15 Common Airport Mistakes To Avoid! Advice From A Full-Time Traveler

in Travel Style on 02/02/25

Traveling can be an adventure, yet even small -but common airport mistakes- can add unwanted stress to your travel days. I’ve experienced my fair share of those rookie moments… Like packing my toiletries the wrong way or forgetting to have a travel adapter handy to charge my electronics 🙈 But I’ve learned that a few thoughtful adjustments before your trip can transform the entire airport experience.

Over time, as someone who travels full time, I’ve come to appreciate the little airport hacks that make the journey smoother and more enjoyable, especially for us women on the go.

In this post, I’m sharing 15 rookie mistakes to avoid at the airport to help you breeze through security, pack smarter, and start your awesome trip on a high note.

You’ll find practical travel day advice, that not only will save you time and energy but also make traveling feel more effortless and stylish. Let’s dive in and discover how to upgrade your travel routine so that every trip feels a little more like an adventure and a lot less like a hassle.

Ready to learn about the 15 common airport mistakes to avoid? Let’s do it!

Common Airport Mistake #1️⃣ – Not Organizing / Separating Sharp Items:

One of my early mistakes was packing all my sharp items spread all over my suitcase. I learned that packing razors, manicure or pedicure tools, and other sharp objects without knowing exactly where they were can lead to delays.

The TSA might ask you to open your bag, which is not fun when you’re in a rush. I now keep these items in a separate, easy-to-access pouch, just in case.

It will save you time and helps keep the security line moving!

⚠️ Pro tip: don’t bring a razor like this one in your carry-on ⬇️ it’s not allowed!

2️⃣ Another Common Airport Mistake Is Overpacking Toiletries:

Overpacking toiletries is a rookie mistake I’ve learned to dodge the hard way. I used to haul my entire bathroom in multiple bulky bags, convinced I’d need every lotion, exfoliant and serum out there.

But then I discovered that those toiletry bags don’t mix well with TSA’s liquid restrictions, and neither do I with the scramble of repacking at security. Now, I stick to travel-sized versions and only bring the absolute essentials, which keeps my bag light and my travel days way less hectic.

The top 3 items in my toiletry bag are: antioxidant balm – plumping cream – plumping serum

Plus, let’s be honest: lugging around a full-size bathroom cabinet isn’t exactly fun, especially when you could be using that extra space for cute souvenirs or an extra pair of shoes!

PS: Again, the razor in the picture is not allowed in your carry-on. I learned that the hard way!

3️⃣ Not Checking Airline Carry-On & Personal Items Policies Ahead Of Time:

Each airline has its own rules for carry-on sizes and weight limits. This is one of the most underestimated and common airport mistakes you can easily avoid by just checking your inbox!

I’ve had the unfortunate experience of arriving at the gate only to find out that my bag doesn’t meet the requirements. (budget airlines in Asia, I’m talking about you 👀)

To avoid any last-minute stress, always double-check your airline’s policies before you pack. It’s a small step that can save you a lot of hassle. (the rules are usually inside your confirmation email)

Common Airport Mistake #4️⃣: Wearing Uncomfortable Or Hard To Remove Shoes!

Trust me, I know how tempting those trendy new shoes can be. But at the airport, comfort and ease are key. This is a tried and tested airport hack: do not wear new shoes for the first time during your vacation. (test them out first)

Shoes that are hard to take off can slow you down during security checks. And don’t forget there can be a lot of walking during your travel days! Better be comfortable.

I usually opt for my favorite white leather sneakers or my trusty Birkenstocks. Both options are comfy and practical. Plus, I can run if I need to catch a gate! 😉

5️⃣ Not Bringing Socks If You’re Traveling With Sandals:

Speaking of Birkenstocks… If you love rocking sandals like Birkenstocks (and who doesn’t?), don’t forget to pack a pair of socks. It might seem minor, but not having socks can make you feel cold or uncomfortable, especially in chilly airport terminals.

I always keep an extra pair in my crossbody bag or backpack if I’m traveling with sandals.

Trust me, your feet will thank you! And you’ll thank me when you don’t have to walk barefoot through airport security 😅.

6️⃣ Common Airport Mistakes To Avoid: Not Wearing The Right Outfit!

This is a big one. I’ve learned that some outfits just aren’t cut out for travel. Avoid white denim (it stains easily), overly tight clothes, uncomfortable shoes, jumpsuits, shorts, or mini skirts.

Instead, choose comfortable options like joggers, slip-on shoes, a soft pashmina or denim jacket to add an extra layer if you tend to get cold.

I even have a few photos of my comfy airport outfits that I swear by:

7️⃣ Wearing Too Many Accessories Or Jewelry:

I love accessorizing as much as you probably do, but when it comes to airport security, less is more! Belts and excessive jewelry can slow you down. And this can also make you a target for extra screening.

I now opt for simple outfits with minimal accessories, and it makes the whole process a lot smoother! So even though you should 100% pack accessories, they have no place during your travel days.

Traveling Internationally? Read These Tips First! ✈️🌎

Traveling internationally is an adventure in itself, but it also comes with its own set of unique challenges. I’ve learned firsthand that even small missteps (like forgetting your travel adapter, overlooking transit visa requirements, or neglecting to purchase that essential VPN) can quickly turn an exciting journey into a stressful travel day.

With international airport mistakes, the devil is in the details. By sharing the common pitfalls I’ve encountered, I hope to help you navigate global travel with confidence and ease, so you can focus on enjoying every moment of your adventure.

Here are some mistakes I have learned to avoid:

8️⃣ Not Packing A Travel Adapter:

A travel adapter is an absolute game-changer for international adventures. I’ve learned the hard way that nothing throws off your travel day like landing in a new country only to find that your devices are completely dead and you have no way to charge them. Sure you can always buy an adapter at the airport, but they can be expensive and not always available.

A trusty adapter is like a magic key: it lets you plug into any outlet, no matter where you are, ensuring your phone, laptop, and other essentials are always charged and ready.

🎯 Here’s the link to a travel adapter with incredible reviews – mine has been great over the past 5 years, but it’s always sold-out!

9️⃣ Not Having All Your Important Documents Handy:

A crossbody bag is my best friend when I travel domestically and internationally. I keep my essentials like my passport/ID, wallet, and phone close by with easy access.

However, if you’re already traveling with a carry-on and a backpack, remember that most airlines only allow two items.

So make sure your crossbody bag can be stowed away easily when needed! I like to leave space inside my carry-on or backpack just in case I’m asked to put it away, because technically I’m breaking the rules.

1️⃣0️⃣ Not Having Some Cash On Hand:

When you’re on an international layover, having some cash—especially in USD or EUR—can be a total lifesaver. Sometimes, the local currency might be hard to come by or the airport kiosks might only accept certain currencies and NOT credit cards.

In these moments, a stash of USD/EUR gives you the flexibility to exchange it for local cash when you need it most, whether it’s for a quick snack or even an unexpected fee.

It’s like having a little backup plan tucked away, ensuring you’re never caught off guard. This is a simple tip that makes international travel a bit smoother, giving you peace of mind as you navigate different currencies and exchange rates.

Do You Want Me To Help You Pack?

Sending you a free customized packing list is the closest it gets for me to pack for you! I’ll tell you exactly what to pack depending on the length of your trip.

Simply answer the 2 questions below and check your inbox after:

1️⃣1️⃣ Not Checking For Transit Visas:

Not checking transit visa requirements can quickly turn an international layover into a stressful experience. Even though transit visas are rare for many destinations, missing this small detail can lead to major complications—think long delays, extra fees, or even missing your connecting flight.

Taking just a few minutes to verify whether you need a transit visa can save you from a travel day nightmare. It’s one of those simple steps that ensures your journey remains smooth and worry-free!

1️⃣2️⃣ Not Carrying A Pen:

Yes, a pen! I know it sounds old school, but many countries still use paper immigration forms that need filling out by hand.

A pen is one of those small, essential travel items that can make a big difference. Without one, you’re suddenly scrambling to borrow it from someone or find a vendor, and in the midst of busy airport chaos, that extra hassle can feel like a real setback.

You’ll regret not bringing one if the immigration lines are super long!

1️⃣3️⃣ Not Packing Charging Cables:

In today’s digital world, we rely on our electronics more than ever. Whether it’s your phone, laptop, or headphones, I make sure to pack all the necessary charging cables.

Running out of battery in the middle of a long layover is the worst, so double-check your charging needs before you leave home.

1️⃣4️⃣ Common Airport Mistakes To Avoid: Not Having An E-Sim!

Airport WiFi is notoriously unreliable and very insecure (more on that below).

I’ve found that having an E-Sim, like Hola Fly, can be a game-changer. It keeps me connected without relying on sketchy public networks. It’s a traveler’s must-have! ✅

You can always purchase it before your trip and activate it when you land with just the click of a button. It’s been truly a game-changer for us!

👉🏻 Check out if HolaFly operates wherever you’re traveling to – and use code WAYSOFTHEWORLD to get 5% off your first purchase.

1️⃣5️⃣ Not Using A VPN When Connecting To Public Wifi:

Using public wifi without a VPN is like leaving your digital front door wide open to hackers.

I always make it a point to connect through a VPN—my go-to for over 5 years has been Surfshark—especially when I’m on the move.

Public networks are notorious for being hacker hotspots, and a VPN encrypts your data, keeping your personal info safe from prying eyes. It’s such a simple step, but trust me, it makes a huge difference in keeping your online activity secure.

It’s so affordable too! Check out Surfshark VPN here.

Final Thoughts About The 15 Most Common Airport Mistakes:

As you wrap up your journey through these 15 travel day tips, remember that every traveler has, at one time or another, stumbled over at least one of these common airport mistakes.

I’ve learned firsthand how even a tiny oversight can cascade into a major hassle, but I’ve also discovered that each misstep is simply a stepping stone towards smarter, more confident travel. That’s why I’m sharing this article with the world.

By embracing these lessons, from packing only what you truly need to ensuring you’re prepped for international layovers, you not only avoid the stress but also create a more joyful, memorable travel experience.

So next time you’re headed to the airport, take a deep breath and relax. You’ve got this now 💪🏼

Safe travels, and here’s to many smoother travel days ahead!

Aimara

In the morning we went to the beach to snorkel and in the afternoon we explored Mayan ruins and had drinks and dinner. I needed sun protection and sneakers because they don’t recommend to walk the ruins in sandals (uneven terrain). I was able to change the wet bathing suit at the beach restaurant and didn’! get sunburn! Win win!!

So now, I’ll try to share some of my favorite photos from this trip in here because it’s never too late 🙃

Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by h Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by how beautiful it is, all the different landscapes, the food, and above everything, the people ❤️

Looking back to a few weeks ago when I was really afraid of going on this trip, thinking about all the things that could go wrong, being a little upset with myself in a way for not wanting the traditional life path I always thought was my only choice; get married, buy a house, have kids, save money and travel when you retire. That’s not for me.

I’m very happy I followed my heart 💕 I wrote a letter to myself on the blog: “What’s the best that can happen if the worst happens?” You can check it out by clicking the link in my bio. I hope it inspires you to think about what YOU really want in your heart, make a plan and go after it (but be patient). I promise that if I did it, so can you.

You have everything it takes ❤️

I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂

Our days in beautiful Kas are almost over. I’m leaving a piece of my heart in this cute little town and we will definitely be back! Now it’s time to hop on a 6 hour bus to Pamukkale and see what that place is all about!

Honestly, the only reason we are going there is because of me. G is not too crazy about it, but I’ve seen it on Instagram so much that I wanted to see for myself what the buzz was all about. So I’ll keep you posted on what it actually is!

If you are interested in knowing more about Kas (and all the amazing places we are visiting) we share a lot more on @waysoftheworld_ 💞
We talk about useful tips, costs, best things we do, where we stay and so much more. I also update those stories daily! So I hope to see you there 🙃

Until next time friends 👋🏻

I was brave 💙 This was the most amazing experi I was brave 💙

This was the most amazing experience. I was SO nervous and anxious before but somehow I managed to push through and tried this very scary thing for the first time. And you know what I learned? That I loved it! I would do it again a million times! It wasn’t scary at all. It was all in my head and it wasn’t real. Also, they had the sweetest dog at the shop named Lucy that really help me not to think about it (swipe to see her 😍)

We didn’t do any crazy tricks like G did and it was a very peaceful flight. It’s up to you how you want to do it.

I can see why Ölüdeniz is one of the top places in the world to go paragliding. If you only want to do it once to cross it off your bucket list, this is the place you go to. We shared a post about with useful information in case you are interested. Link in bio + stories.

Would you do it? 🙃
