Packing for a trip to Europe in the spring or summer can feel like a game of “will I need this?” We’ve all been there; shoving items into our suitcase, just in case. But let’s be real, some things are just extra weight we don’t need.
Overpacking not only makes your suitcase heavier, but it also leaves less room for the things that really matter… like souvenirs or a cute new outfit you’ll want to bring back home. Vacation shopping is basically souvenir shopping 😜
In this post, I’m sharing my best Europe packing tips to help you avoid the common mistakes women make when packing for spring travel or summer travel.
I’ll break down the 10 items you really don’t need to bring along, so you can travel light, stress-free, and with a suitcase that only contains what you will actually need to create your stylish European vacation outfits.
Ready to learn my best Europe packing tips? Let’s get started!
🚫 10 Items You Do NOT Need To Pack For Europe! 🚫
1️⃣ Heels or bulky shoes: Stick to comfortable Europe travel outfits!
When it comes to packing, one of the most important Europe packing tips is choosing your footwear wisely. I get it—shoes can make or break your cute European vacation outfits.
But here’s the thing: those trendy stilettos or chunky wedges are not ideal for the cobblestone streets and endless walking you’ll be doing in cities like Rome, Paris or Barcelona. Trust me, you’ll regret it.
Don’t wear shoes like these ⬇️
Instead, pack comfortable, stylish shoes that can complement your vacation looks and provide comfort for all the walking you’ll be doing.
🎯 A pair of versatile sneakers or chic flat leather sandals with a proper sole will do the trick. Not only will your feet thank you, but you’ll also have more space in your luggage for awesome souvenirs.
🙋🏻♀️ I’ve tested a lot of travel shoes across five years of full-time travel — and two Quince pieces keep showing up in my bag every single trip: these white leather sneakers and these leather sandals.
The sneakers have carried me through months of exploring Italy, Portugal, Spain, the US and most recently, 6 weeks in Asia. I’ve worn them to beach towns AND nice restaurants on the same trip. With these 2 pairs of shoes you’re genuinely set for every occasion Europe will throw at you.

2️⃣ Another Item To Leave Behind: Bulky scarves or sweaters
A common mistake I see when people are packing for Europe in the spring is overpacking on layers. While it can get chilly at night in some European cities, you don’t need heavy scarves or thick sweaters clogging up your suitcase.
These items take up way too much space! Leave a bulky scarf like this one at home ⬇️
Instead, follow these Europe packing tips and opt for lighter, more versatile layers like a breathable cardigan, a nice cashmere sweater or a scarf that you can easily roll up.
🙋🏻♀️ My go-to for every single trip is this Mongolian cashmere crewneck from Quince ($50). Yes, $50 for real, high quality cashmere — I was skeptical too.
But I’ve worn mine across 8 countries, washed it in hotel sinks, packed it into a packing cube a hundred times, and it still looks good! It’s warm enough for chilly European evenings but not so bulky it eats up your whole bag. Genuinely one of the best travel investments I’ve made.
And I never — ever — leave without a nice pashmina. It works as a scarf, a wrap on cold flights, a blanket on night trains, and a light layer on breezy terraces. (get a linen one for warm trips or this cashmere blend one for spring/fall trips)
3️⃣ Third Item To Leave Behind: A Long Trench Coat
I know, I know—trench coats are iconic and stylish. And don’t get me wrong, they’re an amazing piece to have in your spring capsule wardrobe.
✈️ But for traveling? The long ones are too bulky, so they stay home. Pack a short version instead.
And I get, there might be trips where they could be a good idea (if it’s always cold and you know for sure you’ll wear it on each and every single one of your travel days), but for most spring trips? I don’t recommend traveling with such a heavy piece.
So what to do? ⬇️
This is one of the top Europe travel hacks I swear by, especially for spring travel. Checking the weather forecast before your trip will help you decide whether or not to bring a heavy jacket, but most of the time, a lightweight option like this one, will be perfect for cooler evenings. (or a short trench)
🎯 If you’re heading to warmer European destinations like Spain, the south of France or Italy, you’ll be better off leaving that long trench at home and opting for a lightweight jacket, a stylish linen blazer or even a denim jacket (it depends on your personal style).
Quince just launched this gorgeous linen jacket that comes in 5 different colors. It can be a great option too!

4️⃣ Beach towels: Don’t waste space on unnecessary items!
If you’re planning on hitting the beach during your European adventures, don’t make the mistake of packing a bulky beach towel.
Most accommodations, whether it’s a hotel or Airbnb, will provide beach towels for you. Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way that packing a towel just eats up precious suitcase space.
Instead, focus on packing the Europe travel essentials you’ll actually use.
Pro tip: do check in advance with your accommodation if they provide these. If you’re heading to a beach destination, they usually do!

5️⃣ Avoid Traveling With Expensive Jewelry: Keep It Simple & Safe!
One of the most important Europe packing tip I can share is to leave your flashy jewelry at home.
Let’s be honest: no one wants to spend their time worrying about a lost necklace or stolen watch when they’re exploring the streets of Paris or London.
Instead, pack a few affordable, versatile pieces that can elevate any Europe travel outfit without the stress. You’ll still look fabulous in your vacation outfits without the risk!
And I get it, some people have messaged me saying that they have insurance on their expensive jewelry, and that’s fine. But I don’t think insurance can save you from the horrible (and potentially dangerous) experience of getting robbed. (2026 update: if heading to London, I would strongly advise you to leave your expensive jewelry behind)
6️⃣ Europe Packing Tips: Leaving Behind Tote Bags Or Bags Without Zippers & Choose Secure Crossbody Bags Instead!
I’ve made the mistake of bringing trendy tote bags when packing for Europe, and let me tell you—pickpockets are real. (I’ve seen them in action!)
If you want to stay safe and keep your valuables secure, opt for a crossbody bag with zippers. This is a must-follow Europe travel hack.
I’ve learned that tote bags are great for back home, but not ideal for crowded tourist attractions or public transportation. Keep your belongings safe, and you won’t have to stress about your wallet or phone being snatched away.
Plus, crossbody bags are far more comfortable for long days of sightseeing and if you bring one like this one, it will look so chic with all your Europe summer outfits.

🎯This is the Quince Italian leather raffia crossbody I’ve been traveling with for almost two years — through airports, markets, museums, and plenty of dinners out. It has a zipper (non-negotiable for Europe!), fits my phone, travel wallet, sunnies, etc and somehow looks chic with literally everything.
I’ve spilled coffee on it. It’s been rained on in Portugal. It still looks great. I just clean it with a sponge and some soap. It’s the last thing I’d ever leave behind. You can also browse all their crossbody bag options here — just make sure whatever you pick has a zipper!
7️⃣ Don’t Pack Too Many Outfit Options: Pack A Smart Travel Capsule Wardrobe!
One of the most common Europe packing mistakes I see women make is overpacking outfits.
I get it—you want to look cute in every single photo. But packing too many clothes is a quick way to weigh yourself down and make your suitcase a nightmare to carry.
⭐️ The solution? A travel capsule wardrobe!
I actually made one for you already! It is designed for Spring in Europe travel, fits in a carry-on and you can copy it right away.
With just 21 pieces, I created 24 cute and comfy travel outfits: 4 for travel days, 14 for everyday explorations and 6 for dressier occasions. I explain exactly how you can do this step by step.
Just trust me on the quantities, I’ve done this many times 😉
8️⃣ Leave Behind Giant Suitcases: Stick To A Carry-on For More Mobility (trust me on this one)
One of my absolute favorite Europe packing tips (and general packing tips) is to stick to a carry-on suitcase. There’s just no need to pack your entire wardrobe, especially when you’ll be moving between cities, hopping on trains, and navigating small hotel rooms. (often times with no elevators)
I’ve made the mistake of packing large suitcases before, and let me tell you, it’s not worth it.
A carry-on suitcase will make traveling a breeze. You’ll feel lighter, more mobile, and free to explore Europe without the stress of lugging around a massive suitcase. Plus, when you’re packing for summer travel or spring travel, a carry-on like this one is more than enough.
🎯 I have lived out of this exact 20″ Level 8 carry-on for over two years. It has been to 10+ countries, I have checked it a few times and it’s been handled by airlines that are not exactly gentle, and it still rolls perfectly!
It fits everything I need for months at a time — clothes, shoes, toiletries — and I never once wished I had a bigger bag. If you’re serious about carry-on travel, this is the one I’d recommend without any hesitation.

9️⃣ Don’t Pack Hair Dryers: Most Hotels Have Them Already
I’ve learned over the years that there’s really no need to bring a hair dryer on your trip to Europe. Most hotels and even Airbnbs will provide hair dryers as part of their standard amenities.
And if you’re staying in a more budget-friendly accommodation, don’t worry! European travel spots are used to hosting visitors, so they’re pretty much guaranteed to have this essential.
Check your accommodation amenities to make sure, but seriously, in my experience this is internationally more essential than toilet paper! 😂
1️⃣0️⃣ Don’t Pack Too Many Toiletries!
Last but not least… don’t pack too many toiletries! Hear me out… Look at how I used to travel ⬇️
Yes, these are mostly toiletries.
And look at my toiletry bag for a recent 6-week trip to Mexico City ⬇️
When it comes to packing toiletries, less is always more. I used to pack so many products, but over time, I’ve learned that those extra bottles just take up precious space and add unnecessary weight to my suitcase.
So, here’s one of my top Europe packing tip: stick to travel-friendly toiletries that do double duty and are carry-on safe.
My skincare routine while traveling looks like this:
- Exfoliant (once a week)
- Hemp Serum (morning OR night) *can be used as eye cream*
- Day Moisturizer
- Face sunscreen (trying to be good at this – this tinted one is great!)
- Antioxidant Balm (every night) *can be used as eye cream*
To remove my make-up I use these washable make-up remover rounds. That’s it!
I only need these 5 items for my entire skincare routine, and I love how simple and effective it is. No bulky bottles, no extra packaging. Just high-quality, compact products that do the job. Plus, they all fit easily into my bag and save me from having to bring a dozen different products with me.
And if you do happen to forget anything, you’re actually in for a treat!! Skincare shopping in most European cities is HEAVEN! So no worries, you will be just fine 😉
