🧳 Carry-On Packing FAQ
How much fits in a carry-on suitcase?
A standard 20 to 22 inch carry-on holds roughly 35 to 40 liters of packing space. For most women, that means about 7 to 9 tops, 3 to 4 bottoms, a dress or two, a light layer, pajamas, underwear, 2-3 pairs of shoes, and a toiletry bag. My carry-on packing calculator above gives you the exact answer for your suitcase and your sizes.
What size carry-on do most airlines allow?
In the US, the standard limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, used by American, Delta, United, Alaska, and JetBlue. Many European airlines allow 55 x 40 x 23 cm, but budget carriers like Ryanair only allow a 20 cm depth. Always confirm with your airline before you fly, because these limits can change anytime.
Does my clothing size change how much fits in my carry-on?
Yes, and most packing lists ignore this completely. The same 10 piece list takes up noticeably more room in a size 2X than in a size small, which is why generic packing advice so often disappoints. That's exactly why this calculator asks for your clothing and shoe sizes before doing the math.
How many outfits can I get out of one carry-on?
More than you'd think. With a mix and match packing list, 10 to 12 well chosen pieces can create 20 or more outfits. I've traveled full time out of a carry-on since 2021, and the secret is picking pieces that all work together, not packing more.
Will my American carry-on fit on European airlines?
Often yes, but sometimes barely. Most US carry-ons run about 9 inches deep, while strict European carriers like Ryanair publish a 20 cm limit, which is just under 8 inches. Use the airline check in the calculator above to see where your bag stands, then confirm with the airline before you fly.
What takes up the most space in a carry-on?
Jeans, sneakers, hair tools, and a full toiletry bag are the biggest space eaters. One pair of sneakers takes about as much room as 4 or 5 rolled tops. The easiest fix is wearing your bulkiest items on the plane, because whatever you wear on travel day rides free 😎
How accurate is this carry-on packing calculator?
It's built on the real published dimensions of 35 popular suitcases and realistic volume estimates for each clothing item by size. Treat the results as smart guidance rather than a guarantee, because every suitcase and every packing style is a little different. When in doubt, do a test pack at home before your trip.
