🍂 What is the 54321 Packing Method?
The 54321 packing method is one of my favorite travel packing hacks — and it’s especially helpful when you’re trying to build a minimalist fall packing list.
Here’s the basic idea:
- 5 tops (think long-sleeve basics, cute blouses, and yes — some sweaters count here!)
- 4 bottoms
- 3 layers (like a cardigan, vest, or lightweight jacket)
- 2 pairs of shoes
- 1 dress (or statement piece)
This method helps you build a simple travel capsule wardrobe where everything mixes and matches. It takes the guesswork out of packing and makes it easier to fit everything in a carry-on — without feeling like you’re sacrificing your style.
🛑 But here’s the thing:
The original 54321 method was made with summer in mind — it often includes 3 dresses, barely any layers, and sandals. Cute? Yes. Practical for fall? Not even close.
So I’ve reworked it for fall travel, where sweaters become your best friend and layering is a non-negotiable. Instead of 3 breezy dresses, we’re focusing on cozy knits and pieces that can handle crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and cool evenings — all in one trip.
This version is realistic, practical, and designed to help you pack light for fall travel without sacrificing warmth, comfort, or outfit options.
Let’s Start With The Tops! (5 Total)
Tops are the backbone of your minimalist fall packing list — they’re what you’ll wear most often so we want to get these right.
In this fall version of the 54321 packing method, the magic number is 5 — a thoughtful mix of base layers and cozy knits that work for the season, your travel plans, and your personal style.
Here’s how I break it down:
Links:
- (1) Mongolian cashmere tee
- (2) Long sleeve t-shirts
- (1) Cotton crewneck sweater
- (1) Striped cashmere crewneck sweater
1️⃣ One Short Sleeve Top:
This is your layering MVP — and for fall, nothing beats a cashmere t-shirt.
It’s soft, lightweight, and polished enough to wear on its own when the sun’s out, but cozy enough to layer under a cardigan or jacket when temps drop. Think of it as your elevated basic: comfy like a tee, chic like a sweater.
⭐️ Tip: Choose a neutral tone (like blush, ivory, or beige) that goes with all your bottoms. Cashmere adds a touch of luxury and practicality — it’s breathable, packs well, and feels amazing against your skin.
🏆 Personal recs: Nothing beats the price of Quince’s cashmere pieces! Here’s the link to the T-shirt in this packing list. You can browse more cashmere options here.
2️⃣ Two Long Sleeve T-Shirts:
These are your go-to everyday layers — classic, comfy, and ready for anything. A black long sleeve and a white long sleeve tee are as versatile as it gets.
You can wear them on their own, layer under sweaters or jackets, or even tuck them into wide-leg pants or your midi skirt for a polished, minimal look.
⭐️ Tip: Basics don’t have to be boring — when the fit is right and the fabric feels good, these simple pieces become your secret weapons (especially with the right accessories). Choose soft, breathable fabrics that hold their shape and pair with everything in your suitcase.
🏆 Personal recs: Cotton ones are usually fine, but if you’re heading somewhere very cold then merino wool will be the better option.
3️⃣ Two Sweaters:
This is where the cozy fall magic happens. A bold cotton crewneck and a classic striped cashmere sweater give you the perfect balance of comfort, personality, and polish.
The cotton sweater adds a fun pop of color and looks great with jeans, joggers, or your midi skirt. The striped cashmere one is your elevated neutral — lightweight, warm, and timeless. Both layer easily over your tees and under jackets or vests.
⭐️ Tip: Aim for sweaters that pack well and don’t take up too much space. Cotton works great for warmer fall days, while cashmere keeps you warm without the bulk.
🏆 Personal recs: Boden has beautiful sweaters that hold up really well. Quince is great for more affordable, high-quality pieces in classic styles.
J CREW always has tons of great classic styles too!
With these five tops, you’ll be able to layer like a pro, dress for any kind of fall weather, and build tons of cute fall travel outfits without overpacking.
Now Let’s Talk Bottoms! (4 Total)
This is where things start to get a little tricky — but don’t worry, I’ve got you 😉
In a minimalist fall packing list, your bottoms have to do a lot of heavy lifting. They need to be cute and comfortable, work with all your shoes, and most importantly? They need to match all five tops you’re bringing.
But once you nail this part, the rest of your fall travel wardrobe starts to come together beautifully. Here’s the mix I recommend for most autumn trips:
Links:
- (1) Stylish joggers (color: dark chambray)
- (1) Wide leg corduroy pants
- (1) A pair of jeans (dark wash)
- (1) A fun midi skirt
1️⃣ Stylish Joggers:
These are your travel-day lifesavers. Soft, comfy, and casual — but with a clean enough cut that you can style them with sneakers and a sweater for daytime exploring. Joggers are great for travel days!
🍂 Tip: Go for a neutral shade like black, olive, or tan that can be dressed up just enough when paired with the right top and accessories.
🏆 Personal recs: I personally love the ‘Destination joggers’ from Albion Fit and the Performance Tech Wide Leg Pants from Quince.
2️⃣ Corduroy Pants:
These add a touch of polish and variety to your autumn travel outfits — perfect for museum days, dinners out, or any moment when you want to look a little more elevated without trying too hard.
In this capsule, I chose a pair of corduroy wide-leg pants, which are cozy, seasonal, and easy to style.
🍂 Tip: Go for a structured but comfy fit, preferably high-waisted so it pairs easily with all your tops. Choose a neutral color like black, tan, or camel to make styling a breeze — and don’t forget to test how they feel sitting, walking, and moving around BEFORE your trip.
🏆 Personal recs: I have the exact ones I’m recommending in this packing list and they’re from Quince.
Also, if corduroy is too warm or not your thing, replace these with something that works for your destination — ponte, twill, or even a sleek wool-blend trouser.
3️⃣ Jeans:
No fall packing list is complete without denim. A great-fitting pair of jeans will take you from pumpkin patches to city strolls without missing a beat. I don’t think I’ve ever traveled with jeans, though. But I also chase summers everywhere around the world. So for this fall packing list I decided to include comfy jeans.
🍂 Tip: Choose a medium or dark wash and a style you actually love wearing — straight-leg or relaxed slim cuts usually work best for fall layering.
🏆 Personal recs: I love Quince’s jeans and of course Madewell. If you want something extra flattering, Spanx jeans are amazing for all us curvy ladies!
4️⃣ Midi Skirt:
A fun midi skirt is the unexpected hero of a fall capsule wardrobe. It adds movement, personality, and just the right amount of “I tried” energy — without actually trying that hard.
Midi skirts are great for fall because they offer coverage and warmth, but still feel light and stylish. They pair perfectly with sneakers or booties, and you can layer tights underneath if temps drop.
🍂 Tip: Choose a skirt with a bold print or rich fall color that works with your sweaters and long sleeve tops. Flowy fabrics like viscose or soft cotton blends are ideal — avoid anything too stiff or bulky.
🏆 Personal rec: Boden — They have the cutest printed midi skirts for fall in fun colors and wearable silhouettes. Perfect for adding a little joy to your travel wardrobe.
💡 Planning Tip: These four bottoms should mix and match with every top you pack — no exceptions. That’s the secret sauce behind a fall travel wardrobe that feels effortless and put-together (without overpacking).
Don’t Forget Your Layers! (3 Total)
Layers are everything when it comes to a smart fall travel wardrobe — especially when the forecast includes sunny afternoons, chilly mornings, and maybe even a surprise rainstorm.
This is the part of the minimalist fall packing list that keeps you warm without overstuffing your suitcase. And trust me: if you pick the right three pieces, you won’t need a bulky coat or a suitcase full of options.
Here’s the combo I recommend: (remember that this can vary a ton depending on temperatures and your destination)
Links:
- (1) Denim jacket
- (1) Puffer vest
- (1) Long cardigan
1️⃣ Denim Jacket:
A denim jacket is one of the most versatile pieces you can pack for fall. It adds instant style to any outfit, works with everything in your capsule, and gives just the right amount of warmth for mild autumn days.
It’s the kind of layer you’ll throw on for coffee runs, sightseeing, and casual dinners — and it’s perfect for balancing out cozy textures like sweaters or knit skirts.
🍂 Tip: Choose a slightly oversized or relaxed fit so you can comfortably layer it over a long sleeve tee and a sweater. If your destination runs chilly, replace this piece for a warmer jacket. However, don’t underestimate what a base layer, a sweater, a denim jacket and a pashmina can do!
🏆 Personal rec: You probably already have one of these. But if you’re on the hunt for a new one, this is the one I have. Madewell also has super cute ones!
2️⃣ Vest (Puffer or Knit)
A vest might sound optional, but for fall travel? It’s a game-changer. It adds warmth right where you need it — without restricting your arms or taking up precious packing space.
🍂 Tip: A slim-fit puffer vest is great for layering over your sweaters or long sleeves on cooler days. Prefer something dressier? Try a tailored knit vest you can also wear as a standalone top.
🏆 Personal recs: I love this one because it’s packable! It folds into nothing.
3️⃣ Long Cardigan (or Cardigan)
Your coziest essential. A good cardigan can be thrown over any of your tops and instantly makes you feel put-together — whether you’re heading out for coffee or bundling up for a chilly evening walk.
Choose a style that works with everything — jeans, joggers, even your midi skirt. A soft, midweight knit is ideal for layering without feeling bulky, and a long cardigan is great for extra warmth and coverage.
🍂 Tip: Look for natural or blended fabrics like merino wool, cotton, or cashmere for warmth and breathability. A structured knit gives a polished look, while a slouchier fit adds laid-back charm. Either length works — bonus points if it layers easily under your jacket and looks good with 2 or 3 of your tops.
🏆 Personal recs: I love Quince for their Mongolian cashmere cardigans (regular or long) are soft, classic, and budget-friendly. Boden is great for their beautiful merino and cotton-blend cardigans in fun fall colors and flattering cuts.
🧳 Pro Packing Tip: These three pieces give you tons of layering combinations to adapt to changing weather. They’re the secret to staying warm, stylish, and with a light suitcase.
Shoes (Pick 2 Based on Your Destination)
According to the 54321 packing method, you only get 2 pairs of shoes. I know… it’s tough. Shoes are bulky, and this method forces you to be super intentional with what you bring.
But just so we’re being honest here — I personally tend to travel with 3 pairs. So if you have a little wiggle room and one pair can pack flat (like loafers), go for it!
That said, this list is built around 2 solid options that cover the most ground — literally and stylistically.
Here are your 4 options — pick 2 based on where you’re going and what kind of weather you’ll face:
Links:
- White leather sneakers (or any color) [option 2 – option 3]
- Booties
- Rain boots
- Loafers
Here’s how to decide which ones make the cut:
1️⃣ Leather Sneakers:
A fall travel favorite. Comfy, stylish, and perfect for walking all day. They work with jeans, trousers, joggers — and even with your midi skirt.
🍂 Tip: Choose a sleek pair in white, taupe, or black that looks polished enough for restaurants and museums but comfy enough for cobblestone streets.
🏆 Personal recs: I love these ones (like, I’ve literally had them 3 times!), I traveled with these to Italy last fall and I have these ones too, which are great and budget friendly but they’re often sold out. So check here. If they’re available, snag them!
2️⃣ Booties:
Your go-to for chillier days, dressier outfits, and evening plans. A heeled or flat ankle boot instantly elevates any fall look.
🍂 Tip: Opt for a water-resistant pair if there’s any chance of rain. Black or brown work with almost everything in your suitcase.
🏆 Personal recs: VIVAIA booties are a traveler’s dream! Lightweight, water-repellent, and surprisingly comfy right out of the box. They’re made from recycled materials, pack down easily, and the neutral colors go with everything. Plus, they’re stylish enough for dinners out but practical enough for walking all day.
3️⃣ Rain Boots:
If your fall trip includes a high chance of rain or you’re heading somewhere like the Pacific Northwest or the UK, a sleek pair of rain boots can be a lifesaver.
🍂 Tip: Look for short, packable styles that are lightweight and easy to walk in. Bonus points if they double as everyday boots and match all your bottoms — black or dark olive are usually good options.
🏆 Personal recs: If where you’re heading will only have occasional rain, then you should be fine with VIVAIA’s water resistant booties. If you know for sure it’ll rain all the time, then you’ll want proper rain boots like these.
4️⃣ Loafers:
Chic, lightweight, and great for transitional weather. Loafers are ideal if your destination is cool but not freezing — and they add polish to jeans, wide-leg pants, dresses or skirts.
🍂 Tip: Choose a pair you’ve already broken in. Travel is not the time for fresh-out-of-the-box loafers (no matter how cute they are).
🏆 Personal recs: VIVAIA loafers are loved by many travelers — they’re super comfy, pack flat, and go with everything.
Just as an example of how tricky shoes are, last year I spent 11 weeks in Italy from October through December… and I packed sandals. Yep — sandals for fall. And guess what? I wore them a ton during the first 6 weeks because the weather was still warm and sunny.
So trust me when I say: the weather truly dictates everything. So keep reading and follow the tips below so you can pick the right pieces.
Last But Not Least: One Dress
Every great fall travel wardrobe needs that one piece you can throw on and feel instantly put together — and for this packing list, it’s a black dress.
Simple, chic, and endlessly versatile, a well-chosen black dress is the secret weapon of any minimalist fall packing list. The key? Make sure it’s easy to layer and works with both of your shoes.
✅ What to Look For:
- A midi or knee-length style (long enough for chilly weather, but not too bulky to layer)
- Fabric that’s comfy but elevated — think jersey knit, TENCEL, or even silk (like the one below)
- A neckline that layers well under your sweaters (or at least one of them – it will look like a skirt)
- Sleeves optional — just make sure it works with your jacket and cardigan
🎯 Here’s the link to the dress below – you can browse more black dresses here.
This Is How It All Works Together:
Now that you’ve seen each category broken down, let’s bring it all together.
Below, you’ll find a visual of how all the pieces in this minimalist fall packing list work together to create 30 outfits.
This is where the magic happens ✨
You’ll see just how many outfits you can make with only 15 core clothing pieces — and how versatile your fall travel wardrobe can actually be when everything mixes and matches.
There are 30 outfits here. That’s plenty for any kind of trip!
- 5 tops x 4 bottoms = 20 outfits
- Dress outfits (when layered with sweaters + layers) = 3 outfits
- Tops + bottoms + layering pieces = at least 7 outfits
This is why it’s important that all your tops match all your bottoms. Little things like being able to pair your sweaters and layers with your dress make a huge difference.
Here’s a breakdown of all the pieces from the visual — so you can see exactly why each one earned its spot in this fall travel capsule wardrobe:
- Mongolian Cashmere Tee – Great for layering or wearing solo on warmer fall days. Light, polished, and super versatile.
- Black Long Sleeve Tee and a…
- White Long Sleeve Tee – A clean, classic essential that pairs with everything — perfect for casual days or layering.
- Cotton Crewneck Sweater – A cozy pop of color that still works with all bottoms. Brings some personality into the capsule.
- Striped Cashmere Sweater – Adds visual interest and classic fall vibes. Layers well and mixes easily with solids and denim.
- Stylish Joggers – Comfy enough for long travel days, cute enough for exploring. Can be dressed up with the right tops. (Color in the picture is dark chambray)
- Corduroy Pants – Easy to style and adds a slightly more elevated option. Works for casual or nicer outings.
- Classic Jeans – A no-brainer for any fall trip. Go with a pair you love and can wear on repeat. Make sure they’re stretchy and comfortable.
- Fun Midi Skirt – Adds variety and movement to your outfits. Great with tights or layered with sweaters.
- Denim Jacket – Timeless and tough. The perfect casual outer layer that matches literally everything.
- Packable Puffer Vest – Your chillier-days MVP. Packs small, keeps your core warm, and layers over anything.
- Long Cardigan – Soft, cozy, and ideal for layering over tees or dresses. Adds warmth without bulk. This one’s great for travel days!
- Leather Sneakers (optional, pick 2 pairs of shoes) – Perfect for travel days and casual exploring. Comfy, clean, and stylish.
- Booties (optional, pick 2 pairs of shoes) – Fall staple. Weather-friendly and instantly upgrades your outfits.
- Rain Boots (optional, pick 2 pairs of shoes) – Perfect for wet weather. Lightweight, waterproof, and easy to walk in all day.
- Loafers (optional, pick 2 pairs of shoes) – Stylish and lightweight. Great for dressier outfits and warmer fall days.
- Black Slip Dress – The perfect chameleon piece. Layer it under a jacket or sweater, dress it up or down, and packs down super small.
💡 Reminder: I gave you 4 fall shoe options in the full post — sneakers, booties, loafers, and travel rain boots — but you only need to pick two based on your destination and weather.
Use this list is a base — you can always adapt it! If you’re traveling somewhere a little warmer during the day, consider swapping in or adding a couple of camis instead of a sweater or long sleeve top. You can still layer them with cardigans or jackets at night.
🧳 General Packing Tips – Choosing The Right Pieces for YOU:
Before you start pulling pieces from your closet, take a few minutes to get super clear on what your fall trip actually looks like.
Even with a minimalist fall packing list, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all. Here’s how to personalize it:
✅ Check the weather — but go deeper than just the highs and lows. Find out when those temperatures hit. Will mornings be chilly and afternoons warm? Will you be out late when it’s cooler, or back at your hotel by sunset? This helps you choose the right layers and base pieces for your daily rhythm.
✅ Look at your activities. Are you walking a lot? Going out for nice dinners? Taking photos outdoors? Think through each day of your trip so you’re not stuck with cute-but-impractical outfits (or vice versa). Comfort doesn’t have to mean sloppy — it just means being prepared.
✅ Consider how often you’re willing to re-wear things. If you’re okay repeating pieces (and you should be!), you don’t need as many “just in case” options. This is what makes the 54321 method so efficient. Remember you can create up to 30 outfits. That’s enough for up to 25 days. (if you wash a few pieces every 10 days or so)
✅ Stick to one general color palette. The easiest way to make sure everything mixes and matches is to limit your colors. Neutrals + one or two seasonal tones (like rust, olive, or camel) work beautifully for fall.
✅ Don’t forget laundry is an option. Even just one quick wash halfway through your trip makes a huge difference. Rewashing 3 tops and 2 bottoms gives you 6 extra outfit combos — without adding a single item to your suitcase. Game-changer.
🍁 Quick Note About This Fall Packing List. This packing guide is designed for mild fall destinations — think daytime temps between 55–70°F and lows that don’t dip below 40°F. Perfect for Europe in October, a weekend in the Northeast, or an early November getaway that’s crisp but not cold.
If you’re heading somewhere warmer (like California or the South) or colder (like Iceland or the mountains), you’ll want to tweak this list to fit your weather and your trip. I’ve got other seasonal guides coming soon to help with that too!
