I got these Spanx leggings last Fall and they were almost $100. I have never spent that amount of money on a pair of leggings, but so far they have been 100% worth it (I wrote a complete review with more info here). At first, I had no idea what to wear with leather leggings. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to style them in many ways or wear them that often, but surprisingly, they have replaced my black skinny jeans. I am very happy with my leather leggings after all this time :)
After wearing them all Fall and Winter, I decided to challenge myself and style them for Spring too, because why not? I do like to maximize everything I have in my closet! I really do. Today I’m going to show you what to wear with leather leggings and I hope you feel inspired to recreate some of these looks with things you already have in your closet.
It is my main goal to help you achieve exactly that. Why buy high quality pieces to only wear them once in a while you know? If you learn how to get creative with the things you already have you will be able to create your own looks and over time you won’t feel the need to buy many things. By consuming less, you will help the planet and also save money for things that actually matter. I promise you will be a lot happier with less.

Why invest in faux leather leggings?
Faux leather leggings are a great investment piece to always have in your closet. They are part of my Fall capsule wardrobe (blog post that I’m currently working on) and I also wear them a lot in Spring and believe it or not, during Winter too. The only time of the year I don’t wear my Spanx leggings is Summer (unless maybe for an airport day), because well, I want to show my legs!
If you decide to invest in Spanxs, then it’s very important that you become a master in what to wear with leather leggings, play with the outfit formulas I’m about to share with you and make it a point to wear them as often as possible. This way you make sure you are maximizing every piece you have in your closet.

How many leather leggings do you need in your closet?
You only need one pair. Trust me, you will survive! I have been living out of a suitcase for the past 8 months and I’ve been just fine with the one pair. My advice is for you to check their website and pick a color that you can style in many different ways and that will work well with most things that you have in your closet.
If you are tempted to get more than one, be strong! I know there are a lot of cute options, but really just one pair is fine. Start with one, challenge yourself to style it often and differently (hope I inspire you to do that) and see how you feel. Think that you can save that money for traveling or for a nice dinner with someone you love.
Also, I want to make something very clear. If you already have leggings you are happy with, you can totally recreate any of these looks. And if you don’t like leggings, you can also recreate these looks with black skinny jeans.
What to wear with leather leggings
These are the 10 faux leather leggings outfits I created for today’s post. I incorporated pieces I usually wear for Spring and had my fun mix and matching them. I honestly didn’t think I was going to be creating 10 different looks and I’m sure you will think the same too when you look at your closet, but I’m sure you will be able to create even more leather leggings outfits! Check them out and tell me which one is your favorite :)
Best tops to wear with leather leggings
Leather leggings work great with T-shirts, button down shirts and long, cozy sweaters or hoodies. My favorite way is to pair them with T-shirts and add a layering piece like a jacket or a lightweight trench.
If you take a look at the photo above, you’ll see that out of the 10 outfits, I’m wearing a white T-shirt in 6 of them! And this wasn’t on purpose, it’s just my style. I obviously think a white t-shirt is a closet staple, but if you don’t have a white one, feel free to replace it with any other color or even a striped one. Also, I don’t know if a long cardigan counts as a top, but if you pair those with a T-shirt and your leather leggings it will look amazing. Then just play with the shoes and accessories and you’ll have different looks with just a few basic pieces.
How to wear leather leather leggings – What shoes to wear?
I wear almost any pair of shoes, but there’s one style I stay away from: flat/casual sandals.
I don’t know why but I don’t like how they look like with flat sandals or slip-ons as you can see from all my looks. I gravitate towards sneakers, high heels, booties and even my Hunter boots.
How to recreate any of these looks with things you already have in your closet
I’ve been writing a lot about these ‘outfit formulas’ on previous blog posts, so I’m just going to share it again here again, in case you haven’t seen the other posts. You can recreate these looks or similar ones with things you already have in your closet. My goal here is just to inspire you and make each look your own. Add your personal touch to each one of them.
Here’s how you can create your own looks:
- Pick one of the outfit formulas below to follow.
- Take out similar pieces out of your closet and separate them in piles (all the jackets options together, all the t-shirt options together, all the shoes options together, etc).
- In this case the ‘Hero piece’ are the Spanx leggings, so try to pick a pair of black leggings and create your own looks around them. (Remember you can use any leggings you have, or even black skinny jeans if leggings are not your thing!)
- Start mixing! Follow the formula. That’s really it!
- Take some photos for future reference. That way you won’t have to think about it too much in the future.
Ok, so without further ado…
What to wear with leather leggings – 10 updated looks for 2021
Look 1: Spanx Leggings with a little black dress
This is an all black look with nude sandals. It should be super easy to recreate because these are all basic pieces. What I want you to remember with this look, is that you can style your leather leggings with a dress too. It doesn’t have to be a black dress, it can be any dress you have in your closet, just make sure the length is around your mid thigh. I wouldn’t wear it with a dress longer than that. This is a great date night look.
This is a good outfit formula to start with if you are in an outfit rut and don’t know what to wear with leather leggings. Also, don’t forget about the accessories. Add earrings, a belt, a hat, or a necklace or whatever fits your style the best. Make this look your own!!

Look 2: Leather leggings with a button down shirt
This is a casual but cute look for the weekends or to run some quick errands. I love to mix a dressier piece like a button down shirt with my leather leggings. I added the faux leather moto jacket because I like how it looks with the Spanxs. Moto jackets look really cute with Spanx leggings!
You can use any sneakers or button down shirt you have. That’s why I’m not super specific with the outfit formulas. This is just top inspire you to add your special touch and make your own version of any of these looks. Any color you have will work.

Look 3: Spanx leggings with booties
I think this is one of my favorite looks! Another example of mixing casual and dressier pieces together. You can wear a casual jacket with a white t-shirt and pair them with booties and a beanie for an edgier look. This look is great for Spring and Fall. You can use any booties you have. I’ve also tried my beige booties and it looks great too.
Notice how in most of my looks I’m wearing a white t-shirt. As I mentioned earlier, T-shirts are my go-to pieces to wear with Spanx leggings because I can layer them with pretty much anything and you can dress them up or down.

This is another casual look perfect for a Spring rainy day. Remember that you can layer your sweaters with a puffer vest. Instead of a hoodie you can also recreate this look with a flannel shirt. Just an idea ;)
Also remember that you can mix and match any of these looks, change the shoes, wear different layers, ETC. For example you could wear your hunter boots with a denim jacket and a white t-shirt. Adjust it to your needs, the weather, your personal style and what you have in your closet. Make it work for you!

Look 5: Spanx leather leggings with a denim jacket
Of course I had to include a look with a denim jacket. If you know you know. Adding a printed scarf will add a pop of color. See how I keep wearing the same white t-shirt with a different jacket? Feel free to use a striped t-shirt too if that’s what you have. Also, if you don’t have shoes like mine, just wear white sneakers.
Remember to take photos when you are creating a bunch of outfits in one day. Try things on, or put all the pieces together and take like a flat lay photo. This way you’ll have plenty of looks ready to wear, especially on those days when you don’t have time or you feel like you have ‘nothing to wear’.

Look 6: Faux leather leggings with stripes
This is an all black look with stripes. These are all basic pieces that could be a part of your capsule wardrobe. You will have these in your closet forever and I promise they will never go out of style. This look also works with a denim jacket and different sneakers if that’s what you have in your closet. Pretty much any basic piece you have and put together with leather leggings will do the trick.
I love this outfit because I’m a huge fan of stripes and because it’s so comfy! Adding a moto jacket always makes you look extra stylish and I kind of feel like a badass too!

Look 7: Spanx leggings with a denim shirt
For this look I styled the leather leggings with a chambray shirt and Adidas sneakers. I’m wearing a white t-shirt underneath but you don’t have to. It was just a way to add an extra layer.
You can also leave the button down shirt open or tie it around your waist. Denim shirts are part of my Summer capsule wardrobe and I honestly wear them all year round. They are definitely a closet staple. Also, if you want to elevate a look like this one, add casual accessories like a cute beanie or a nice crossbody bag.

Look 8: Leather leggings for date night
This a great date night look! A little bit dressier. I paired it with my favorite lightweight trench and classic heels. This look is also cute to go out with girlfriends. Any color you have works here. I’m just wearing a white cami and added an extra layer, so just think about what you already have. Also, can we talk about how cute leather leggings look with scrappy sandals? Who knew!?
A lightweight trench is one of my favorite pieces I have in my closet. I don’t have a regular trench coat, so this is the one I wear the most during Spring. I like it because it’s not really a coat, so I don’t have to take it off at all when I sit down at a restaurant. Do you have one of these? Or do you stick with a traditional trench?

Look 9: Leather leggings with a puffer jacket
Definitely a cozier look for those colder Spring days. I paired the leggings with my pink combat boots, a lightweight puffer jacket and to make it extra cozy, I added a stripped scarf.
I love this look to run errands because it feels like I’m warm enough to walk around the city, but I also feel cute and well put together. I guess pink boots can do that for you!

Look 10: How to wear faux leather leggings with camo
Last but not least, another way you can style your leather leggings with a button down shirt. Have fun with it and make it a printed one. You can leave it open like I did here and layer it with a white t-shirt underneath. Sometimes it’s nice to use your button down shirts as an extra layering piece and not so much as a shirt, you know what I’m saying?

In Survivors’ Club, a Holocaust memoir, the author writes about his mother dressing in bright colors, wearing lipstick, etc. while their town was occupied by the Nazis.
