*this post was updated to include a new natural deodorant called Type A.
Hi guys! I know this post has been long overdue, and I apologize, but things have been crazy with the moving, organizing, work, getting rid of stuff, etc.
I’m truly sorry, but better late than never, right?
I’m so excited to finally talk about natural deodorant!
Over the past 2 years, I’ve recommended a number of brands on my Instagram and I’ve also shared the ones I haven’t liked or have not work for me. Please keep in mind that this is going to be different for everyone. It depends on your hormones, PH, and a million other things. That’s why I also was so hesitant about sharing this blog post, but anyways, here you have it. Hope you find it useful!
These are some things to consider when trying natural deodorants:
- Everybody’s different! What works for me might not work for you and vice versa!
- Ideally you should try each product for at least 28-30 days (your whole cycle for women. Not sure what the ‘rules’ for men are)
- You will sweat with natural deodorants! Any deodorant that’s promoted as ‘antiperspirant‘ is VERY bad for you. I’m sorry if you don’t like to hear this and I know it can be uncomfortable, but if your body wants to sweat, you should let it!
- I personally don’t trust brands like Dove, Secret, Degree, etc. with their natural deodorant versions. I think there are a lot of better options out there.
- All the brands I’m talking about in this blog post, regardless if they worked for me or didn’t, are safe to use.
- This is what your deodorant shouldn’t have: Parabens, Aluminum, Triclosan and Phthalates.
Side note: I am not an expert. All this info I’m sharing is based in my own research and after reading a lot of articles online. I recommend you do the same. But hey, thanks for reading my blog post!! 🙂
Brands I like and currently work for me:
Nuud: This is the one I am using right now. Not only because it works but because the actual deodorant is very small and lasts months. All you need to do, is to apply a pea-sized amount. The way they advertise this product really caught my attention. I discovered them through an Instagram Ad because it said you only have to apply it like once a week and I was like… ummm ok I need this! However, most of the time I do have to apply it every day, but there may have been a day or two where I didn’t sweat or shower and I didn’t have to re-apply it! 😉
They are vegan, use a bioplastic sugarcane tube and as a plus, they are a Dutch company and I love the Dutchies 🙂 (my husband is Dutch). I love that even though you sweat, it won’t stain your white clothes like a lot of the natural deodorants do! Definitely give Nuud a try! I have recommended this on Instagram a lot and everyone who has tried it, only had good things to say! Keep in mind that you do after to order online, and it takes like 2-3 weeks for US deliveries.
Side note: Since this product is brand new and it had many ingredients I had never heard about, I asked the real expert about it; My Insta friend Kimia who runs the account Labels Matter. Please go give her a follow because her account is extremely informative about labels and ingredients you should be aware of.
Kimia took the time to analyze each of the ingredients and went above and beyond and contacted Nuud. She had doubts about one of the ingredients (mineral clay) and was worried if the clay was tested for lead. They replied: ‘There is no lead in our bentonite” but they didn’t disclose if it was tested. Which was a little bit shady on their end if you ask me, but at the same time these things are expensive so…. all in all I don’t feel unsafe using this brand, but I do wish they’d confirmed that the clay was actually tested for lead.
Honestly Phresh: I love love love this brand as well! You may have seen them at your local grocery store (I get mine at Meijer!), and next time you do, please give them a try! I have used Honestly Phresh for over a year before I started trying Nuud and I try to have it as a back up because I know I can find it anywhere and it has never failed me! The reason I switched to Nuud is because I was curious about it… that’s all!
By Humankind: Another favorite! I used them for 6 months or so, but towards the end, it kind of stopped working… It was weird, I had to apply it way too often throughout the day to feel protected, but that was after 6 months. I don’t know if something happened with my cycle, hormones or who knows… But I still have it and plan to give it another chance eventually! I love what the brand stands for and it’s a business I love supporting!! Definitely check them out, just keep in mind you have to order online. They also offer a subscription model so you never run out of product (You can also just buy what you need when you need it).
Type A: After publishing this blog post, I tried this new brand I saw on Instagram called Type A. They are sold at Meijer stores, so on my last visit I picked up one of these to give it a try! It’s been almost 3 weeks now and I love it! It’s a cream like Nuud, but feels a little bit lighter and you can apply it directly in your underarm area just like regular deodorant (I’m clearing this up because with Nuud you have to apply it using your finger). The only negative thing about Type A is that when I shave, it kind of burns a little bit (it doesn’t get red though), but I’m not sure if this is happening because I use the citrus scent, but other than that this deodorant stays on my good list and I will probably buy it again. I know they are sold at Meijer stores, but you can also order directly from their website.
Brands I’ve tried and didn’t work:
Tom’s of Maine: It broke my heart because I love their products and the brand in general, but their natural deodorant didn’t work for me! It did work just fine for my husband, so there you have it! I saw they have a new version with pre-biotics which should help with the smell when you sweat that I really want to try, so I’ll keep you guys posted!
Schmitt’s: Worked for a little bit and then all the sudden it stopped working… This one also worked for my husband just fine. Another thing I didn’t like about Schmitt’s, was that it stained my white t-shirts. To be fair, this was one of the first brands of natural deodorant I ever tried and from what I’ve read, right at the beginning when you switch to natural deodorant, it takes a while for your body to adjust. I might give them another chance in the future and see if it works and if it doesn’t stain my white clothes. I’ll keep you guys posted!
Crystal: Did not work since day 1. I had to throw it away… It was a shame, but that’s what happened. It was also right at the beginning and I haven’t given it another chance ever since.
Native: Also didn’t work since day 1. I didn’t like the texture either. I was super disappointed because I had seen so many people recommend it, but it didn’t work AT ALL for me!
I didn’t want to extend too much with these brands because, as I mentioned earlier, this is going to be different for everyone. Some of these worked for a few days and then stopped working, and others like Tom’s and Crystal didn’t work since day 1 (even though Tom’s worked on Gordon just fine!)
So there you have it! Remember that each body and PH is different and the best way to know if something works for you is to give a try and ideally try it for 30 days.
I hope this post was helpful! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out on Instagram or leave a comment here 🙂 I will reply directly to your email if you leave a comment to keep things private, so keep that in mind.
Hope you have a great day ahead and thanks so much for stopping by!
