Anyone else a fan of monochromatic outfits?
I have to admit that this is a new trend for me to try. I’ve never been a fan of dressing head to toe in the same color honestly, but lately I’ve been finding myself giving it a try and I have to say, I’m all here for it! I think the monochromatic outfit trend is here to stay and even though I’m not a huge fan of trends in general, I believe it’s important to have a good eye and kind of learn how to figure out when trends are classic and timeless enough for you to incorporate them in your closet and day-to-day style.
I personally believe that the way you dress has an impact on the way you feel, but I also don’t believe in shopping like a maniac every month because A.) It’s not good for the planet and B.) I want to learn how to live with less. That being said, it’s important to always find creative ways to look modern and stylish without breaking the bank. This is a great way to keep your wardrobe updated, build a capsule wardrobe and always look good with less. (To learn how to start a capsule wardrobe with 15 basic pieces, check this post!)
Today I felt like dressing up a little bit. Snowy days can be hard and they kind of make me sad after a while (I’m from Venezuela so I’m not used to the snow or cold weather!), so I try to dress up as much as possible and it really boosts my mood. Today, to my surprise, after I got dressed I looked very…. BLUE! As you will realize over time, I’m obsessed with blue in all its shades, types, forms and prints. I constantly find myself incorporating more and more blue clothes into my wardrobe and whenever I have other color options I always go back to… guess what… BLUE! But currently I’m trying to make an effort to add more colors to my wardrobe (that’s a post for another day!).

My take on monochromatic outfits
*Please note that I’m giving you different options when it comes to outfit links. I usually include a budget, mid range and premium options and you can choose based on your wants/needs.
I definitely did not incorporate any other colors besides blue today though, BUT I did found my own take on monochromatic outfits and I want to share what I did to inspire you to try the same!
I paired this printed butterfly wrap dress that I’ve had for quite a while now, with royal blue tights and navy military coat, plus a cute ponytail and black pumps because blue shoes would have been too much. LOL. (By the way, heels and snow is not a good idea).
I followed three rules to create my own version of a monochromatic look:
- I tried to break the pattern with another color for my accessories (It contradicts itself I know, but it makes perfect sense at the same time LOL) like I did here with my shoes. I intentionally chose black instead of blue.
- I added a print of the same color (In this case, the dress). You can also dress in the same color and break the pattern with your tights or shoes by wearing something printed and fun!
- I used different shades of the same color. Remember this and you’ll be just fine when you try something similar.
Even though it’s totally ok and -super cute- to dress head to toe in the same color, it’s also good to try to create your own version of a monochromatic look, trust me, this will make you stand out and will also open up how many options and looks you can create with things you already have in your closet.
Other times I’ve dressed head-to-toe with the same color (or shades of the same color):
Here you have 15 different outfit options to inspire you to create your own monochromatic looks with things you already have in your closet! Sorry in advance for the quality in some of the photos LOL. They are very old! (I updated this post in 2021). It’s kind of fun to see all my different hairstyles and this also proves how timeless my style is. Some of these photos are over 5 years old!

A lot of these looks are all black and in other ones I do a lot of print mixing. I also repeat a lot of the pieces which is good too. I always try to maximize everything I have in my closet and wear every piece in many different ways.

I posted a YouTube video where I talk about 5 winter coats you will need every year. If you are interested, it’s worth checking out. What does this video have to do with monochromatic looks you may be wondering? Well adding a coat will get you half way there and a good coat will instantly upgrade any monochromatic look believe it or not! Here’s the video:
