The Viral Sudoku Packing Method Explained By A Full Time Traveler (Summer Edition)

in Travel Style on 04/21/26

There are so many ways to approach packing for a trip. Some people start with a list. Some pull everything out of their closet and edit down. And then there are actual systems designed to help you pack less and wear more.

The sudoku packing method for summer is one of them. You might know it as the 3x3x3 packing method. Same concept, better name.

It’s a simple 3×3 grid where you choose 9 pieces of clothing that all work together. Every single thing in your bag has a purpose and a partner. The result? 27 mix and match outfits from just 9 pieces.

So, in this post I’m breaking down:

✅ What the sudoku packing method for summer is

✅ How the grid works

✅ How to choose your 9 pieces in the right order

✅ And how to adapt it for trips up to a week

I’m also sharing a real example with 27 summer travel outfit formulas so you can see it all in action. Let’s get into it!

What Is the Sudoku Packing Method for Summer?

The sudoku packing method for summer is a wardrobe selection strategy based on a 3×3 grid. You choose 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 layering pieces. 9 items total.

Every single piece must work with every other piece in the grid. That cross compatibility is the whole point and it’s what separates this method from just throwing together a random summer packing list.

It gets its name from the actual puzzle because, just like in sudoku, the pieces interact with each other across rows and columns. Your grid has 3 columns and 3 rows. Each column is already a complete outfit: one top, one bottom, one layer.

You can wear column and row 1 as is, column 2 and row 2 as is, column 3 and row 3 as is. That’s 6 summer travel outfits right there.

TOPLAYERBOTTOM
BOTTOMTOPLAYER
LAYERBOTTOMTOP

But here’s where the 27 comes in. Because every piece is compatible with every other piece, you can swap any category across columns to create new mix and match outfits.

⭐️ The rule that makes this work: every piece must be compatible with every other piece both across its row AND down each column.

How Many Days Is the Sudoku Packing Method for Summer Good For?

The sudoku packing method for summer in its core 9-piece format is ideal for a 4-day trip.

With 27 mix and match outfits you have more than enough variety for a long weekend without repeating the same look twice. And because all 9 pieces work together, you’re never stuck with that one top that only goes with one specific bottom. Everything connects.

For trips up to one week, the sudoku packing method for summer still works beautifully. You just add a few specific pieces outside the grid. More on that in a minute.

🧳 Now Let Me Help You Fill That Grid!

You know the structure. Now you need the right pieces for YOUR trip.

Answer two quick questions about your destination and trip length and I’ll send you a customized spring or summer packing list so you know exactly what to pack for your upcoming trips.

No more guessing on quantities! Answer these two questions to get started ⬇️

The Easiest Way To Choose Your 9 Pieces

Most people start building their summer vacation packing list with tops. It feels natural because tops are fun to choose. But this is actually backwards and it’s one of the main reasons people overpack.

Here is the order that actually works when using the 3×3 packing method. (and any packing method)

1️⃣ Start with your bottoms

Bottoms set the tone for the entire wardrobe. The style of your shorts, pants, or skirts determines what shoes work, what tops pair well, and whether your overall look reads as casual, polished, or somewhere in between. Think of your bottoms as the main character. Everything else is the supporting cast.

There’s also a practical reason to start here: it’s so much harder to find bottoms that actually fit you just right. You can grab a cute top almost anywhere on the road. But finding shorts or a skirt that fits perfectly and flatters you? That’s a whole mission. Lock in your bottoms first and everything else follows naturally.

This is the foundation of how to pack light for summer without sacrificing style.

2️⃣ Then choose your layers

Layers come second because they need to work with all 3 of your bottoms AND they pull double or triple duty in your suitcase.

Your linen button down shirt works as a top, a light jacket, sun coverage, and a swim cover-up all in one. Your pashmina works as a scarf, a layer on cold planes, and an extra something when your outfit needs it.

Layers that only do one job don’t belong in a summer carry-on packing list.

3️⃣ Finally, pick your tops

Tops are the easiest part of the grid to fill because they are the most flexible.

By the time you get here, your bottoms and layers are already set, so your only job is to find 3 tops that work with all 3 bottoms + layers. This is the easiest part!

Simple tank tops in neutral or complementary colors do this effortlessly. If a top only works with one or two of your bottoms, it doesn’t make the grid. This is the key to creating true mix and match outfits rather than just packing pieces that sort of go together.

🎯 Accessories and shoes get added at the very end, once your 9 pieces are confirmed.

Both pairs of shoes must work with all 3 bottoms regardless of which column they came from. Same grid rule applies.

If a shoe only works with one or two of your bottoms, it stays home. This is one of the most important rules for packing light for summer vacations!

The Sudoku Packing Method for Summer in Action: My Grid

Here is the summer carry-on packing grid I put together: 9 pieces, 2 pairs of shoes, and 27 mix and match outfits.

Tops: Beige tank | White tank | Green tank

Bottoms: Beige shorts | Floral shorts | Floral midi skirt

Layers: Linen button down shirt | Linen jacket | Linen pashmina

Shoes: Casual sandals | Leather sandals

The Sudoku Packing Method Explained - For Summer Vacations

Outfit Formulas: 9 Pieces, 27 Summer Travel Outfits

I organized them by bottom pieces so you could visualize the 27 looks.

And yes, I know some of these combinations look repetitive and that’s totally fine! You’re not going to wear all 27 anyway. This is for a 4 to 5 day trip.

The whole point of the sudoku packing method for summer is to give you a system. A system where every piece works with every other piece, so that every single morning on your trip you can open your suitcase and put together an outfit without thinking about it twice.

That is the real secret to carry-on travel. Not packing less. Packing smarter.

Printed Summer Tops

  • Classy & timeless picks – J.Jill

Button Down Shirts

  • Classic linen style – Quince
  • Fun ones – Boden
  • No iron – Talbots

Shorts

  • Fun summer shorts – Boden
  • Shorts & skorts (all lengths) – Athleta
  • Gauze shorts – PACT

Linen Pants

  • Retreat linen pants – Athleta
  • Coastal collection (gauze) – PACT

Skirts

Linen Jackets

Linen Pashmina

A pashmina might seem like a cold weather thing but it is honestly one of the most useful items you can pack for summer vacation. I recommend a linen one.

It works as a scarf, a light layer on freezing planes and restaurants, a beach cover-up, and even a makeshift blanket on long travel days.

In your sudoku grid it counts as a layer, which means it has to work with all 3 of your bottoms.

🎯 If you want even more options, you can download my full summer shopping guide here! It’ll save you so much time.

How To Adapt the Sudoku Packing Method for Summer Trips Up to One Week

The core 9-piece grid covers you for 4 (even 5) days comfortably. For a full week of summer carry-on packing, you don’t need to rebuild the whole grid. You just add 4 specific pieces outside of it: 2 extra tops, 1 extra bottom, and 1 dress. That’s it! (not more shoes, ok? I see you 👀)

2 extra tops

Tops take up the least space and give you the most visual variety. Add 2 that work with all 3 of your bottoms and you’ve instantly multiplied your mix and match outfits without adding much to your bag at all.

1 extra bottom

A fourth bottom fills a different role from what’s already in your grid. Think a skirt if your grid is all shorts, or linen pants if you need something more polished for dinners or evenings out. It just needs to work with your 2 extra tops at minimum.

1 dress

A dress is a one and done outfit that lives completely outside the grid. It gives you a different silhouette and a break from mix and match thinking on a day when you just want to get dressed without overthinking it.

The sudoku packing method for summer is one of those strategies that sounds almost too simple until you actually sit down and try to build a grid.

That’s when you realize how much thought it requires upfront, and how much it saves you on the road. No more opening your suitcase every morning and feeling like you have nothing to wear. You built the grid. Everything goes with everything. Just pick a column and go.

Whether you’re heading somewhere for a long weekend or stretching it to a full week, I hope this helped you see exactly how to make the sudoku packing method for summer work for your next trip. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

XO,

Aimara

Yesterday we had a full day of exploring different Yesterday we had a full day of exploring different places and I needed different outfits but I didn’t have space to bring a whole new look. That’s when button down shirts + sneakers come handy!

In the morning we went to the beach to snorkel and in the afternoon we explored Mayan ruins and had drinks and dinner. I needed sun protection and sneakers because they don’t recommend to walk the ruins in sandals (uneven terrain). I was able to change the wet bathing suit at the beach restaurant and didn’! get sunburn! Win win!!

We definitely left a piece of our hearts there, but we also learned so much and we know we will be back many times! And it feels good to be with family this time of the year.

I know I didn’t do a good job at posting in here. Honestly, I thought it was going to be easier, but starting a new Instagram, blog and YouTube channel from scratch for @waysoftheworld_ took a lot more time than I ever thought it would! So now, I’ll try to share some of my favorite photos from this trip in here because it’s never too late 🙃

Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by h Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by how beautiful it is, all the different landscapes, the food, and above everything, the people ❤️

Looking back to a few weeks ago when I was really afraid of going on this trip, thinking about all the things that could go wrong, being a little upset with myself in a way for not wanting the traditional life path I always thought was my only choice; get married, buy a house, have kids, save money and travel when you retire. That’s not for me.

I’m very happy I followed my heart 💕 I wrote a letter to myself on the blog: “What’s the best that can happen if the worst happens?” You can check it out by clicking the link in my bio. I hope it inspires you to think about what YOU really want in your heart, make a plan and go after it (but be patient). I promise that if I did it, so can you.

You have everything it takes ❤️

I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂 I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂

Our days in beautiful Kas are almost over. I’m leaving a piece of my heart in this cute little town and we will definitely be back! Now it’s time to hop on a 6 hour bus to Pamukkale and see what that place is all about!

Honestly, the only reason we are going there is because of me. G is not too crazy about it, but I’ve seen it on Instagram so much that I wanted to see for myself what the buzz was all about. So I’ll keep you posted on what it actually is!

If you are interested in knowing more about Kas (and all the amazing places we are visiting) we share a lot more on @waysoftheworld_ 💞
We talk about useful tips, costs, best things we do, where we stay and so much more. I also update those stories daily! So I hope to see you there 🙃

I was brave 💙 This was the most amazing experienc I was brave 💙

This was the most amazing experience. I was SO nervous and anxious before but somehow I managed to push through and tried this very scary thing for the first time. And you know what I learned? That I loved it! I would do it again a million times! It wasn’t scary at all. It was all in my head and it wasn’t real. Also, they had the sweetest dog at the shop named Lucy that really help me not to think about it (swipe to see her 😍)

We didn’t do any crazy tricks like G did and it was a very peaceful flight. It’s up to you how you want to do it.

I can see why Ölüdeniz is one of the top places in the world to go paragliding. If you only want to do it once to cross it off your bucket list, this is the place you go to. We shared a post about with useful information in case you are interested. Link in bio + stories.

Would you do it? 🙃
