. I did laundry once, on just 3 pieces (more on that below).
Weather
It went from 55°F (13°C) mornings to days in the 70s°F (21 to 25°C). The second half of October was cooler, and the weather changed a lot, sometimes in the same day.
So what to pack for northern Italy in October really depends on your forecast. Please use this as a guide and check it a few days before you go, because it changes A LOT. 🌦️
Vibe and activities
Long lunches, aperitivo, museums, day trips by train, and a lot of walking on cobblestones.
Nothing fancy, but Milan is a stylish city, so you’ll want to look put together without trying too hard.
Trip style
Carry-on only, with a backpack as my personal item. On most days my husband and I shared one day backpack (he usually carries it), so my crossbody only held the essentials.
Why this matters
Northern Italy in the fall isn’t summer and it isn’t winter. You need pieces that work for a cold walk to the train AND a warm lunch outside.
That’s what makes what to pack for northern Italy in October tricky, and it’s why every piece on this list layers.
🎨 Find Your Fall Color Palette
The easiest way to pick colors that look good on you is your color season.
Took a color quiz? Find your season below.
If you haven’t, pick the row that looks most like the colors you already wear and love.
Spring (warm and light)
ivory, camel, warm beige, peach, coral, warm greenSummer (cool and soft)
soft white, heather grey, soft navy, dusty rose, mauve, slate blueAutumn (warm and deep)
cream, chocolate, olive, camel, rust, burgundyWinter (cool and deep)
black, pure white, charcoal, navy, berry, emerald💡 Know your exact season, like Soft Summer or Deep Autumn? Just use your main season’s colors.
This works for all your Europe fall outfits, not just this trip.
Then pick each piece of what to pack for northern Italy in October in a color from your row. Keep your bottoms in your darkest neutral, and they’ll go with every top 😉
🧳 What to Pack for Northern Italy in October: The 17 Pieces
I always start with bottoms, then pick tops that go with all of them. Here’s everything that came with me, with my sizes so you can compare.
Bottoms (4)
- Black cropped Ponte pants, size 2 with a 26″ (66 cm) inseam. They’re wide leg and could pass for fancy trousers.
- Burgundy silk skirt, size S. The dressiest piece on the list, and it packs down to almost nothing.
- Faded black studded jeans, size 26. I only wear them with a heel, so they always went with the booties.
- Athleta pants in botanical, petite 2. My casual pants for this trip, with an elastic waist.
Tops (7)
- White merino V-neck base layer from Unbound Merino, slim fit, size S. It tucks in with no bunching.
- Black cashmere tank, size S.
- Light pink cashmere tee, size S.
- Black bodysuit, size S.
- Striped cashmere crewneck, size S.
- Black shrunken cashmere sweater, size S. Great with high waisted bottoms and over dresses.
- Cream cashmere sweater from House of Bruar, size S. Heads up: it looks like a turtleneck on the website, but it’s not. The neck is a soft ruffle, and I still love it.
Dresses (2)
- Polka dot silk midi dress, size S. Mine is the strappy version, and there’s also a version with more coverage.
- Olive Spanx dress, size XS.
Layers (2)
- Beige trench coat, size XS. Water resistant, not waterproof.
- Long black cashmere cardigan, size S.
Shoes (2)
- Vessi Soho sneakers. Waterproof, white, and on my feet for half of my outfits.
- Black sock booties. The block heel makes them easy to walk in.
Accessories (not counted in the 17)
- Burgundy cashmere wrap
- Black and gold studded belt, size XS
- Dusty pink leather crossbody, the Quince Gemma I’ve carried for over 3 years
- Black Spanx tights, size S
- Merino cashmere socks
- Jewelry case
Others
- Level 8 Voyageur carry-on
- Quince puff commuter backpack in terracotta, my personal item
- Compression socks for the flight
- J.Crew pajamas
- Gym clothes: leggings, workout tops and On trail runners. They came too, but they’re not part of the 17. (If you don’t work out on vacation, that’s free space for souvenirs!)

👗 22 Milan Fall Outfits I Wore (Day and Night)
These are my Italy in October outfits, straight from my camera roll, so you can see exactly what to wear in northern Italy in October. 📸
I didn’t change for dinner every night, so some days have 1 outfit and some have 2.
Every outfit is a formula, so you can copy it with what to pack for northern Italy in October from your own closet.
Day 1: Travel Day in Athleta Pants and a Long Cashmere Cardigan
Formula: Athleta pants + black cashmere tank + long black cashmere cardigan + Vessi sneakers + burgundy cashmere wrap + dusty pink crossbody + compression socks
Phoenix to Paris to Milan, about 17 hours door to door. 😬 For a day that long, I wanted every piece working twice: on the plane, and again once we landed.
The black cashmere tank and long cardigan were my warm layers on the flight. In Italy they went right back into rotation.
That elastic waistband on the Athleta pants made a long flight so much easier. My Vessi sneakers got me through the walk between gates in Paris.
The wrap was my plane blanket, and it rode inside my backpack with the crossbody.
Compression socks go on before boarding and come off once you land. (Unless you’re flying business, don’t try putting them on mid flight 😅)
💡 Pro tip: the night before, pack your layers and crossbody inside your personal item and zip it. If everything fits, your hands stay free all day.

Day 2: A Long Lunch in a Silk Skirt and Pink Cashmere Tee
Formula: burgundy silk skirt + light pink cashmere tee + burgundy cashmere wrap + black sock booties + dusty pink crossbody
A warm 68°F (20°C) day in Milan, a 3 hour lunch outside, and a short stroll after.
The burgundy silk skirt looks dressed up and moves when you walk.
Soft pink and burgundy come from the same color family, so the tee looked good with the skirt without matching exactly.
The wrap is so cozy and perfect for those cool days when you don’t want to wear a jacket. I use it day and night, more as an extra layer than a scarf.
The black sock booties grounded the outfit, and the dusty pink crossbody brought the pink from the tee back in.
Day 3: Ponte Pants, the Cream Sweater and the Trench for a Day Trip
Formula: black cropped Ponte pants + cream cashmere sweater + beige trench + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
Day trips mean a train, a lot of walking, and no going back to change. So I went with my comfiest pants and my Vessi sneakers.
Cream and beige together look soft and polished, and the black pants keep it from looking washed out.
The ruffle on the cream sweater does the work a necklace would. 💛

Day 4: Polka Dots at Lake Como, Then Studded Jeans for Dinner
Daytime formula: polka dot silk midi dress + burgundy cashmere wrap + Vessi sneakers
Lake Como was in the 70s°F (21 to 25°C), so the polka dot dress came out. Super comfy all day!
White sneakers with a silk dress keep it relaxed enough to walk the gardens and the lakefront.
The wrap went over my shoulders when I wanted a little warmth, and came off when I didn’t.
Evening formula: faded black studded jeans + black bodysuit + black shrunken cashmere sweater + black sock booties + burgundy cashmere wrap + dusty pink crossbody
The shrunken sweater over a bodysuit is perfect with high waisted jeans. It shows your waist, and the bodysuit keeps everything smooth.
Black on black with the studs and gold jewelry looks dressed up for dinner. The wrap came with me but skipped the photo. 😅
Day 5: Athleta Pants and the Cream Sweater
Formula: Athleta pants + cream cashmere sweater + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
A full day of exploring, eating, and going in and out of museums.
Teal and cream are such a pretty mix, and it’s a nice break from all the black on this list.
I didn’t need the trench that day. The sweater was enough.
Day 6: The 20,000 Step Day in Ponte Pants, Stripes and the Trench
Formula: black cropped Ponte pants + striped cashmere crewneck + beige trench + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
We spent this day exploring and eating our way around Milan, and ended at about 20,000 steps.
On a day like that, I want an outfit I can forget about. The Ponte pants stretch with every step, and the Vessi sneakers kept my feet happy until the end.
The trench is the piece that makes it look put together. Beige and navy trench coats seemed to be everywhere in Milan in October, so this one fit right in.
Day 7: The Olive Spanx Dress With Sneakers
Formula: olive Spanx dress + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
On a warmer day, the Spanx dress went with sneakers and nothing else.
It’s the easiest outfit on this list. One piece, tie the waist, and go.
And that dusty pink crossbody looks so pretty against the olive. 🫒

Day 8: Ponte Pants and the Long Cardigan, Then a Silk Skirt for Dinner
Daytime formula: black cropped Ponte pants + white merino base layer + long black cashmere cardigan + studded belt + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
The white merino base layer isn’t only for layering. I wear it on its own too, and it tucks in with no bunching.
The studded belt is what makes a simple top look finished. Accessories do so much of the work on a short list like this.

Evening formula: burgundy silk skirt + black bodysuit + black tights + black sock booties + dusty pink crossbody
For dinner, the silk skirt got the bodysuit, black tights and booties.
With tights on, I didn’t even need the wrap.
Day 9: Polka Dots and the Cardigan for a Day Trip, Then the Spanx Dress for Dinner
Daytime formula: polka dot silk midi dress + long black cashmere cardigan + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
We left early for this day trip, and it was 55°F (13°C) on our 10 minute walk to the train. Even with the long cardigan, I was cold, but I did it on purpose.
The rest of the day was in the high 60s°F (19 to 20°C) and sunny. Wearing the dress meant I’d be comfy all day, not stacking layers I’d only need for 10 minutes.
💡 Pro tip: dress for most of the day, not the first 10 minutes. Being a little cold on the walk to the train beats carrying extra layers around all day.
Evening formula: olive Spanx dress + black tights + black sock booties + dusty pink crossbody
Same dress as Day 7, but with black tights and booties instead of sneakers, it looks like a totally different outfit.
This is the formula I’d copy for any nice fall dinner: a simple dress, tights and booties.
Day 10: The Layering Day, Then a Silk Skirt and Cream Sweater for Dinner
Daytime formula: black cropped Ponte pants + white merino base layer + black shrunken cashmere sweater + beige trench + studded belt + black sock booties + dusty pink crossbody
This day had a temperature swing of about 25°F (14°C), and I hate being cold. So I dressed in layers and took them off as the day warmed up.
The merino went first, then the shrunken sweater, then the trench. By the afternoon I was down to the merino and the belt.
This only works because we had the day backpack, so the layers had somewhere to go.
You don’t have to do it my way! You can also be a little cold in the morning and be fine by noon, or layer over a short sleeve top like my husband does.

Evening formula: burgundy silk skirt + cream cashmere sweater + black tights + black sock booties + burgundy cashmere wrap + dusty pink crossbody
The silk skirt and the cream sweater, with tights and booties. I wore it with and without the wrap, and both work.
Cream with burgundy is such a pretty fall combo. 🍂

Day 11: Athleta Pants and Stripes, Then the Aperitivo Look
Daytime formula: Athleta pants + striped cashmere crewneck + burgundy cashmere wrap + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
A long day around the city, in and out of museums.
This time the wrap became a scarf, which changes the whole look (and keeps your neck warm).
Teal, stripes and burgundy sound like a lot, but they work so well together. 😉

Evening formula: faded black studded jeans + black bodysuit + long black cashmere cardigan + black sock booties + dusty pink crossbody
My easy aperitivo combo was the bodysuit, jeans, cardigan and booties.
Nothing to think about, and it still looks put together.
Day 12: Ponte Pants and the Pink Tee, Then Polka Dots for a Museum and Dinner
Daytime formula: black cropped Ponte pants + light pink cashmere tee + burgundy cashmere wrap + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
A short sleeve cashmere tee under the wrap is perfect for those in between days, warm in the sun and cool in the shade.
Pink and burgundy again, this time with black pants instead of the silk skirt.

Evening formula: polka dot silk midi dress + black shrunken cashmere sweater + black tights + black sock booties + burgundy cashmere wrap + dusty pink crossbody
An afternoon of exploring, a museum, then dinner.
The shrunken sweater went over the polka dot dress, so it reads like a skirt and a sweater. With tights and booties, a summer dress works for fall.

Day 13: The Silk Skirt With the White Merino Top
Formula: burgundy silk skirt + white merino base layer + burgundy cashmere wrap + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
Silk skirt, merino top and sneakers. Comfy enough to walk all day, and it still looks dressed up.
I took the wrap instead of the trench, and it was all I needed.

Day 14: A Rainy Morning in Athleta Pants and the Shrunken Sweater
Formula: Athleta pants + black shrunken cashmere sweater + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
It only rained one day, for a few hours in the morning. We took it easy, got some work done, and went out in the afternoon.
No rain jacket for me (our Airbnb had umbrellas), but the waterproof sneakers came every day.
My straight leg Athleta hems never got wet. Meanwhile, I saw so many cute wide leg trousers soaked at the bottom. 🥲

Day 15: Silk Skirt and Stripes, Then Studded Jeans and the Cream Sweater
Daytime formula: burgundy silk skirt + striped cashmere crewneck + burgundy cashmere wrap + Vessi sneakers + dusty pink crossbody
A slow half day in the city with a long lunch, in gorgeous 60s°F (16 to 20°C) weather.
Stripes make the silk skirt casual enough for sneakers. I wore it with and without the wrap.

Evening formula: faded black studded jeans + cream cashmere sweater + black sock booties + burgundy cashmere wrap + dusty pink crossbody
The cream sweater with black jeans is so simple, and the studs and booties make it ready for dinner.
I carried the wrap instead of the cardigan, just in case.
✨ The Outfits I Didn’t Get to Wear (But Could Have)
These are 8 top and bottom pairs I never wore together, so that’s 8 brand new outfits from the same 17 pieces.
Switch the layer (the trench, the long cardigan or nothing) and the shoes (sneakers or booties), and you get 31 more. Change your accessories and the number keeps going. 😉
So if you’re still deciding what to pack for northern Italy in October, this is how far one small list can go.
- Athleta pants + light pink cashmere tee: no layer · trench · long cardigan
- Athleta pants + white merino base layer: no layer · trench · long cardigan
- black cropped Ponte pants + black cashmere tank: no layer · long cardigan
- black cropped Ponte pants + black bodysuit: no layer · trench · long cardigan
- burgundy silk skirt + black cashmere tank: no layer · trench · long cardigan
- burgundy silk skirt + black shrunken cashmere sweater: no layer · trench · long cardigan
- faded black studded jeans + black cashmere tank: no layer · trench
- faded black studded jeans + white merino base layer: no layer · trench · long cardigan
🥶 Why didn’t I wear the tank again? It was too cold for a tank for me, because I run cold.
My husband was in T-shirts midday a few days, so if you run warm, those tank outfits are for you!
🔁 How Many Times I Wore Each Piece (and Why It Made the List)
Here’s every top, bottom, dress and layer in these Milan outfits, with how many times I wore it. Shoes and accessories were as needed (or as desired 😉).
This is the part that tells you if what to pack for northern Italy in October is worth the space in your bag.
🧺 Laundry: everything I wore on the plane went in the wash on day 1. After that, I only washed the Athleta pants, the Ponte pants and the merino base layer once, and only because I was already washing our gym clothes.
Everything was air dried, and I didn’t sweat a drop.
Bottoms
Burgundy silk skirt: 5 times. It works with sneakers by day and tights at night.
It can wrinkle a little, but nothing too crazy. If wrinkles drive you crazy, a printed silk skirt hides them much better.
🎯 Also read: 35 ways to style a silk skirt for any occasion
Black cropped Ponte pants: 5 times (washed once). My most worn pants, for the longest walking days.
🎯 Also read: 40+ Ponte pants outfits that are comfy but put together
Athleta pants: 4 times (washed once). The straight leg kept the hems dry on the rainy day.
Faded black studded jeans: 3 times, always for dinner.
Tops
Black shrunken cashmere sweater: 4 times. On its own, over a bodysuit, over the merino, and over a dress.
Cream cashmere sweater: 4 times. It goes with every bottom on the list.
Black bodysuit: 3 times, always at night.
Striped cashmere crewneck: 3 times. The easiest way to make an outfit look casual.
White merino base layer: 3 times (washed once), as a base layer and on its own.
Light pink cashmere tee: 2 times, both with the wrap.
Black cashmere tank: 1 time, on the plane. Too cold for me after that!
Dresses
Polka dot silk midi dress: 3 times. With sneakers in the 70s°F, and with tights and a sweater on cooler nights.
Olive Spanx dress: 2 times. Sneakers by day, tights and booties at night.
Layers
Long black cashmere cardigan: 4 times. Not quite enough on a 55°F (13°C) morning for me, but perfect for the rest of the day.
Beige trench coat: 3 times. My only jacket, and it was all I needed in October.
Shoes and accessories (as needed)
Vessi sneakers: half of my outfits, every walking day, and the rainy one.
Sock booties: they did great for a full 12 hour day on cobblestones, but they’re not comfier than the sneakers. For the rest of the trip, they were for 4 hour sprints, like dinner.
Burgundy wrap: in half of my outfits, as a layer, a scarf, and a plane blanket.
Dusty pink crossbody: every single day. 💕

Hi, my name is Aimara and I am the voice behind Ways of Style. I was born and raised in Venezuela until the age of 27 when I moved to Chicago, and 2 years later I met my best friend and husband. We now travel full time and live out of a carry-on bag, so believe me, I know a thing or two about packing for a month in Italy with very little space.
I love creating new looks and looking cute while I’m traveling. My goal is to help you maximize every piece you have in your closet and to encourage you to live with less things.

Northern Italy in October FAQ
What to pack for northern Italy in October if you want to pack light?
Pack 4 bottoms, 7 tops, 2 dresses, 2 layers and 2 pairs of shoes. That’s 17 pieces, and it made 22 outfits for me in Milan. Keep your bottoms dark so everything mixes, and add a wrap or scarf for extra warmth. The same list works if you’re deciding what to pack for Italy in October anywhere up north.
What is the weather in northern Italy in October like?
On my trip it went from 55°F (13°C) mornings to days in the 70s°F (21 to 25°C). Milan weather in October got cooler in the second half of the month, and it changed a lot, sometimes in the same day. Check the forecast a few days before you go.
What to wear in Milan in October?
Think comfy but put together: Ponte pants or jeans, cashmere sweaters, a light layer, and white sneakers or sock booties. Milan is a stylish city, so a belt, a scarf or simple jewelry goes a long way.
How to pack for 2 weeks in a carry-on?
Start with bottoms, then pick tops that go with all of them. My formula is tops = trip days ÷ 1.5 and bottoms = trip days ÷ 2.5, and dresses count toward both. For 2 weeks that’s 7 tops, 4 bottoms and 2 dresses.
Can you wear sneakers in Milan?
Yes! I wore my white Vessi sneakers in half of my outfits, with pants, a silk skirt and dresses. Waterproof ones are worth it, since the weather changes so much.
Do you need a coat for northern Italy in the fall?
In October, a trench and a long cardigan were enough for me (and I run cold). By November you’ll want something warmer, like a lightweight puffer. Here’s how I layer for Italy in November.
Do you need to do laundry on a 2 week trip?
Not much. I only washed 3 pieces once, and everything air dried. Cashmere and merino can be worn several times between washes, especially when it’s not hot.
