What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

in Travel Style on 10/20/25

If you’re wondering what to pack for Mexico, I’ve got you covered. This exact list is what I used for a two-month trip split between Mérida (a vibrant colonial city) and Akumal (a smaller beach town on the other side of the Yucatan Peninsula)

It’s a packing list that works comfortably for a 9-day Mexico vacation, but it’s also enough for up to 2 months if you’re willing to do laundry. (I tried and tested this)

🏆 The best part? Everything fits into this 20″ carry-on suitcase. With just a few tops, four bottoms, and a dress, you can easily put together at least 15 travel outfits that work for both city exploring and beach days.

If you’re new to packing light, don’t worry. You can always add 2–3 extra tops, 1 more dress, and an extra pair of bottoms. You’ll still have plenty of suitcase space 😉

Here’s what you’ll get from this post:

✅ A complete carry-on packing list for Mexico (clothes, shoes & accessories)

✅ 15 travel outfits you can recreate for warm cities and beach days

✅ My best packing tips for Mexico so you stay cool, comfortable, and stylish in the heat

What to Expect in Mexico (from hot cities & Caribbean beaches)

Mexico is a big country with very different climates, so what to pack for Mexico really depends on where and when you’re going. You’ll find bustling colonial cities, laid-back beach towns, and even mountain regions with cooler nights. That’s why it’s so important to plan for the specific mix of destinations you’re visiting.

On this trip, we stayed in Mérida and Akumal in September and October. These months are still hot and humid, with warm Caribbean waters and almost daily rain showers (hurricane season runs June–November).

Here’s what you can generally expect through the year:

  • Winter (December–February): Warm and sunny along the coast (perfect beach weather), but cooler in higher-altitude cities like Mexico City or San Miguel de Allende.
  • Spring (March–May): Hot and dry in many regions. This is the hottest time of the year in several parts of the country.
  • Summer (June–August): Hot and humid in coastal areas, plus rainy season. Expect afternoon showers on an almost daily basis.
  • Fall (September–November): Still very warm and humid in the Yucatán and Caribbean coast, but less crowded. Inland cities remain hot, though evenings can be milder.

Mexico Carry-on Packing List (tried and tested)

*the clothes next to my shoes are for my travel day outfit (with the sneakers)

All my clothing and toiletries are on the left side of the suitcase – underwear, bras, miscellaneous on the right. I wore the sneakers for travel days and the 2 pair of sandals fit nicely but I didn’t put them inside so you could see the whole set up.

That little suitcase is not even close to being full – even after I packed an extra pair of sneakers and some gym clothes, but I left those out of this carry on packing list for Mexico, because let’s be honest, most people don’t sign up for the gym while on vacation (at least I don’t 😅).

And one last thing, I live on the road full time. Since I didn’t have a washer in Mexico, we dropped our clothes off at a wash-and-fold each week (called lavanderías). It was easy, affordable, and kept everything fresh.

Remember this packing list is more than enough for 9 days (easily!)

15 Mexico Travel Outfits from This Packing List:

When you’re figuring out what to pack for Mexico, the magic is in the mix-and-match.

Every single top in this packing list works with every bottom, and all the shoes go with everything too. That’s how you stretch a small carry-on into 15 easy looks without feeling like you’re repeating outfits.

If you’re not sure where to start, here’s my best tip: choose your bottoms first. Why? Because bottoms set the tone and they’re usually the hardest thing to get right when you’re packing.

We’ve all been there… tops are easy, but finding bottoms that actually fit well, feel comfortable in the heat, and still look cute? That takes more effort.

Think of it like building blocks:

  • Start with 4 bottoms 👉🏻 each gets worn 3 times
  • Add 7 tops that all mix and match 👉🏻 each gets worn 1.5 times (for dinner once, then the whole day the next day)
  • Sprinkle in 3 pairs of shoes that match with everything
  • Remember you’ll have a dress or jumpsuit. These are once-and-done outfits.

And just like that, you’ve got at least 28 (7 tops x 4 bottoms) Mexico travel outfits that feel polished, plus breezy beach looks that don’t require overpacking. The best part? You’ll actually wear everything you bring.

Let’s take a look at the 15 travel outfits I created for this trip!

🧳 Interested in a FREE customized packing list? 🧳

This post shows you exactly what to pack for Mexico, but maybe your next adventure looks a little different. Whether you’re heading somewhere cooler, planning a longer trip, or just want a list tailored to your destination, I’ve got you covered.

Just answer 2 quick questions about where you’re going and how long you’ll be there, and I’ll send you a customized packing list straight to your inbox.

It’s fast, it’s free, and it’ll take the stress out of packing ⬇️

Outfit #1 – Crop Top + Linen Pants + Sneakers + Straw Hat + Crossbody Bag + Pearl Jewelry

I wore this for exploring Mayan ruins, and honestly, it’s exactly what you’ll want for a full day outside. The straw hat keeps the sun off your face, the sneakers make long walks (and uneven steps) so much easier, and the lightweight fabrics won’t leave you overheated.

If you’re wondering what to pack for Mexico and plan on doing cultural or historical day trips, this is the kind of outfit that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and practicality.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #2 – Linen Gingham Top + Black Linen Pants + Flat Sandals + Crossbody Bag + Straw Hat + Pearl Jewelry

This look is basically all linen, which is exactly what you want when it’s super hot and humid.

Linen breathes, dries quickly, and keeps you comfortable even on the warmest days. The sandals make it easy to walk short distances, and the accessories (a straw hat, crossbody bag and simple pearl jewelry) take it from “basic” to “effortlessly chic.”

It’s a perfect reminder that when deciding what to pack for Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, light fabrics and the right accessories will make your outfits feel stylish without sacrificing comfort.

Outfit #3 – Black Scoop Neck Tank + Black Linen Pants + Reef Water Vista Sandals + Neutral Headband + Jewelry + Crossbody Bag

Even though it’s all black, this monochromatic look still feels fresh thanks to the lightweight linen pants.

Monochrome outfits are also super easy to pull together! They look intentional without much effort. The neutral headband keeps hair in place on humid days and adds a polished touch.

I finished it off with the Reef Water Vista sandals, which are perfect for walking around beach destinations in the Yucatan Peninsula when you want to be comfortable but still look put-together.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

If you’re unsure about what to wear in Mexico, a simple all-black outfit like this proves you don’t need bold colors to stay stylish!

Outfit #4 – Blue Floral Dress + Flat Leather Sandals + Pearl Accessories

This was hands down my favorite going-out outfit in Mexico. Linen dresses are the best for hot weather because they breathe and keep you feeling fresh, even on humid nights.

Another bonus? I didn’t even need a bra with this one. Comfortable and freeing!

I paired it with my white flat leather sandals for walking around Mérida, but a dress like this can also be styled a different way: try tying a linen shirt over it with a front knot. I didn’t pack a linen shirt this trip, but if you’re planning what to pack for Mexico, this is a smart piece to add for extra versatility.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit # 5 – White Tank + Wide-Leg Pants + Sneakers + Crossbody bag + Gold Jewelry

This is one of those outfits that just works when you’re walking around all day. The pants are light and breezy (perfect for the heat), and white comfy sneakers keep your feet happy when the day ends up being way longer than expected.

Add a couple of simple layered necklaces and suddenly a comfy sightseeing outfit feels a little more polished. That’s the beauty of these Mexico travel outfits, they can be practical and cute at the same time.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #6 – Striped Tee + Wide-Leg Pants + Sneakers + Headband + Crossbody Bag + Pearl Jewelry

I love how a striped tee makes everything look more playful, and the headband + earrings take it from “just casual” to “cute casual.”

Accessories like these are true Mexico travel essentials. They don’t take up any room in your bag, but they make you feel like you actually put effort into your look.

Honestly, this was one of my go-to combos when I wanted to look good without trying too hard.

Outfit #7 – Black Tank + Wide-Leg Pants + Sandals + Straw Hat + Gold Accessories + Crossbody Bag

This look is easy and relaxed, but the details are what make it feel more pulled together.

The straw hat keeps the sun off your face, the sandals are breezy for walking around colorful towns, and the little gold accessories add just the right amount of shine.

Jewelry is one of my favorite tricks when planning what to wear in Mexico (or anywhere else). It instantly makes even the simplest outfit feel like you’re ready for dinner or drinks.

This combo worked for sightseeing, grabbing lunch, and even sliding straight into an early evening out.

Outfit #8 – White High-Neck Tank + Wide-Leg Pants + Sandals + Pearl Jewelry + Raffia Crossbody Bag

This is the outfit I reach for when I want to look a little more polished but still stay comfortable in the heat.

The neckline makes it feel dressier than a regular tank, while the wide-leg pants keep it cool and breezy.

A crossbody bag is a must. Hands-free, secure, and easy for travel days.

That’s why I always recommend adding this kind of formula to your carry on packing list for Mexico. It’s versatile enough to wear multiple times without anyone noticing 😉

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #9 – White Crop Top + Pleated Midi Skirt + Sneakers + Crossbody Bag

This outfit feels crisp and modern but it’s still super comfortable.

The pleated skirt adds a nice pop of color and keeps you cool since it moves with the breeze, and the sneakers make it practical if you’re out all day.

I love this combo for walking around town when you want to look stylish without worrying about sore feet or sticky fabrics. It’s basically the perfect balance of cute and functional.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #10 – Striped Tank + Pleated Midi Skirt + Sneakers + Headband + Crossbody Bag

This version has a bit more personality. The stripes make it playful, and the headband with pearl earrings instantly gives it a polished touch.

Accessories are such an easy way to repeat a skirt without it feeling like the same outfit. You just swap in small details, and suddenly it looks fresh again.

This is one of those outfits that photographs really well too, so it’s a great option for days you know you’ll be taking lots of pictures.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #11 – Black Tank + Pleated Midi Skirt + Sandals + Crossbody Bag + Pearl Jewelry

This one feels a little more relaxed and breezy. The flat sandals make it easy to wear when you’re near the beach or want something lighter on your feet, and the matching headband pulls everything together.

It’s simple but chic. I wore this for casual evenings out when I didn’t feel like overthinking it. A pleated skirt is great for this because it’s comfortable but still has that “dressed-up without trying” vibe.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #12 – Red Linen Shorts + Linen Gingham Top + Reef Sandals

This look is perfect for those in-between moments at a beach destination. Think waterfront lunches, sunset drinks, or strolling around.

The red shorts add a fun pop of color, and the gingham top keeps it playful but still polished enough to wear out. The Reef sandals are a win here because they’re comfortable for walking but don’t feel too casual, so you can head straight from walking around all day to clinking glasses at happy hour.

What to Pack for Mexico: 9 Days, 15 Outfits, 1 Carry-on Packing List!

Outfit #13 – Red Linen Shorts + One-Piece Swimsuit + Straw Hat + Reef Sandals

One of my favorite tricks when packing for warm destinations is to use a one-piece swimsuit as a top. It saves space in your bag and doubles as an easy outfit when you throw on a pair of shorts. Here, the red linen shorts keep it light and breezy, and the straw hat adds the perfect beach-town vibe.

⭐️ My tip with one-piece suits: pick a style you’d actually wear with regular bottoms (not just at the pool).

A square neckline, halter, or something with fun straps can easily pass as a tank top. That way you’re not packing “just a swimsuit” — you’re packing something that works as part of your everyday looks too. It’s one of the easiest ways to stretch your wardrobe when traveling light.

Outfit #14 – One-Piece Bathing Suit + Beach Cover Up + Reef Water Vista

In Mexico, this combo is perfect for everything… beaches, snorkeling, cenotes, or just sitting at a beach bar.

The one-piece keeps you comfortable and ready for the water, the button-down cover-up is easy to slip on and off, and the Reef sandals are practical for both wet and dry ground.

If you’re figuring out what to pack for a beach vacation in Mexico, this outfit is exactly the kind of simple, no-fuss look you’ll be glad you brought. Easy, functional, and still cute.

Outfit #15 – Linen Pants + Striped Cami + Hat + Leather Sandals

This is one of those easy outfits that works just about anywhere in Mexico. The black-and-white stripes keep it modern and sharp without feeling fussy, while the hat is a must for long sunny days.

Paired with breezy linen pants and flat sandals, it’s polished enough for strolling through city streets but still relaxed for an afternoon near the beach. Simple pieces, but together they make you feel effortlessly stylish in the heat.

And that’s a wrap! 15 outfits from just a handful of pieces. Each look worked for both city and beach days, and more importantly, everything felt comfortable, lightweight, and easy to wear in Mexico’s heat.

👉🏻 Here’s the cool part: with 7 tops and 4 bottoms that all mix and match, you actually have up to 28 possible outfits. You won’t need that many for a one-week trip, but that kind of flexibility means you’ll never feel stuck, especially after doing a quick laundry day. It’s the easiest way to keep things fresh without overpacking.

At the end of the day, the secret isn’t bringing more clothes. It’s picking the right pieces that mix and match effortlessly so you can spend less time worrying about outfits and more time enjoying your trip.

Quick Recap Of The Pieces I Packed & Why:

Here’s a quick recap of everything you just saw styled in 15 different ways, and why each one earned a spot in my carry-on:

Bottoms:

  • Black Linen Pants – The ultimate base piece. Breathable, comfortable for city walking, and easy to dress up for dinner.
  • Red Linen Shorts – Lightweight, fun, and the pop of color you need for beach towns and casual afternoons.
  • Pleated Midi Skirt – Adds movement and color, while still being versatile enough to dress up or down.
  • Printed Wide-Leg Pants – Breezy, stylish, and proof that “statement” pieces can still be practical. (more wide leg pants here)

Dress:

  • Blue Floral Dress – A one-and-done outfit that kept me cool and worked for both daytime exploring and going out at night.

Tops:

  • Scoop Neck Tank – A reliable layering piece that works with everything.
  • Striped T-Shirt – Playful and casual, perfect for sightseeing all day.
  • White Crop Top – Light, breezy, and easy to style for beach towns.
  • Linen Gingham Top – Adds personality and looks good with every bottom.
  • White Going-Out Top – The piece you’ll want for nicer dinners or evenings out.
  • Striped Cami – Lightweight and fun; perfect for mixing with skirts or pants.

Shoes:

  • White Sneakers – Non-negotiable for long walking days, archeological sites, or exploring the city. Canvas is better than leather for hot climates.
  • White Flat Leather Sandals – Easy, versatile, and chic enough for day-to-night. (run 1/2 size small)
  • Reef Water Vista Sandals – Comfy, water-friendly, and made for beaches, cenotes, or anywhere you’ll get wet.

Extras:

  • White Button-Down Cover-Up – Simple and easy to throw on.
  • One-Piece Swimsuit – Perfect for beach days, snorkeling, or sitting at a beach bar.
  • Straw Hat – Sun protection and instant style points.
  • 3 Headbands – Humidity savers that also add polish to simple looks.
  • Jewelry – Tiny in your suitcase but instantly change the mood of an outfit. I pack everything inside this travel jewelry case.
  • PJs & Silk Robe – Lightweight comforts that make travel feel a little more like home.
  • Crossbody Bag – Hands free and stylish. Just one that works with every outfit is enough for both day and night.

If you’ve been stressing about what to pack for Mexico, I hope this shows you how little you actually need. With the right pieces, you’ll have more than enough outfit options for over a week long trip (or even longer if you do laundry).

The best part is that every item works hard, keeps you cool in the heat, and makes you feel good about what you’re wearing without weighing down your suitcase.

So, if you’re packing for Mexico start with these pieces, add your own personal touches, and enjoy your trip knowing you’ve got stylish, practical looks ready for every adventure.

Thanks for reading!

Aimara

In the morning we went to the beach to snorkel and in the afternoon we explored Mayan ruins and had drinks and dinner. I needed sun protection and sneakers because they don’t recommend to walk the ruins in sandals (uneven terrain). Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by h Turkey has been incredible. We are blown away by how beautiful it is, all the different landscapes, the food, and above everything, the people ❤️

Looking back to a few weeks ago when I was really afraid of going on this trip, thinking about all the things that could go wrong, being a little upset with myself in a way for not wanting the traditional life path I always thought was my only choice; get married, buy a house, have kids, save money and travel when you retire. That’s not for me.

I’m very happy I followed my heart 💕 I wrote a letter to myself on the blog: “What’s the best that can happen if the worst happens?” You can check it out by clicking the link in my bio. I hope it inspires you to think about what YOU really want in your heart, make a plan and go after it (but be patient). I promise that if I did it, so can you.

You have everything it takes ❤️

I basically only wear olive green and white now 😂

Our days in beautiful Kas are almost over. I’m leaving a piece of my heart in this cute little town and we will definitely be back! Now it’s time to hop on a 6 hour bus to Pamukkale and see what that place is all about!

Honestly, the only reason we are going there is because of me. G is not too crazy about it, but I’ve seen it on Instagram so much that I wanted to see for myself what the buzz was all about. So I’ll keep you posted on what it actually is!

If you are interested in knowing more about Kas (and all the amazing places we are visiting) we share a lot more on @waysoftheworld_ 💞

I was brave 💙 This was the most amazing experi I was brave 💙

This was the most amazing experience. I was SO nervous and anxious before but somehow I managed to push through and tried this very scary thing for the first time. And you know what I learned? That I loved it! I would do it again a million times! It wasn’t scary at all. It was all in my head and it wasn’t real. Also, they had the sweetest dog at the shop named Lucy that really help me not to think about it (swipe to see her 😍)

We didn’t do any crazy tricks like G did and it was a very peaceful flight. It’s up to you how you want to do it.

I can see why Ölüdeniz is one of the top places in the world to go paragliding. If you only want to do it once to cross it off your bucket list, this is the place you go to. We shared a post about with useful information in case you are interested. Link in bio + stories.
