I’ve been living out of a 20-inch carry-on since 2021. That means I’ve worn, tested, loved, retired, and re-bought pants more times than I can count.
I’ve walked cobblestone streets in Europe in the rain and heat, survived 50-hour travel days to Asia, gone straight from a plane to dinner without changing in Istanbul (I had to), and figured out (mostly the hard way) which pants are actually worth packing and which ones just look good in photos.
So when someone asks me about the best pants for travel, I take that question seriously. Because here’s the thing: your bottoms are the foundation of your entire travel wardrobe.
✅ Get them right and everything else falls into place.
❌ Get them wrong and you’re either uncomfortable for days, leaving your pants behind mid-trip, or frantically trying to find a replacement pair in a foreign country where things sometimes don’t fit right.
That’s exactly why I always tell people: start your packing process by choosing your bottoms first. You’ll see why!

Why You Should Pick Your Bottoms Before Your Tops
Most women start with packing their tops. They grab a few cute shirts, a blouse they love, maybe a lightweight sweater, and then scramble to find bottoms that go with everything. This is backwards, and it’s one of the main reasons women overpack.
Tops are easy. A T-shirt, simple tank top, a flowy blouse — they work with almost anything. But pants set the tone. The style of your pants determines what shoes work, what tops pair well, and whether your overall look reads as casual, put-together, or somewhere in between.
When you choose your bottoms first, you’re building your travel capsule from the ground up.
After choosing your final bottom pieces, every top you pick needs to work with those 2-3 pairs of pants. And so do your shoes. Make this small change, and packing will become more intentional, faster, and honestly? Way more fun!
Think of it this way: your pants are the main character, your tops and shoes are the “supporting cast”. When the anchor is solid, everything else floats effortlessly around it.
And here’s the other thing nobody talks about: It’s so hard to find pants that fit you just right.
You can grab a cute top almost anywhere. But finding pants that actually fit right, flatter you, and are stylish? That’s a whole mission!
⭐️ Get your bottoms sorted before you start packing everything else. Trust me on this one.
What Makes a Pair of Pants Actually Good for Travel?
Before we get into my picks, here’s what I actually look for in the best pants for travel. Not all comfortable pants are created equal:
- Wrinkle resistant — You pull them out of your suitcase and they’re ready to wear. No ironing in a hotel room, no sad creases ruining your photos. (I make an exception with linen pants, you’ll see why 😅)
- Packable and lightweight — They shouldn’t eat up half your carry-on. Fabric matters a lot here.
- Versatile enough to dress up OR down — If a pair of pants can only do one thing, they’re not earning their spot in your suitcase. They have to work with sneakers and with your going out sandals.
- Comfortable for long stretches — Travel days can be long and exhausting. You don’t want pants that feel great for two hours and then torture you for the next twelve.
- They actually look cute — This matters! Especially in Europe. You want to look like a stylish traveler, not like you rolled off a plane (even if you totally did).
With that in mind, here are my 5 best pants for travel — tested by yours truly 🙋🏻♀️.
It was genuinely hard to narrow it down to five. These are the ones that show up in my suitcase trip after trip, no questions asked.
The 5 Best Pants for Travel (That I Actually Wear)
1️⃣ Ultra-Stretch Ponte Cropped Wide Leg Pants (Quince)
I own these in every color. Literally, every color. Black, navy, brown, green — they all live in my travel wardrobe rotation.
These are my “going out” pants: the ones I reach for when I want to look polished and put-together without actually suffering for it. They’re made from a stretch Ponte fabric that holds its shape all day, doesn’t wrinkle, and honestly looks like proper tailored trousers — even though they feel like nothing.
I wear a size 2 and size 4 depending on the color, and my best fit is size 2, length 26″. They also come in a 24″ inseam if you’re on the petite side.
These are hands-down some of the best pants for travel I’ve ever found — especially for dinners out, day trips to a nice town, or any occasion where you want to look like you tried without actually trying that hard.
Pair them with a tucked-in basic tee for daytime or swap in a silk blouse for dinner and you’re done.

Here are some ways I’ve styled them while on the road ⬇️ (for reference I’m 5’4″ and 125 lbs)
2️⃣ Tapered Linen Pants (Quince)
I have these pants in almost every color too — the green, navy, brown, beige, and black ones all live in my rotation.
Linen pants are one of the most essential travel pants for women, especially for warm-weather destinations or Europe in the spring and summer.
Linen breathes like nothing else, and the tapered cut on these is what makes them my top pick in this style. The tapered leg gives a cleaner, more intentional silhouette — more flattering than a straight leg, and a little more polished than a wide leg for most body types.
That said, these also come in wide leg and straight leg if that suits your style better — I just find the tapered version to be the most universally flattering, especially when your legs might be a little puffy from a long travel day.
⚠️ One honest note: linen wrinkles. That’s just the nature of the fabric. But here’s the thing — linen wrinkles gracefully. It looks relaxed and intentional rather than sloppy. Total vacation vibes for a slow morning in Santorini or a market day in the South of France.

3️⃣ Albion Fit Wide Leg Joggers
Okay, hear me out before you scroll past. I know “joggers” might not scream “stylish travel look,” but these are not your average joggers.
The Albion Fit Wide Leg Joggers look like elevated casual pants. They’re wrinkle-free, lightweight, and have a wide leg silhouette that looks intentional and put-together — nothing frumpy about them.
These are the best travel pants for days when comfort is genuinely non-negotiable — long flights, full sightseeing days, slow mornings at a café, towns where the vibe is relaxed. You look like yourself, just the comfortable version.

4️⃣ Albion Fit Destination Joggers
Yes, Albion Fit makes it onto this list twice — because when a brand gets travel pants right, they really get it right. The Destination Joggers are a slightly different silhouette from the wide leg version: more casual and fitted, but with the same flattering thick waistband and that same “I didn’t try too hard but I clearly put myself together” energy.
The name really does say it all. These were made with a destination in mind — whether that’s a long-haul flight, a full city day, or an evening where you don’t feel like changing but still want to look like you did.
They’re one of my go-to comfortable travel pants for trips where I know I’ll be on my feet a lot but also want to be able to sit down at a nice restaurant without thinking twice about it.
🏆 And my favorite part? The waistband.
It’s thick, structured, and incredibly flattering — the kind that holds everything in without cutting into you or rolling down after two hours of walking. I ate my way through Italy for three months straight in these pants and they kept showing up for me. Every. Single. Day. That’s the kind of endorsement that actually counts.

5️⃣ Spanx Pants
If you’ve never tried Spanx pants for travel, you’re missing out. And I don’t mean their shapewear, I mean their actual pants. They’re incredibly flattering, hold their shape all day, and have that sleek finish that makes everything look more put-together with zero effort. That’s the Spanx magic.
They make several styles worth knowing about:
🏆 The Perfect Pant — the MVP of the lineup. Classic, tailored trouser silhouette that looks polished enough for dinners and nice enough for exploring. This is the one I’d start with if you’re new to Spanx pants.
🏆 Wide Leg Pants — flowy, comfortable, and effortlessly stylish. The kind of pants that look like you tried without actually trying.
🏆 Slim-fit and Straight Leg options — slightly more casual, but still with that Spanx finish that makes everything look intentional.
One thing to keep in mind: Spanx pants can be a bit bulkier in your suitcase compared to the other picks on this list. So if carry-on space is tight, wear them on your travel day and save the room for lighter pairs inside your bag.
They also have the Air Essentials collection which is super soft, wrinkle-free and comfortable. Great for travel days specifically, but more on the casual side so harder to dress up for dinners or a nicer evening out.
Which of These Best Travel Pants Is Right for You?
Not sure which pair to start with? Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
- Going somewhere where you need to look polished? → Ponte Wide Leg Pants
- Warm weather destination or beach town? → Tapered Linen Pants
- Long travel day or heavy sightseeing? → Albion Fit Wide Leg Joggers
- Want something sleek and comfy? → Albion Fit Destination Joggers
- Love premium comfort and quality? → Spanx Air Essentials
A Few Extra Things I’ve Learned About Traveling with Pants
Now that you’ve got your shortlist of the 5 best pants for travel, here are a few things I wish someone had told me when I first started packing carry-on only:
✅ You can rewear pants — and you should. This is genuinely one of the biggest mindset shifts for new carry-on travelers. A good pair of travel pants can easily be worn 2 to 3 times before washing, sometimes more depending on the weather and what you were doing.
Cooler climates, mostly city days, not breaking a sweat? You’re getting at least 3 wears easily. Hot and humid with lots of walking? Maybe 2. Either way, stop thinking you need a fresh pair every single day. You really don’t.
✅ Stick to neutrals. All five pairs I recommended come in neutrals — black, brown, navy, beige, green. That’s very intentional. When your pants are neutral, every top you pack works with them automatically. You double your outfit combinations without adding a single extra item to your bag.
✅ 2-3 pairs is enough, even for 2 weeks. When your travel pants for women are versatile, wrinkle-free, and rewearable, you simply don’t need more. A quick spot clean or hang-dry in the hotel bathroom and they’re good to go again. (remember you’ll also have a dress or jumpsuit and other bottom pieces like shorts and skirts)
✅ Wear your bulkiest pair on travel days. If Spanx or anything slightly thicker is on your list, wear it on the plane. Save the lighter, more packable pairs for inside your carry-on.
✅ Think about length. Cropped pants are generally more versatile for travel because they work equally well with sandals, sneakers, and flats. If you go with a full-length pant, just make sure it works with the shoes you’re bringing. This means, try everything on before your trip!
Okay, so here’s the bottom line (pun very much intended 😅 – let me have it ok?)
Finding your perfect travel pants is genuinely one of the most impactful things you can do for your travel wardrobe. The right pair makes you comfortable on the plane, cute at dinner, and confident walking around a new city — all without taking up half your suitcase.
⭐️ And once you find yours? You’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
I’ve been at this for a long time now and I still get excited every time I pack these into my carry-on. That’s the kind of loyalty that only comes from pants that have actually been tested — in the rain, on the cobblestones, on the late flights, and yes, through many, many plates of pasta 🍝
Happy travels, and even happier packing!

Aimara
